modells··on Why Functional Programming is not more widely used in industry?
I'll see your monad and lift you a functor.

Or maybe computer programming should start bottom-up, progress through single-static assignment (SSA) and then get to impure, mutable constructs.

modells··on IRC turns thirty
Design brought forth, intentionally or not, creates everything but the content of the experience. It's the "view" that people see that creates most of the UX.
modells··on IRC turns thirty
Interesting. Last IIRC, Stanford ITS used tinyfugue (tf) MUD which is sorta like IRC.
modells··on The Bitter Regrets of a Useless Chinese Daughter
That sounds like Valley Medical here in Si Valley. Ostensibly, they have to "accept everyone" but realistically, they put people on buses and send them elsewhere. Also, there are many specialties with zero appointments available and no waiting list... they require calling up at a certain time like getting Yosemite campgrounds. So much for capitalism and the miracles of being "better" than socialism.
modells··on Microsoft Bug Testers Unionized, Then They Were Dismissed
Microsoft abused subcontractors to deny them benefits even though they were de-facto employees. It doesn't matter what bullshit excuses Microsoft or anyone else comes up with, because they treated people like garbage.
modells··on The Vanishing Idealism of Burning Man
There's a lot of people whom just go to Burning Man to get high and fuck.
modells··on Why Prosperity Has Increased but Happiness Has Not
Prosperity may have increased a lot for those at the top, but there's never been so many people living on freeway on-ramps until now. For the low end, it keeps getting worse-and-worse in the real world while academic happy-clappy about how "great" everything is. UBI or French Revolution 2.0, so far the majority of rich have chosen social upheaval, Holocene exinction and climate obliteration.
modells··on Nuclear Weapons Nerds
If you want to play with nukes, work at Pantex.
modells··on The Git project selects SHA-256 as the next-gen hash function to migrate to
I'm sure others already asked: "y u no sha3?" on the git dev lists. Assuming quantum computers with many qubits land, aren't prime factorization, EC and matrix math crypto basically DOA?
modells··on Premature brain aging linked to cannabis, schizophrenia, alcohol
Hmm... the big question relating to depression and/or childhood abuse is did they check for hippocampal atrophy or dysfunction? I would suspect abused and depressed people have trouble enjoying most dopaminergic rewards.
modells··on Aerial photos reveal the stark divide between rich and poor
Right/left is a divide-and-conquer gambit. There are rich Democrats and rich Republicans whom are nearly indistinguishable in action and vary only on minor supposed values, both wings of as Gore Vidal called it, "The Property" party. The non-ideological property owners hedge bets on both team D and team R, and really don't care which win, so long as they keep voting for their interests first.

Antifa is fail because they're usually usurped by anarchists and hooligan mobs whom don't know whom they're fighting other than brands and slogans... like tilting at windmills. The enemy of 99% and the planet is most definitely the rich... not D, not R, not Chevron, not [insert astroturfing group] but those whom powerful people whom pull more of the strings to corrupt government in their favor.

modells··on Companies shouldn't give candidates homework assignments
There was a SF startup with an obnoxious, high-density open-floorplan (ie a narrow table down a long corridor like a bad library with the panopticon of managers watching) that tried this bullshit with me. They didn't even look at it, a sample of how Puppet works. They asked about MySQL architectures for scaling reads, writes, HA and backups, I provided clear answers to all of them while they made all sorts of snide, unprofessional remarks that weren't based in facts. Overall, they were incredibly rude, dismissive, inhuman, self-aggrandizing and arrogant muppets. They even had the gaul to call me up for another interview later after previously literally pushing me out the door. As I went independent, I let their HR and recruiter know with some actionable feedback: "Please convey this message to (shall go nameless hiring manager): 'Fuck you. (middle finger). Please go fuck yourself.'" They deserved chewing-out but they weren't worth my time.
modells··on Google created a fake pizza brand to test creative strategies for YouTube ads
Damn, I'm jonesing for a Celeste four-cheese microwave pizza really bad rn. Where might a lowly member of the public borrow magical 1970's microwave technology in the Mountain View area?

