mnadkvlb··on Counting cycles and instructions on the Apple M1 processor
Could anyone explain the instructions/float metric ? Just tried running the same code on an M1 Air from blog, and i get quite different number of instructions/float, whereas the instructions/cycle are pretty close:

# parsing random numbers model: generate random numbers uniformly in the interval [0.000000,1.000000]

volume: 10000 floats

volume = 0.0762939 MB

strtod 376.04 instructions/float (+/- 0.0 %)

          75.53 cycles/float (+/- 0.0 %)

          4.98 instructions/cycle

          88.95 branches/float (+/- 0.0 %)

          0.6005 mis. branches/float
fastfloat 162.01 instructions/float (+/- 0.0 %)

          22.01 cycles/float (+/- 0.0 %)

          7.36 instructions/cycle

          38.00 branches/float (+/- 0.0 %)

          0.0001 mis. branches/float
mnadkvlb··on Mozilla plans to remove the Compact Density option from Firefox's Customize menu
I miss the "close other tabs" and "close tabs on the right" feature when they used to be directly available with a single right click. Now you need two clicks for that and are hidden !! why break something when nobody ever complained about it. Its getting ridiculous, like someone from another browser team is the product owner for firefox choosing how to cripple this browser one tiny step at a time

mnadkvlb··on Signal gaining popularity in India after WhatsApp policy changes
I actually did just that. Changed my status to “only reachable by signal app” also same message on my profile pic. Just got around 5 people who talk to me on whatsapp already writing me on signal without problem. And funny thing 3/5 have also done same to their whatsapp now

Wow, that is crazy. Sometimes weapons industry gives me chills. I am glad that i don't live in one of the war zones and feel pity for those who have to suffer.

Is this true ?

mnadkvlb··on Linux pioneer Munich poised to ditch open source and return to Windows
Fedora has changed the game for me as well. I am a very happy user so far. Although sometimes i see some notifications about a software crash somewhere. I really enjoy my time on Gnome3, there are very few annoyances as compared to windows/osx. Although i feel osx is way more polished in terms of gestures/ui etc. windows had been an absolute nightmare since windows8.
mnadkvlb··on Facebook Has No First Amendment Right to Send Unauthorized Texts, Says Court
Thanks. This is what i needed. FB on mobile browsers is usable again. They have intentionally crippled the mobile site if you want to chat, to have you install messenger, which is probably the worst app(/malware) i have seen.
mnadkvlb··on What Killed the Linux Desktop (2012)
I have moved to fedora since almost 2 years now and i can't say more. It had been one of the best experiences ever after the initial set-up and learning curve. I have all my settings on git now and whenever i do a new install of any linux i just get those settings and boom.

I am very happy linux user and support the philosophy. Its way more fair than any other os where the main purpose is to rip of the people who support them by selling their private data etc.

mnadkvlb··on What Killed the Linux Desktop (2012)
That's the whole point. You can't achieve this with windows, because it runs an update whenever it wants and will just give you a restart at a random time. Happened to me at work during a presentation when i turned on a vm after few days. And then you have same privacy settings scattered around the OS trying to scam you into giving your data to Microsoft, which turns on by default after every godamn update. I would have never moved to linux, if microsoft didn't shove their crap down the users throats everytime it updates.

I have now complete control over everything, and i feel very happy by using a fedora workstation on my personal pc/laptop. I am not into gaming, and even if i were, i would rather sacrifice my windows games just to support an OS which is more fair to the users and doesn't steal their privacy.

SSH over wrong size MTU killed a lot of my time one day too. It took me so long to figure out what was wrong, when a few of the connections would be working fine while others would just show me a dead screen after a while. In the end i decreased the MTU on my machine and it stopped happening mostly, but would still do it every now and then.
mnadkvlb··on “Reclaim Windows 10” Powershell Script
Thanks man.

I know about this already, but the point is that end user experience for me had been getting worse than Windows7 for example (not talking about the UX here). The fact that i have to use powershell or service control center to control the stuff is just not nice. I think an end-user should not be forced to go to regedit to stop Microsoft to install crapware like candy-crush etc.

mnadkvlb··on “Reclaim Windows 10” Powershell Script
I agree with you, that the experience a lot of times not as efficient and that its not for laptops. I had some weird problems on 2015 Macbook pro (max config.) where the linux is not able to shutdown the system, and the whole experience requires a lot of experimenting.

Apart from the above points that you mentioned its definitely not getting you the out-fo-box working functionality that windows gives. But i think i am willing to suffer that much to have a system with more control and an OS which doesn't installs random apps without my permission like Windows 10 does[1].

mnadkvlb··on “Reclaim Windows 10” Powershell Script
I had been a long time Windows user, at home (W10) and work(7/Server/Datacenter). Windows had been getting just more and more intrusive like a malware since the last couple years. I hope they do something to stop that. I have recently moved to Fedora and it is just awesome. Pretty much everything works like amazing. Its not a complete replacement if you are gaming, nvidia drivers are a bit painful to install but everything else just works. Its been stable even after an update to Fedora 24->25. I am so amazed at how far linux has come. I am so satisfied with it that i am not moving back to Windows for home usage.

I hope Microsoft stops with auto-update, otherwise the alternatives are also catching up fast if you are not a gamer.

I hate the control center. Its almost impossible to control the screen brightness. Whenever you try it, two-third of the time it takes me to the music control. It was something which was perfect in ios9. Atleast they could have given an option to choose if you don't want the separate music tab in the control center.

I use an extension called stylish, where you can pretty much inject your own css handlers for each website. I know its a bit tough to deal with but maybe someone can make a list which people can subscribe to just like the ad-blocking lists (eg. easylist).
mnadkvlb··on Vivaldi Browser launches new version with customizable mouse gestures
A few concerns/issues i have: * ON OS X: It asks for permission to keychain under the name of chrome. (i know the cause, but its just a bit annoying) * Is it going to be open source ? (it would be great if it is planned to be open source)

Other than that, i am so far a very happy user. I love the dark theme and also it is very customizable.

I also like the address-bar with size of page loaded so far.

mnadkvlb··on We lost the war. Welcome to the world of tomorrow (2006)
I think poverty is worse than war. That is the whole point of the article, you make masses of people poor and then turn them helpless and harmless by social benefits. Poverty is worse than slavery because people feel sad about themselves than identifying the cause of unequal distribution of the resources.
