modo_··on SSH hacks – a little sanity for remote workers
Is there much of an upside to doing the multiplexing on the client side instead of on the server (with something like tmux)?

It seems to me like the session persistence tmux gives would be worthwhile if you have a lot of simultaneous sessions going.

modo_··on Aerodynamically equivalent Covid-19 1.5m social distancing for walking&running [pdf]
In the limitations section, the authors mention that they didn't consider the effect of head wind, tail wind, and cross-wind.

Can anyone comment on the extent of this limitation in applying their findings to a real world environment? I have to imagine that on even a mildly windy day the slipstream of a runner would look significantly different.

modo_··on A non-Euclidean story or: how to persist when your geometry doesn’t
In the acknowledgements the author explains: "The main impetus behind this text lies both in my advisor’s comments on me 'writing too much prose' when I was being overly verbose in my research articles".

Dwarf Fortress also gets a shoutout, as you might have guessed!

modo_··on Where is everyone getting all of this sourdough starter?
I read the book Sourdough by Robin Sloan a few months back. Your anecdote reminds me of it! You might enjoy reading it -- it's a fun/quirky mix of technology and bread, set in SF.

modo_··on Implementing Function Overloading in Python
Charitably interpreted: A better programmer knows using a fancy feature _can_ result in better code, but, also knows that fancy features usually aren't required to write good code (and that fancy features can turn good code into bad code when reached for too quickly)
modo_··on Kodak Alaris warns the TSA's new airport CT scanners can damage undeveloped film
I've never run into any trouble getting film hand checked while traveling within the US.

Sadly it's a completely different story internationally. Indian security has been the strictest in my experience -- flat out refusal to do anything other than run the film through the X-Ray machine. I don't travel with fast film (800+ ISO) anymore. It's just not worth the stress.

modo_··on The Rise of the Electric Scooter
I use a bike to get around SF the majority of the time as well. But lately I've been switching it up and using a skateboard for short trips. Riding the bike definitely isn't 'impractical', but the skateboard is so much less of a hassle.

You don't have to bother carrying a lock (or walk to the corner to find the nearest pole to lock it to for that matter). And, don't tell my Mom, but not fiddling with a helmet and lights is huge too.

modo_··on Browser Fingerprinting: An Introduction and the Challenges Ahead
Tor's anti-fingerprinting measures are available in Firefox. They're off by default, but you can enable them by going to the about:config page, searching "privacy.resistFingerprinting" and setting to "true"

modo_··on Ask HN: How to be less argumentative online?
Completely agree with all the points here.

To expand on the first, I recently came across a tweet that provides examples of ways to rephrase something to achieve a more neutral tone: https://twitter.com/shl/status/1164924044061237254

modo_··on More Fires Now Burning in Angola, Congo Than Amazon
I don't think that necessarily -- I am curious whether it's a possibility, though.

Wildfires are a rapidly growing source of air pollution. The black + brown carbon aerosols from forest fires can heat the atmosphere significantly [1]. We've seen that emissions from forest fires can effect climate on a global scale.

Climate models attempt to account for heating due to forest fires. But, I'm curious if it's possible that we've underestimated the severity of forest fires in those models.

modo_··on More Fires Now Burning in Angola, Congo Than Amazon
Is there any discussion around the extent of the macro climactic effect of many wildfires burning simultaneously around the globe? How much will these events contribute to warming?
modo_··on Consume less, create more
All fair points. I've found that radically limiting the people I follow has had a huge impact on the quality of my feed (and it's still not great).

More often than not a tweet provides me with an introduction to a new topic / idea that I can then further explore off the site.

I struggled to come up with good tweets on the spot -- here's my best shot:

https://twitter.com/steveschoger/status/997125312411570176

https://twitter.com/tobyshorin/status/1155965565963399173

https://twitter.com/naval/status/1002103360646823936

https://twitter.com/jmj/status/1114598412375035905

Naval's does feel particularly like an elevator pitch though

modo_··on Consume less, create more
It's hard for me to quit twitter because no matter how low quality the average tweet is, there are always diamonds in the rough -- perfectly composed little knowledge bombs.

If you happen to open the app at the right time Twitter can be very high signal/noise.

I keep coming back because of the thought that maybe I'll open it and be introduced to a compelling thought that would have otherwise been buried in 20 pages of cruft

modo_··on Starbucks, monetary superpower
I'm curious if a rules engine [1] could be used instead of implementing the logic in code for something this complicated?

Could fuzzy logic be used to build a case when the laws become contradictory? Maybe after the case is built it could be passed on to legal counsel for approval.

modo_··on Show HN: IOU – Split shared expenses
I've used splitwise a few times for large group activities and really struggled with the UX every time.

The most frequent problem happens when people are slow to add their expenses. It's too easy to pay up before everything has been added, which means having to remember to log back in when that last straggler finally adds their items

The UI and integration with Venmo feel pretty clunky too

modo_··on Plastics: What's Recyclable, What Becomes Trash and Why
I toured the Recology recycling facility a few months ago. The sorting technology is impressive, but the amount of material that they remove and send to the landfill had me questioning the efficacy of the program.

