moffkalast··on The Mathocalypse
It's never a wrong moment to mock quantum computing. Like neuromorphic computing, some fields just make it way too easy.

We can stop once they find a single productive use case for their billion dollar machines.

moffkalast··on The Mathocalypse
Trust me bro, just 100 more cubits, I swear we'll break everyone's encryption and cause the downfall of society, please bro just one more grant, It'll be stable this time :'(
moffkalast··on Mistral Large 4
Le Chaton Fat is still too dangerous to release.
moffkalast··on Mistral Large 4
And it's alright, we make plenty of fun of Americans in return :)
moffkalast··on Meta’s Muse is an adorable privacy and security dumpster fire
I have a feeling LLM security breaches are slowly transitioning from exploiting obscure zero days to simply walking through the front door with the still live access token they've been pretrained on, lmao.
moffkalast··on Meta’s Muse is an adorable privacy and security dumpster fire
Ah yes, Meta and privacy. Two things that go together like a jet engine and a library.
moffkalast··on Anthropic reported diary entry to police, woman faces felony charge
It still shocks me the number of people I know who freely let agents on devices that contain unencrypted private keys, freely dump internal data into cloud models and generally don't give a second thought about any of it being trained on, inevitably leaked one day in a db breach or read by providers. I find it's best to consider any data put into a cloud model the same as if it were posted publicly online, since that is the very possible eventual end result.

Hopefully more of these stories push people towards local models :)

moffkalast··on Sales of sub-€25,000 electric car models set to rise sevenfold
> Renault Twizy

Ah so that's where the Fiat Multipla designers went after getting fired.

moffkalast··on Beating the compiler (2024)
Now I'm wondering if Claude can beat the compiler if I ever need to optimize something a bit more.
moffkalast··on Sales of sub-€25,000 electric car models set to rise sevenfold
I get that it's supposed to be a low speed city car where parking ease maybe matters more, but it's hilarious to see an EV where every newton of drag matters designed like a rounded brick on wheels. In fact most modern cars except for sedans seem to not give two shits about aero anymore which is leaving so much range on the table.
moffkalast··on Car is a smartphone on wheels. Here's who's listening
Ergo, you don't pay for the celular link.
moffkalast··on Car is a smartphone on wheels. Here's who's listening
If you do have control over paying for it then you could conceivably stop and cancel it. I don't think they want to take that chance.
moffkalast··on Car is a smartphone on wheels. Here's who's listening
Well, just the fact that you don't pay for the monthly cellular subscription these cars use should tell you all you need to know about who's the product in this situation.
moffkalast··on Tell HN: Bob Cringely has died
> I love how after the debacle of Bob trying to make his own plane, the producers had to salvage the entire production by buying him a kit plane and filming him hang out a few hours at the factory acting like he was actually building the thing when really he was just getting in the way of the workers while grandstanding

The top comment lays it out as it is, lmao. And it was far more than 30 days as well.

moffkalast··on Celebrating the 100th birthday of the kidney donated to him as a teenager
So in theory you could keep an organ alive perpetually if you kept transplanting it every fifty or so years?
moffkalast··on Gemini 4 Argon

Is that a reference to https://xkcd.com/353/

moffkalast··on Why the Bronze Age Collapsed
Haha yeah it's always fun to see how absolutely nothing has changed in the past few thousand years when it comes to politics.

I think my favorite part is how Caesar got obsessed with making a new calendar as a secret pet project and we're still using that exact setup today with only two or three minor patches. I kinda would've preferred the Egyptian 10 month 30 day setup with an extra week of vacation though ngl.

moffkalast··on Why the Bronze Age Collapsed
Reminds me of this classic from Historia Civilis: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aq4G-7v-_xI
moffkalast··on Using any C++ library in Godot
At which point do you just switch to a cpp UI library and forget about the engine?
moffkalast··on Tank Body Problem
Yeah P1 wins every time, movement should be limited to like one tank length per round or something.
moffkalast··on Unsealed Briefs in Authors’ Case v. Microsoft/OpenAI
At this point I think we're less concerned about the piracy and more about how they've been acting as cybercriminals, staging a major attack every few days. Other countries might have to start considering it state sponsored cyberterrorism if they continue to operate with complete impunity.

"Our model did an oopsy woopsie for the 35th time" does not seem like a valid legal defense.

moffkalast··on Jev Based Code Review
> human developers who come later

Tbf, once the codebase is slopped enough that becomes impossible and only LLM can come later.

moffkalast··on GPT-6 Astra has gained the ability to drive a car
> When the models stop improving

Soo, never? Granted Cerebras is a thing, if the process can be commoditized.

At the moment the area of edge inference at speed seems pretty bleak though.

moffkalast··on GPT-6 Astra has gained the ability to drive a car
Yeah cause every car needs 8xH200 pulling 10kW to run a VLM at realtime speeds. Would be unfortunate if 4G dropped out under some trees while using the API after all.
moffkalast··on Moving from cash to credit cards, PayPal, etc. is an ongoing privacy disaster
Calling a bunch of elitist pricks who happily shit on everything except their dearest Pixel, who stand in line for Google's Android patches like some kind of modern age Oliver Twist, a 'bastion of hacker culture' is a bit of a stretch to be fair.
moffkalast··on Moving from cash to credit cards, PayPal, etc. is an ongoing privacy disaster
Graphene's latest cope from common banking apps not working on their OS anymore? I suppose that's one way to get ahead of the problem, pronounce them all to be a disaster and not worth using :)
moffkalast··on Aging may be a program, not a breakdown
The lobster, though they die from being too large to molt.
moffkalast··on Aging may be a program, not a breakdown
OTOH same is true for wiping clean habits, prejudices and deeply held wrong beliefs. It's said that science advances one funeral at a time.

If we were managed by the colonial generation, slavery and segregation would still be the norm, only rich white men would be able to vote and a king would still have the final say.

moffkalast··on OpenAI GPT–6 Astra breaks Enigma message that has resisted solution since 2005
If generating an image doesn't make you an artist, generating a solution doesn't make you a researcher.
moffkalast··on Fable 5 – Median thinking declined in August
Petition to rename them to the Office of Weights and Biases, haha.
