mnouquet··on How college became a ruthless competition divorced from learning
Thanks to prove my point, literally.
mnouquet··on Beyond Meat’s Beyond Burger life cycle assessment (2018)
I have killed animals for food with my own hands and don't mind the process. Worst, I prefer a 1000x killing my own food rather than buying highly pre-processed industrial food of dubious quality (and manufacturing process).
mnouquet··on Beyond Meat’s Beyond Burger life cycle assessment (2018)
Beef remains the gold-standard, so to speak.
mnouquet··on How college became a ruthless competition divorced from learning
> Because humanities degree holders are the true carriers of our cultures.

Do you mean by putting themselves on a pedestal without having experienced life _at_all_ and living in nothing but theories. Yeah, sure.

> These people are the ones that work with the primary sources, sifitng them and passing on the highlights.

These days, they are more the people re-writing history to fit a narrative, against any hard evidence.

mnouquet··on A centrifugal spin on a 500-year-old air compressor design
> Cut a pipe on the back of a fridge and it'll run open circuit just fine

Try to run a plasma cutter, or a 1" impact wrench out of a fridge compressor...

mnouquet··on A centrifugal spin on a 500-year-old air compressor design
> The trick is that air compressor is attached to a big vibration damping weight, mounted on big springs, which are mounted into an oil filled heavy steel box, which is itself mounted onto rubber feet

So easy... If it was that easy, it would have already been done, but...

1) compressor are maybe 100lb of solid cast steel

2) owners need to fix mechanical wear, not simply "replace the whole thing" - head gasket fails, gauges fails, hose leak (think thermal expansion / contraction), oil need to be changed, etc.

3) refrigerator system are sealed, air compressor need to pull air from the outside (ie. it can be DIRTY), which means lot of the noise actually come from the intake

mnouquet··on A centrifugal spin on a 500-year-old air compressor design
The CFM rating of a fridge is nowhere close to the CFM requirement of industrial processes.

Plenty of these could have been deadly.

mnouquet··on Peloton recalling all treadmills after reports of injuries, one death
Could happen with any treadmill. As a rule of thumb, I would not let a child near gym equipment, plenty of potential injury / death there.
mnouquet··on Peloton recalling all treadmills after reports of injuries, one death
Safety razor still cut... my face knows that for a fact.
mnouquet··on Bob Cassette Rewinder: Hacking Detergent DRM
> I have beginner-level lockpicking skills.

Pretty irrelevant "argumentum ad verecundiam", but for the sake of argument, you are not "average" anymore. Being able to pick Schlage and Kwikset already puts you in the probably 0.1%.

Anyhow, back on track, the average customer does not refill their cartridges. I doubt the idea of doing so has even sparked in their head. (and yes, the average consumer is dumb).

mnouquet··on AirTag Teardown Part One: Yeah, This Tracks
> after spending $1400

Damn, I feel silly, I have bought 9 phones over the past 3 years and still haven't spent that kind of money...

mnouquet··on Bob Cassette Rewinder: Hacking Detergent DRM
> Is is exactly DRM: it's a digital method intended to restrict the user from undesirable usage (from the manufacturer's point of view).

Bollocks. DRM would have been to digitally sign the EEPROM.

mnouquet··on Flu has disappeared worldwide during the Covid pandemic
1. not doing that, 2. never done that, 3. don't care about personal hygiene that much

I'm surprised I'm still alive...

mnouquet··on Flu has disappeared worldwide during the Covid pandemic
Which doesn't mean it's necessarily a good thing, as all these bugs will come back with a vengeance against immune systems.
mnouquet··on A house 3D printed from raw earth
Reliance on non-repairable electronics everywhere, fully sealed mechanical parts, etc. Efficiency comes at the cost of more moving parts, more sensors, higher pressure, tighter tolerances, which all introduces more failure points harder to debug/replace. Not to mention lighter thinner non-cost prohibitive materials are easier to damage.

As a rule of thumb, I will only buy pre-2008 vehicles, things only went from bad to worst after that era.

mnouquet··on A house 3D printed from raw earth
The modern car's engineering of modern car might be astonishing, but at this point there is so much disposable parts that I question their environmental friendliness...
mnouquet··on A house 3D printed from raw earth
> Trying to build an eco-structure

This doesn't even qualify as "eco-structure". R-value is pretty terrible.

mnouquet··on A house 3D printed from raw earth
> The bulk of a house (and its major cost component) is the structure

That's blatantly false, the structure is the easy part.

mnouquet··on “They introduce kernel bugs on purpose”
> But if some one you encounter is consistently playing tricks on you, why associate with them?

Do you mean that when a small minority commit an abuse (edit: questionable here), the whole group should be condemned ? Me-think HN is as hypocrite as can be on this subject...

mnouquet··on “They introduce kernel bugs on purpose”
Being a maintainer is being a gate-keeper, by definition. Don't get me started about their "time", most of these guys are paid to work on the linux kernel, eg. Greg Kroah-Hartman is paid by the Linux Foundation. it's literally his job. Linus has balls, I'm afraid Greg KH is a Karen compared to him.

Other than that, they got caught red-handed accepting shit patch and complain about ethical issues when the fault is entirely on their side for not doing their job properly.

This whole thing points to a single question: how many times did they accept patch from black hat individuals who did not disclose their intention ?

This question the Linux development security model and highlight it being insecure to such social engineering attacks and they still manage to play victims. That's pitiful... Own it, say you fucked up accepting the patch, don't blame other for your own incompetence.

In other news: the three little pigs ban wolves after wolves exposed the dubious engineering of the straw house by blowing on it for a research paper.

> Physical art is different. (hang with me here, but..)

No, it is not. Picasso died dirt poor, he never beneficiated in large sums from his paintings. It just happen he was crazy enough to make a name and now people brag about him.

mnouquet··on You can't censor away extremism or any other problem
There was an old adage saying that you should not do upon other what you wouldn't want to be done to you. Remember that being gay was in the crosshairs ? By bullying perceived right-wing ideas, you only expose yourself to a pendulum swing.

Never forgive, never forget.

ps: I have been harassed, bullied, I will not surrender my guns to the [old] new bullies, NEVER.

You can put all the money you want to increase the speed of light, and you will certainly see a lot of snake-oil startup promising an increased speed of light, and their share of Kool-aid drinker here on HN, but the speed of light will never increase...
mnouquet··on Oakland bans the use of combustion engine-powered leaf blowers and trimmers
> That's what they used to say about cars, too. Innovation

Yet I can still drive 500 miles hauling 2500lb (8000lb gross weight), or haul 40,0000lb (80,000lb gross) over 2,000 miles without refueling / recharging.

No electric vehicle can do that, still today.

Let me know when an electric vehicle will be able to haul 100,000lb of grain all day long by -20C, then we'll talk.

mnouquet··on Oakland bans the use of combustion engine-powered leaf blowers and trimmers
Because your standard 1.5HP 110V circuit has as much torque an as sloth, which is only slightly better than battery operated tools' having as much torque as an anemic sloth.
