mnadkvlb··on Mozilla to put ads in Firefox address bar suggestions
Firefox should split from mozilla and have its own foundation.

I dont feel like donating to mozilla under the current bean counter CEO.

If its an individual organization doing just firefox, i would 100% buy/subscribe to a paid version of the open source browser, which is not shilling my data for ads. I cant believe i am the only one who wants this.

mnadkvlb··on Google sets burial date for legacy Chrome Extensions, fears for ad-blockers grow
I had exact same experience. changed the registry settings in windows and am fine. Didn't have the nerves to find how to do on my mac and am just clicking discard every time. Annoying indeed. i wonder most of this shit is probably from the mozilla funding requirements to nerf the browser.

For eg. why tf would you put a separate scroll menu on tab right click to close tabs on left or right, it saves literally 1 row. and increases every single tab change to two clicks. UI disaster!!

i hope some group forks firefox and i will happily donate. But, due to current mozilla ceo siphoning money, not gonna donate a penny.

mnadkvlb··on Do not leave XPS laptop in any sleep/hibernate/standby mode when placed in a bag
true, but i actually turn that explicitly off on physical network settings in windows.

My guess is windows will apparently not let u control such things, as the advertising data pipe has to be alive no matter what. Microsft seems to be both google and apple at the same time, selling ads and hardware.

mnadkvlb··on Do not leave XPS laptop in any sleep/hibernate/standby mode when placed in a bag
Recently bought a 7390 latitude (2-3 years old). amazing machine for basic remote desktop and basic office work etc. Battery lasts 10+ hrs on light work.

Had the sleep states turned on and would randomly die at 60% battery while sleeping. Found out its a long standing bug in dells. Sometimes it just restarts the machine so if its in a bag it will just keep running.

Turned of sleep states in firmware and instead now it goes to hibernate on sleep. No random behavior or shutdown.

Its mind boggling this shit used to work totally fine on older laptops, no idea what changed.

mnadkvlb··on Intel is reducing server chip pricing in attempt to stem the AMD tide
I have tried buying microsoft arm computers since the last two gens now both the surface prox x with qualcomm sq1 and sq2 as well as another yoga book 5g.

Windows performance on these platforms is so trash, you feel like going back ten years on ultrabooks. Even their own apps are not optimized or some like visual studio didnt even run.

Compare that to x86 builtin emulation on apple m1, it performs so close to native performance on a 1000 bucks macbook air.

Microsoft has definitely different priorities like how to chnange settings for a user without their permissions or how to hide settings so users have less choice. windows experience has been so downhill since win7.

mnadkvlb··on Apple Won a Battle to Lose the War
i recently tried on spotify and disney plus as well, works like a charm.

The worst offenders in recent history were bloomberg (where i had to open a support case to cancel) and some other news publication. FT was the best experience in news publications. More and more services seem to be getting better in this.

mnadkvlb··on How do I turn off the “Try the new Safari” notification?
Good point.

Honestly, not sure. At some point i think i will have to run a firewall when these guys won't allow custom dns anymore.

I had in past looked into putting a pfsense but its definitely not a good fit for raspberry hardware, if you have a fiber/gigabit internet.

mnadkvlb··on How do I turn off the “Try the new Safari” notification?
I love apple hardware, but despise the software.

I could only live with apple after I have blocked all apple nagware domains at pihole. Life is beautiful now: * i don't get update notifications, while i am watching a movie on apple tv. ( who thought thats a good idea ?? ) * i don't get nagware on phone to update the phone * no more "please use icloud" bs

Honestly, whenever i want to update my device i see latest version and reviews. If a bunch of reddit posts show it to be nagware than actual updates, i skip it.

Of course, it needs some work on my part. But if you like apple hardware, this might be a good way.

If you are looking for domains to block, let me know and i can send the full list including some regexes that i use in pihole.

Just want to add another advice for “brother” as well as any other brand laser printers.

If your printer says it cant print any more as the ink is gone, just go search to internet to find how to reset the cartridge counter, and then the same (wink) “empty” cartridge will print for another couple 100 to 1000 sheets of paper.

For me that meant 3 more years of printing and still going on reportedly “empty” cartridges.

What These companies are doing is criminal and no different than dieselgate. Mis-reporting wrongly to throw cartridges to landfills.

mnadkvlb··on Toyota is quietly pushing Congress to slow the shift to electric vehicles
oh, that makes sense. Its been a long time i saw diesel engines and probably thought its a past thing. Apparently not :)
mnadkvlb··on Toyota is quietly pushing Congress to slow the shift to electric vehicles
where i live in Switzerland the prices for: 1. hyundai kona 64kwh (480km range): 33k swiss francs (1 franc ~ 1usd) 2. toyota prius base model: 31k swiss francs 3. tesla model 3: 40k swiss franc

I honestly find no reason to invest in an ice/hybrid when i can get way better warranty on a korean hyundai at similar price or get a tesla for 9k more if i want something very shiny.

Personally i use car sharing here and use couple times a month for electric renault zoe here, which is still way less than what it would cost me to lease or buy any of the cars i mentioned above.

Your mileage may vary. My experience so far has been mostly low quality stuff from aliexpress with very long shipping periods.

I found the ratings on aliexpress to be completely useless. as compared to aliexpress, even amazon ratings feel legit (which has probably the lowest reputation from my experience).

I had way better experience with local vendors here in Switzerland or even shipped from Germany for all kinds of qualities.

The local vendors here also have way better support and very quick shipping times.

mnadkvlb··on Programmer's Resignation from 1985
That would be fun, i know its hard to trust car manufacturers with software, but one can alwys wish.

I just wish if some company create an android/ios app, it would be definitely easier to create than working on some random hardware found in car infotainment for which its hard to find developers.

Now any tablet can be my infotainment. I only need navigation and music to be integrated in app. No other features what so ever.

Basically what volkswagen e-up / skoda e-citigo has done.

mnadkvlb··on Programmer's Resignation from 1985
i agree with reliability.

Just the rest of stuff is so bad, i mean for a car worth 25-30k i expect a touchscreen that is not absolute lemon from the start. Or just give me an api over network/bus that someone can create an app for it and i can just run a tablet which would be a total of say (300 bucks for a decent tablet, 100 bucks for the app ).

Not a fan of teslas at all, but i hope they put the direction of industry to have a decent infotainment as default. Korean/German cars seem to have a bit better infotainment.

mnadkvlb··on Programmer's Resignation from 1985
and their cars interior is by far the worst for price range. Infotainment is so bad that sometimes the touch response happens like 4-5 seconds later on a four year old corolla hybrid. Worst interior in a car i experienced

Sorry, i dont think that is a good idea.

Its like telling me that its ok if a company shits in my garden and then donates some money to the public cleaning fund.

I dont want to have trash in my garden or deal with shit from companies.

We are actively trashing this planet for younger generations. To feel good we say, no problem to companies if they donate some money to charities or organizations which do some cleanup.

Why allow companies to pollute in first place ?

Oh wait, because of lobbies.

Never Mind.

mnadkvlb··on Counting cycles and instructions on the Apple M1 processor
thanks a lot, yea it makes sense. Edit: it seems weird when i think that on the blog it takes 490 instructions whereas in my case it takes 360. That is roughly 26% less instructions required than on blog. Instructions per cycle are more or less same on both results, telling me that my M1 Air is somehow using less instructions to run the same code (or is faster)
