mohamedmansour··on Show HN: I build browser extension that skips any type of ad(Not an ad blocker)
Pretty lean extension, you basically set the playback rate of an Ad to 16 and automatically click on skip ad when it appears.

If this becomes popular, Google can copy Facebook anti blocker methods and just randomize the classnames and Dom depth of nodes for the button. And they could honey pot it with hidden elements or image buttons.

mohamedmansour··on Fastly CDN is down (affecting Reddit, GitHub, SO, ...)
This is exactly why IPFS is needed! Decentralized CDN.
mohamedmansour··on New Grad vs. Senior Dev
No excuse converting python 2 to python 3 slowly. One commit at a time. We did that in Chromium. Using newer Jon deprecated, unsupported libraries brings a bit better team Morale and enjoyment in what you do. Imagine intern coming in, and using Fortran.

mohamedmansour··on Kubernetes Is a Surprisingly Affordable Platform for Personal Projects
You don’t, behind the scenes they use orchestrations like kubernetes or service fabric. So much easier deploying a docker container as a Azure Web App, so easy to auto scale based on thresholds of certain resources, so easy to debug what’s wrong since they give you all the tools. I use that in my current projects today.

But Azure Kubernetes in my last project was easy too, it comes with a sophisticated monitoring solution, it integrates nicely with cheap Azure Load Balancer, but still too much overhead than Azure Web App.

mohamedmansour··on Horrors of Using Azure Kubernetes Service in Production
Brendan Burns was the Lead Engineer on Kubernetes at Google around 3 years ago, then went to Microsoft to lead this entire AKS/ACS/Container effort.

mohamedmansour··on Launch HN: Pagedraw (YC W18) – Compile UI Mockups to React Code
Doesn't work on Edge, Firefox, or even Safari. I am sorry, your first sentence "big believers in standards" is just a lie. It is just developer laziness for supporting non standard stuff and doing User Agent sniffing.

Rule #1 is do feature detection not user agent detection. What are you doing that is "pretty deep in the browser"? NaCL? Experimental Chrome features?

mohamedmansour··on Steam is no longer supporting Bitcoin
Finally! This was caused by my complains, I paid $32 for a $25 dollar game, and I it didn't go through since txn fees were not right 4 cents less. And BitPay refunded me just $17.

I am so thankful Steam did it right, meanwhile BitPay still blames the customer!

Here are the different threads of where the complain went viral. The internet wins at the end, removing the shady business of BitPay.

mohamedmansour··on Due to Bitcoin network fees, customer loses $10 trying to buy $25 game on Steam
BitPay loves BCH, maybe they are doing this just to screw with peoples mind?
mohamedmansour··on Due to Bitcoin network fees, customer loses $10 trying to buy $25 game on Steam
Naw, BitPay tells you the exact amount to pay in BTC for a 15 minute window. Around 10 of my friends verified I paid the right price, I was projecting to the big screen to show how it works. For some reason the network fee to pay the miners screwed up in BitPay or the price they received wasn't the right price since bitcoin went down slightly within 2.5 hours. So at the end of the day, the consumer is to blame.
mohamedmansour··on Due to Bitcoin network fees, customer loses $10 trying to buy $25 game on Steam
Hi @Lazare, I am the dude who posted that reddit post.

The $25 game cost me 0.00424232 BTC (around $32.96 USD at that time). I transferred that much to them, but the network fees for some reason raised within that 2.5 hours. 3 cents. And they cancelled it. The fees were 0.00038932 BTC

It is messed up. Sending money from Coinbase to BitPay, for $29 resulted in $32 dollar in fees.

Nevertheless, this experiment showing a bunch of friends (~10) why Bitcoin is the worst payment provider. Network fees are not calculated correctly, transaction fees too. And at the end, this 3 cents difference from the transaction fees made a big deal.

And worse of all, customer support doesn't exist for the consumer at all when they pay for Bitcoin.

mohamedmansour··on Babylon.js 3.0
The impressive thing about Babylon.js is Spector http://spector.babylonjs.com/

Babylon Spector is a fully functional WebGL debugger, it is an extension in Chrome which makes 3D development on the web so much easier, works with Three.js too!

mohamedmansour··on Ask HN: Google employees, why is G+ more important than your users?
Ever since Google has been integrating all their services to Google+, I have been using Google differently now:

1) Anonymous or no commenting on YouTube 2) Using Windows 8.1 Mail app to access Gmail. Because seeing that Google+ notification icon is distracting and annoying me 3) Stopped rating apps on Google Play store 4) Stopped contributing reviews to Local 5) Trying to stop using Google's Web products in favor of apps instead because of that damn Notifications bar.

I understand using a single Google Account for all services, but linking them all to one service where that service acts as a Social Network is not a service I would want to use anymore. They acquired Meeboo bar, and it seems they want every service they own have that bar and I despised that bar. Totally the wrong direction to take.

Treating each service separately would have been better and giving the option to the user to show that bar would have been great.

mohamedmansour··on Facebook vulnerability 2013
Agreed, Facebook will not be safe anymore. All these white hackers will sell their exploit to black hackers.
mohamedmansour··on Facebook vulnerability 2013
Why didn't your coworkers reply back asking for more info? This is like the first thing security engineers should do. Look how serious Security Engineers at Microsoft reply back, http://blogs.msdn.com/b/oldnewthing/archive/2011/12/15/10247...

The right thing to do is add Khalil to the white hat list, and pay him what he deserves. He doesn't speak or read English as you have noticed. Your TOS for white hat page is NOT even translatable.

He used real accounts because your team did not care what he had to say. What do you think he should have done? Sell it to the black market?

mohamedmansour··on Why JavaScript Still Sucks
He explains his options at the end, so I don't know why he is saying it sucks :) JavaScript is improving but is the bloody vendors that keep lacking it behind. That is why TypeScript is awesome, they are bringing ECMAScript 6 to all browsers in native JavaScript form.
mohamedmansour··on Online collaborative LaTeX editor
Would be really nice if there was intellisense! Great project though!
mohamedmansour··on Why a Computer Science Degree Matters
It depends on the University. I am from University of Ottawa, and I wish I took Computer Science instead of Software Engineering. They made me take Geology/Evolution/Italian Cinema while I begged the dean I would like to take Computer Graphics/Artificial Intelligence/Cryptography etc. Software Engineers in my University let the student focus on the higher level vision to know everything, but I kid you not, I totally forgot everything I learned in Geology/Evolution/Italian Cinema/etc. So if I took Computer Science, then I would have done the fun stuff, the important stuff that would help me prepare for job hunting. Instead, I just focused on Open Source, and personal projects to prepare, and that worked.
mohamedmansour··on The Nexus 4 is a dud
I agree about his point that one year Nexus is Samsung, another is HTC, and another is LG. Every experience is different, you are not guaranteed that the experiences will improve from one manufacturer to another. In my opinion the Samsung S3 looks better than the Nexus 4.

Anyways, I was a 4 year old Android user, but this year I bought a Nokia Lumia 920, and I absolutely love it. I even got reception for the very first time in the elevator! And the user experience blown me away. Some apps needs improvement, but the core apps keep me addicted.
