modeopfer··on Zero regrets: Firefox power user kept 7,500 tabs open for two years
I also wonder this. I feel burdened if I have more than 9 tabs open.

W.r.t. the difference to browser history though: I literally never find stuff when looking through my browser history. I either forgot on which website I found something, or what the name of the tab was. I sometimes wish that searching the browser history also searches through some additional metadata, like the sites description meta tag or something like that.

Same for me. Does rye help? Or what's your silver bullet?

What's the current state of the art of managing multiple virtual environments, running tests and running your application?

On Ubuntu and Windows I use Poetry [0], and it works, although it has (had?) some quirks during the installation on Windows. I liked its portability and lockfile format though.

A few years ago I used conda [1], which was nice because it came batteries included especially for Deep Learning stuff. I switched because it felt way to heavy for porting scripts and small applications to constrained devices like a Raspberry Pi.

And then there are also Docker Images, which I use if I want to give an application to somebody that "just works".

What's your method of choice?

Is that a typo? I feel that this problem isn't going to be solved _without_ government intervention. Large groups of people have an unbelievably high inertia.

But yeah, forbidding restaurants to distribute drinking water is probably not the right move.

modeopfer··on Ask HN: Recent uptick in spam emails and text messages?
Funny, I just wanted to post an Ask HN to inquire how businesses deal with the increasing amount of spam.

At my place of work, we currently get around 40 spam messages per outwards-facing email.

How do you deal with that? What software solutions exist to filter spam that work well with Microsoft Exchange?

modeopfer··on Mailchimp insiders react to employees getting no equity from Intuit sale
Interesting. I as a content consumer feel exactly the same way. I don't use FB/Instagram anymore and rely solely on email updates from bands, brands, museums, theatres and so on. I actually get some MC emails and always liked those since they are so easy to unsubscribe.

Am I the only one who genuinely likes newsletters?

I don't use facebook or instagram or anything anymore, and just solely rely on subscribing to the newsletters of the stuff I like: bands, exhibition spaces, museums, even fashion brands.

Giving out my email tells the almost nothing about myself, except the only valuable thing: I am interested in their services. Most newsletter providers let me opt out with two clicks and I never get any more mails from them.

It really baffles me why there are not more people who enjoy emails, but would rather have another company decide which content they get to see.

I also studied engineering and I think your professor missed the point. You don't overengineer stuff anymore nowadays, not because you want to scam your consumer out of money (aka planned obsolence) but because the design tools got better and every gram of metal or plastic and every screw and every operation like welding, glueing and so on costs money. Nowadays simulation tools, new manufacturing processes and experience allow very cheap designs that endure the predicted amount of stress but not much more. That's the trade-off.

Not every customer needs a power drill that lasts 5000 hours. Most people are okay with a cheap drill that lasts a cumulative 10 hours because that's the amount of lifetime use they get out of it.

> I'm curious if they tried dosing an animal and a human at the same time to see how human-animal interaction and communication is affected.

Well, they did that with dolphins. http://www.theguardian.com/environment/2014/jun/08/the-dolph... (CTRL-F LSD) Apparently dolphins don't really react to LSD. Read the whole article, it's pretty weird.