It sucks to push the packaging crimes of businesses onto consumers, but I think improving the public's understanding of what can and cannot be recycled can still have a massive impact on the effectiveness of recycling programs.

San Francisco has a great website to help you figure out what goes in which bin: https://sfrecycles.org/

(Note that you can recycle fabrics -- this isn't possible through most recycling programs!)

modo_··on Show HN: We built a thing in Google Scripts that audits your calendar every week
Really like the premise of this! But, as an individual contributor with hiring / leadership / planning responsibilities, I found that a lot of my highest priority work actually happens in the time between my calendar events.

The structure of this tool makes me think there should be a 1:1 mapping of hours worked to calendar events. Maybe it's a better fit for someone with the "manager's schedule" [1], or maybe you all do a better job of blocking out time for individual work on your calendars?

I see a lot of value in a tool like this though! The calendar rebalancing I frequently find myself doing is grouping like meetings (stacking interviews back to back) and maximizing the duration of meeting-free blocks of time (putting as many meetings on Monday as possible to free up later days in the week). If this could happen without me thinking about it I'd love it!

modo_··on Show HN: I trained a deep learning model to build sites for me
Sorry to be a bit meta here-- but a question about the design of the site.

This style of pastel colors, wavy svg graphics, and happy avatars seems super popular right now [1] [2] [3]. I'm curious if it has a name and where it originated from (if anywhere?)

Overall I like the aesthetic quite a bit, but it's such a distinctive look. I'm surprised I keep seeing it crop up nearly copy+pasted between all of these companies

modo_··on Lyft Takes over Ford GoBike
I struggle to justify the purchase as a whole, but I think one component of the value a company like uber or lyft gains from an acquisition like this is to have a stronger stake in my transportation mindshare.

If I'm opening their app regardless of which transportation method I end up using, I'm more likely to keep coming back and will frequently choose to move up a tier (scooter -> bike -> car) if the price is "just a few dollars more".

It's worth considering the data component as well -- there's a tangible benefit to knowing which mode of transportation people are choosing for which trips.

modo_··on Facebook adds 5 divs, 9 spans and 30 CSS classes to every post in the timeline
The ad-blocking side of the puzzle looks just as fun without the ethical issues.

modo_··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (October 2018)
unspun (https://www.unspuntech.com/) | software engineer, computational geometry | San Francisco, Ca | Full-time | Onsite

unspun is a venture-backed robotics and digital apparel company building completely custom jeans for each consumer. We are developing an automated process for creating perfectly fitting jeans. Starting from a customer’s 3D body scan, our system generates customized pattern pieces that are then assembled on-demand. This removes the need for inventory and eliminates unnecessary waste. We’re building this by leveraging tools like Blender’s Python API and CGAL to automate the steps necessary to go from a surface mesh of a body scan to customized apparel pattern DXFs

modo_··on 'Picasso', the Painter on GDAX?
It's also worth mentioning this [1] blog post from 2014 on orderbook visualization. It has a great explanation of the methods and insightful analysis.

modo_··on Simplicity and Michelson
I believe this (https://github.com/input-output-hk/plutus-prototype/blob/mas...) is the smart contract scripting language he's working on. Far from an expert on formal methods and language design, but, it does seem to be more fleshed out than the public information on Simplicity.
modo_··on Flippening Watch (Ethereum has almost overtaken Bitcoin in every metric)
I've had the same thought. The best analog I've come up with is searching Github for Ethereum vs. Bitcoin. The numbers (repos / loc / wikis ) are pretty strong for Ethereum compared to other coins excluding Bitcoin -- it would be interesting to plot them over time.

Have you found any other ways to watch this metric?

modo_··on Show HN: HNfavorites – Explore the community's favorite content
Thanks dang! I was super excited when you guys first announced favorites - there's so much cool stuff on HN that disappears after a day or two. Filtering the "Ask/Show/Tell HN" posts onto a new page is definitely a next step - as well as adding a favorite comments page.

Could you guys add favorites to the API? Scraping is pretty rough - Cloudflare doesn't seem to like me.

modo_··on Show HN: HNfavorites – Explore the community's favorite content
Cool - I'm actually planning to spin off a version that just shows favorited comments when I have time!
modo_··on Show HN: HNfavorites – Explore the community's favorite content
Thanks man! Yeah that's a fair point - favorites still have a lot of room to grow. Hopefully this project can get them the attention they deserve.

I'm happy to report that a pretty large percentage of the daily active users on HN have favorited a few items (and some outlier users have favorited hundreds)!

modo_··on Ask HN: What's your working day like?
Very interesting. I can imagine accounting for your time at 6 minute intervals is an acquired skill.

You mentioned you work on side projects in the evening. Are those projects related to law? Wondering what something like that would consist of.

modo_··on Certifications
I think an Amazon Developer certificate could be a good choice. One of the lower level certifications like associate developer[1] wouldn't require much time investment vis-à-vis studying, while still having broad name recognition.