PS: Anyone have one of those huge Radarange RR-9 microwaves with that (capacitive?) touch-panel in the late 70's or early 80's? Yup, I'm ooooold.

modells··on Aerial photos reveal the stark divide between rich and poor
In CA, 101 acts as that wall between PA and EPA. The differences are more subtle: less trees.

https://goo.gl/maps/c6t8e6dtHbn

Trees are one of the major factors affecting property value. If antifa really wanted to attack the 1%, they would covertly kill trees around the richest folks' homes and start fast-food franchises nearby.

modells··on Rural suicides among farmers
Yes and no. If you look at the difference in general, average of lives:

- poorer people have more friends whom, by poverty, aren't as able to move as much as first-world people, more physical labor (exercise), more children depending on them and fewer choices / expectations / freedoms... the net effects of these factors lead to less idleness, less depression and more happiness

- rich, first-world people have shallower friends whom move a lot, less physical work (more sedentary, less exercise), fewer children and infinite choices... more idleness, more depression and less satisfaction.

Also, if your entire Maslow hierarchy of needs is met, what do you do? What's your purpose? What meaningful problem can you solve or world condition can you change? These sort of existential crises, I think, lead to most suicides because people feel they have no purpose, no function, no power, no influence and therefore don't matter.

modells··on Rural suicides among farmers
In Syria, ISIS, war against Assad and mass exodus is due entirely to the regime not helping farmers get water during a time drought and famine. No doubt many farmers also killed themselves, but the gamut of hardships fell on deaf Western ears.
modells··on A Parasitic Vine That Slowly Sucks the Life Out of Wasps
FYI: Steve Jobs' widow, alum of Merrill Lynch and Goldman, plans to own the majority of The Atlantic c. 2020-2021.
modells··on Greek island to run on wind, solar power
Costa Rica IIRC leads the world in renewables, followed closely by some North African and Middle Eastern countries.
modells··on Verizon throttled fire department’s “unlimited” data during wildfire
The root problems are the LACK of regulation of throttling algorithms, content classes, obsfucated service agreements and enforcing the honesty of claims. Letting telcos "regulate" themselves and take over the FCC (Ajit Pai, et al) leads inexorably to unsustainable collapses and calamities like Enron, not necessarily within the telco arena, but externalities borne out in the real world.

No regulation leads to social Darwinian inverted totalitarianism where corporations are free to indirectly exploit, savage and murder whomever doesn't pay.

modells··on Verizon throttled fire department’s “unlimited” data during wildfire
There's nuance in throlling and prioritization. All traffic must be prioritized somehow or it's not going to work well for anyone. Perhaps WPS-enabled lines on grandfathered unlimited plans should be getting the lions-share of bandwidth over retail users watching cat videos.
modells··on Verizon throttled fire department’s “unlimited” data during wildfire
Interesting. I wonder how this interacts with data and voice lines on WPS... given priority but not?
modells··on Verizon throttled fire department’s “unlimited” data during wildfire
If corporations are willing to suicide the planet and potentially billions of lives for dirty energy, why would a telco not sabotage health and safety services if it made them more money?
modells··on Ice confirmed at the Moon’s poles
So moon crater ice sublimates slow enough to not disappear a-la Europa?
modells··on What to Do After Finding Hot Connectors on Overhead Power Lines (2017) [video]
There's no inherently intractable reason aircraft "need" human pilots when autopilots are faster, better and make fewer errors. At this stage, an aircraft guider would be able to instruct the aircraft as to what's needed. At some point in the future, AI/ML/DL will replace that role entirely such that the lineman communicates with the aircraft directly. Then, as a further iteration (40-100 years), the lineman is also replaced by robotics on a drone-like platform.
modells··on What to Do After Finding Hot Connectors on Overhead Power Lines (2017) [video]
There's some great videos of installing spacers on multi-100kV live lines and of the Bond villian tree-trimmers.

It's a (un)necessary hazing ritual to justify how much all these MITM attacks by realtors, brokers, title corp, etc., pinch off for themselves.

modells··on National prison strike launches over underpaid labor and prison conditions
It's disgusting but a reality that the 13th amendment loophole expressly permits slavery of convicts. And so the Civil War was won by the South since Plantations 2.0 continue unimpeded. Some counties' DA's lock up as many people as possible in order for officials to earn kickbacks from private prisons run by the likes of GEO Group.
modells··on National prison strike launches over underpaid labor and prison conditions
Prisoners are also unable to become smokejumpers or hot shots because they not only have a criminal record, but don't get the same training such as the EMT requirement, yet they're put in harm's way. Democracy Now covered this topic extensively.
modells··on Startup School: Every Company That Applied Is Now Accepted
Exactly. They filter for pedigree (and sometimes looks) first. Remember which and why schools used to require photographs with apps? It wasn't just a beauty contest.
