mnouquet··on TC Energy scraps Keystone XL pipeline project after Biden revokes key permit
> Alberta should obviously have been more diligent in saving up oil revenues generated

It was literally all stolen by the Federal government through equalization payment. Can't really blame Alberta here...

mnouquet··on TC Energy scraps Keystone XL pipeline project after Biden revokes key permit
> Alberta fundamentally has to shift gears - just like Saudi Arabia.

The only problem here is that Alberta was forced to give up all its money in equalization payment, and has none left.

> Most of Canada, outside of Alberta, has long transitioned away from extraction dominant industries

And yet, Alberta was the most economically successful province, literally subsidizing all others. Go figure how the service transition worked out...

What I cited was 100% first hand experience, thanks for the condescension. I've experienced both systems.

I wouldn't wish either you or your partner to be told to pound sand upon experiencing an health related issue. To know that something can be treated, but to be told GTFO. I wished to have a discussion about the matter, but you are obviously not ready for this to happen.

mnouquet··on Senate approves $250B bill to boost tech research
Same happened in France. Public money goes to French companies which then subcontract to China, manufacture there, to import the final product in France.

Let me guess, this is gonna go straight in Google, Microsoft, Oracle pocket ?

Not only they skip taxes (which I have no problem about), but they lobby to get billions in government fundings...

The complexity of providing online connectivity is many several order of magnitude lower than solving complex multi-factorial health related problems, often with each case being unique, or affecting only a handful of people on earth.

A better analogy would be to expect wired internet connectivity at the top of the Everest summit for $19.99/month with free installation fees. Even this would be orders of magnitude below the complexity of the rare disease treatments.

Did you live and experience first hand any of these two systems ?

> Just take away the profits of big pharma and health insurance companies in the US and let me know how much cheaper the entire thing would be.

It would certainly be infinitely cheaper, yet, all that money would be diverted to funeral directors.

We can talk about France if you want, where a family member was told to "suck it up" after an injury when he was able to go to a private hospital (he's got the money to consult specialists) and get his shoulder fixed there.
mnouquet··on Fedora contemplates the driverless printing future
Until it doesn't. Printers setup have broke under all of the major OS I'm using, might it be Win10, OS X (either via Air Print or IPP), and Fedora.
mnouquet··on Most Expensive Drugs in the U.S.
Well, of course, because in the US, you can get treatment. Here in Canada, you're either left on a stretcher in an over-crowded hospital, or being told "come back in 6 month to get your CT scan... [if you're still alive]". The current pandemic has even gotten worse, a close family member never got the luxury to get an appointment for a cancer appointment even though he was showing symptoms.

> Australia can figure this out but the USA can't? Feels more like doesn't want to.

I went through the cost/revenue data from public Big Pharma companies a few years ago, long story short, the US prices are subsidizing the rest of the world's (ie. really only first world countries) "free" healthcare.

That's utter bs, exchanges generates unique BIP32 addresses for deposit. There isn't a master exchanges key used among all customers.
mnouquet··on Farmers Deserve the Right to Repair Their Tractors
Good luck running a electric tractor rig moving 120,000lb (modern quad-track are ~60,000lb, plus the drill, plus the fert/seed cart) all day long...
mnouquet··on Farmers Deserve the Right to Repair Their Tractors
noteworthy facts: regen is only required because of EPA regulations.
mnouquet··on Farmers Deserve the Right to Repair Their Tractors
Emission control suit of requirements (both hardware & software) make these tractors failure more likely. Eg. from a youtube farmer in Sask, Ca., his NH tractor wiring harness failed because highly corrosive DEF was puked all over it. Wiring hardness is only needed to fine tune injection pump & the pletora of sensors because of regulations, and DEF is only needed because of regulations.

All of this decrease the useful lifetime of equipment.

And no, all of this is not required, a trucked was able to pass California regulations with an old pre-EPA-regulations diesel engine, but the tolerances are a lot tighter (ie. forget about that chinesium oil pump with a couple thousands too much shaft end play), maintenance is a lot trickier...

> I'm not sure how I'm supposed to have any kind of sympathy for a manufacturer who wants to offer a worse product for more money.

Apple.

mnouquet··on Farmers Deserve the Right to Repair Their Tractors
Largely EPA regulations make this impossible.
mnouquet··on Once a bastion of free speech, the ACLU faces an identity crisis
I never said it was ok to censor, merely that it didn't qualify to "lots of".
mnouquet··on Why are American workers becoming harder to find?
But not anyhow less true.
mnouquet··on Once a bastion of free speech, the ACLU faces an identity crisis
> For free speech to be a reasonable thing to priorise over other things you have to have some more fundamental rules of society in place. E.g. fighting for free speech during the rise of the nazi party in 1920s Germany might sound like a noble thing, but once the Nazis whos speech you defended are in power they will shoot you at your doorstep for defending that of their enemies.

Do you mean the actual summary of what happened in the US over the past 50 years ?

"These Rights were convenient at the time we were a minority, but now, we are in power, they are in the way of our ideal utopia."

> I'd rather loose the right to utter certain inflamatory phrases than loose the right and the possibility to vote the next government out of office in a fair and representative election.

And that's why the 2nd Amendment is protecting the 1st. (and all the subsequent).

mnouquet··on Once a bastion of free speech, the ACLU faces an identity crisis
This hardly qualifies as "lots of speech".
mnouquet··on Once a bastion of free speech, the ACLU faces an identity crisis
The 1st Amendment is a hell of a lot more than freedom of the press.
mnouquet··on G7: Rich nations back deal to tax multinationals
The US left has nothing to do with the historical classic liberalism. And no, I'm not trolling, let me know of any socialist system with hasn't turned totalitarian ?

Europe right now has all the characteristic of a totalitarian society, but only beneficiate from a relative prosperity so everybody is riding along. Give it 10 years of crisis and deflation and you'll see a lot more uprisings (yellow vests & alike) and associated "security" measure.

The US is on the edge, and arguably has been in a state of sporadic civil war for over a year now.

mnouquet··on G7: Rich nations back deal to tax multinationals
That's a lie. The idea of Government was sold to the general population as "we'll make your lives better", not "we'll become that humongous monster you'll serve".
