mmustapic··on Meta's memo to employees rolling back DEI programs
My man, Meta is full of middle aged white men. Do you think they’ve been discriminating the OP specifically for 10 years?
mmustapic··on Meta's memo to employees rolling back DEI programs
Maybe you got better at your profession. Maybe they are discriminating non whites now. Or a position just opened that’s great for someone like you.
mmustapic··on Meta's memo to employees rolling back DEI programs
That’s not necessarily true. In fact, by not having DEI programs, companies could, because of leaders’ own biases, reject better suppliers based on owners or employees being minorities.
mmustapic··on Type 2 Diabetes and cardiovascular disease attributable to sugar beverages
Latin America is very big, I don’t think you can generalise your experience to a whole subcontinent.
mmustapic··on Killed by LLM
Let me tell you about my mother
mmustapic··on I am rich and have no idea what to do
Wait, so the Department Of Government Efficiency spent time and money recruiting a millionaire who left after just 4 weeks? Talk about inefficiency…
mmustapic··on After a 24-second test of its engines, the New Glenn rocket is ready to fly
N-1 failed because of a lack of time/funding, not because the design was inherently flawed.
mmustapic··on Is Iceland getting ready to join the EU?
It was easy for me to work in Belgium, but I didn’t have a car or a company from a different country.
mmustapic··on What we know about CEO shooting suspect
Yes, of course, of course. CEOs just follow the laws strictly. That's why Thompson is accused of insider trading, because of legislation.
mmustapic··on What we know about CEO shooting suspect
Ah, right, it’s never the CEOs blame for bad things, that’s why they get they are paid so little. Or was it the other way around, they are paid a lot because of their responsibility?

Anyway, it’s the State’s and regulations fault, as usual.

mmustapic··on Starship Flight 5: Launch and booster catch [video]
And yet, without the funding for CRS from NASA Spacex would’ve gone broke or at least wouldn have built F9 much much later.
mmustapic··on Ultra high-resolution image of The Night Watch (2022)
What I do like about those paintings is the techniques used: relief to give some parts more volume, simple strokes to portray glass or metal reflections, other kind of simple strokes for textiles. As you say, now we have photographs, but it amazes me how what they could do without that technology.
mmustapic··on Madrid bans hired e-scooters over safety concerns
If you are implying that the city banned e scooter rental because it competes with the bike sharing company you are probably wrong. I live in Gent, Belgium, and there is no e scooter sharing, while we have several bike sharing companies.
mmustapic··on The Third Atomic Bomb
> The main concerns were that the Japanese government was simply not in a place where it could surrender

That’s the horrifying thing, killing hundreds of thousands of civilians so your enemy surrenders.

mmustapic··on Proposed ballot measure to raise corporate taxes, give every Oregonian $750/year
Exactly. Populism usually means "the people vs the elite", and in this case is just taxes.
mmustapic··on Proposed ballot measure to raise corporate taxes, give every Oregonian $750/year
All taxes are taking money from others. In this case it's taking it from corporations and giving them to every citizen. In other cases you take it from citizens and give it to other citizens, the military, corporate subsidies, etc.

Also, populism means something else.

mmustapic··on 'Lavender': The AI machine directing Israel's bombing in Gaza
Would Israel blow an israeli hospital if Hamas took the basement?
mmustapic··on New Aztec Codices Discovered: The Codices of San Andrés Tetepilco
If you feel closer to Charlie, yes
mmustapic··on Giant Volcano Discovered on Mars
Cheaper how? NASA doesn’t fly their own rockets or spaceships, so there’s no comparison.
mmustapic··on Exploring Bauhaus: Revolutionary design school that shaped modern world
> Compare that with an earlier building like the empire state building and we see the exact opposite.

> More complex forms. More craftsmanship required to create the overall decor and trim designs, and no doubt more cost compared to a bauhaus style building one could make with some chicken wire, plaster, and cheap windows.

The Empire State was built in 410 days.

mmustapic··on Cystic fibrosis breakthrough has given patients a chance to live longer
Alzheimer is not aging, it is a specific disease. Same as cancer. Sure, advanced age can make you more susceptible to some diseases, but aging itself is not one.
mmustapic··on Cystic fibrosis breakthrough has given patients a chance to live longer
Many incurable diseases come with an awful quality of life, like CF. Even cancer, treated or not, is a terrible experience. Just aging, what you call “a disease”, is nothing like that.
mmustapic··on The Empire Strikes Back First Draft by Leigh Brackett (1978) [pdf]
> What was the relationship then? In a New Hope, it’s known that Anakin was Vader, right?

From a certain point of view.

mmustapic··on Virgin Galactic successfully flies tourists to space for first time
This is useless technology that goes nowhere except this specific use case
mmustapic··on Virgin Galactic successfully flies tourists to space for first time
GP is correct, there is no path from the current Virgin Galactic launches to something that is not a very expensive space ride for rich people. They can't launch satellites, they can't make it into orbit, nothing. Only the dream of seeing earth from an altitude of ~80km while expending a tremendous amount of energy.

Also, your explanation of why GP attitude is evil is not clear at all. You can dream and still thing that this is stupid. In fact, the dream of a nice earth for all of us is a beautiful dream, much more than a 5 minute ride for a very few.

And the inclusion of nuclear power when it was not mentioned in the original post is like a GPT hallucination.

mmustapic··on Tesla created secret team to suppress thousands of driving range complaints
It is true that it's very accurate. I was on a trip that predicted 22% battery on arrival, and I had 21%. The last 5-10km were mostly descending down a valley, so lot of regeneration. Thus, when I arrived, 22%, as predicted.
mmustapic··on SpaceX's Starship didn't immediately respond to a self-destruct command
Starship not separating, launch stand disintegrating, 5-6 raptors not working, HPUs exploding, all of those were failures. That doesn't mean the test as a whole was a failure, but you cannot say that everything worked fine.
