I want permanent standard time
mohamedkoubaa··on Best-selling Zigbee temperature sensors tested and compared
People who read ingredients lists of food are a tiny, parochial subset of consumers and yet they strongly influence what is on shelves.
mohamedkoubaa··on Nature's capacity to 'bounce back' when species are lost is overestimated: study
The political will to save a species only spikes after or during its extinction. If you could keep a small population alive in a greenhouse it could be used to revive them when they suffer an event and people start to care.
mohamedkoubaa··on Plain text is still one of the best technologies we have
Sometimes I'd rather have ten unambiguous words.
mohamedkoubaa··on Mold Linker Version 3.0.0 Release – Rewritten in Rust
It's a rust to C transpiler, I was thinking it could let you use a C version of the mold linker without maintaining one yourself.

Have you considered using Eurydice?
mohamedkoubaa··on Europe's new robotics unicorn: Germany's RobCo hits $1B valuation
They make less money as salary but aren't cheaper overall when you take into account all the other expenses and regulations.
mohamedkoubaa··on Germany’s RobCo hits $1B valuation
It is about as useful as robot that chews your food for you
mohamedkoubaa··on Germany’s RobCo hits $1B valuation
Even if VLA reaches 100% success rate it still isn't viable. No factory operator wants a cloud hosted model in the critical path. And nobody is (yet) building a server rack that can be air gapped in the factory to run VLA, and these models don't run on a Mac Mini. Probably an opportunity for something like Oxide to pick up, but they have more profitable segments to go after.
mohamedkoubaa··on Europe's new robotics unicorn: Germany's RobCo hits $1B valuation
Why exactly is a >1B valuation necessary to expand worldwide?
mohamedkoubaa··on The evolution of effective altruism
So.. government?
mohamedkoubaa··on The evolution of effective altruism
When effective altruists talk about ineffective altruism, they talk about AHA. When I talk about ineffective altruism, I talk about things like a targeted trust.

It's the EA people who generalize from AHA to make grand ethical claims that lead to absurdity.

mohamedkoubaa··on The evolution of effective altruism
A better term would be an 'order'
mohamedkoubaa··on The evolution of effective altruism
There was modest farmland in Iraq managed by a trust for about 400 years that paid for the wedding dresses for all women in the nearby town. The colonial administrators found this ineffective and dismantled the trust fund and privatized the land.

There is something to be said about how we sometimes fail to account for the effectiveness of ineffective altruism.

mohamedkoubaa··on LeCun has "zero concerns" about AI wiping out humanity, recent "rogue" incidents
But oddly not weird compared to other classic ideas of entities like genies and monkey paws
mohamedkoubaa··on What's the future for pure math research in the age of AI?
What does it mean for a mathematics to be "provisioned"? A well-funded math foundation run like the Linux Foundation could cover the lifestyles of many elite mathematicians. I don't understand why you imagine it would be centralized behind one "large entity" or that this large entity, so long as it is not a government, can't be trusted to fund good things.

People unaffiliated with the Linux foundation contribute to Linux. Regularly.

mohamedkoubaa··on What's the future for pure math research in the age of AI?
The idea that the rest of humanity needs to support them is absurd. A couple billion in private trust funds could fund mathematics researchers in perpetuity.
mohamedkoubaa··on LeCun has "zero concerns" about AI wiping out humanity, recent "rogue" incidents
Almost everyone who knows what they are talking about is saying that LLMs are a dead end.
mohamedkoubaa··on Why don't more developers “use the platform”?
I always wonder if there could ever be a new css variant with less features that nevertheless can do everything that can be done today. Then you could imagine a migration where unnecessary CSS has to be implemented by poly fills and frameworks will be shamed into using the stricter subset
mohamedkoubaa··on Mike Tomlin spent 12 years building a Minecraft city
Agreed. It seems to have grown organically from a seed, which is the case for the most beautiful cities IRL. Usually planned developments are ugly. I don't think I've ever seen something like this, planned yet organic.
mohamedkoubaa··on Mike Tomlin spent 12 years building a Minecraft city
I think both perspectives are right. Successful people tend to have a range of pastimes but there are episodes in their career lasting 1-2 years where they are maniacally focused on one thing.

This is changing, it's hard to find someone these days who thinks sports are just for brutish jocks.
mohamedkoubaa··on The Escalation of War in Ethiopia
OP edited their comment. I think the original said something to the effect of "I didn't read it but I bet it says..."

At least, that was my understanding of the comment that I replied to. Normally I wouldn't say "Did you even read the article" when responding to a thought or opinion

Maybe you should read the article before posting something like this
mohamedkoubaa··on GPT-Synopsys: Frontier Intelligence to Revolutionize Chip Design
I don't know how many users of LLMs fall into each of these buckets but I have the sense that there these distinct buckets. I don't think it's necessarily a global thing. A single user could fall into all three buckets depending on the domain they are working in. For instance for CI/CD I tend to ship clanker, for tests I interrogate LLM about output, but for code algorithms I am more likely to interrogate to learn.
mohamedkoubaa··on GPT-Synopsys: Frontier Intelligence to Revolutionize Chip Design
A junior engineer can interrogate the heck out of the clanker and learn faster than they would otherwise.

mohamedkoubaa··on Nicholas Polson has authored 258 academic papers in 2026 (so far)
Squatting seems like the most plausible explanation. Explaining an idea to your friend at a bar doesn't make it "yours", but publishing a manuscript does.
mohamedkoubaa··on 12,000-year-old Göbeklitepe burials explain scattered bones
I think it's likely associated with desert cultures since vegetation nucleates around burial sites due to access to organic material.
