mmusc··on Next UK election is set to be most unequal for over 60 years, finds IPPR
There are several perplexing aspects of UK elections:

* They allow me to vote (possibly due to colonial Commonwealth guilt). * You cast a vote using a pencil. How is there no voting fraud? * They elect only one person per district. In areas where there is a 50-50 split in the voter base, half the population is not represented.

mmusc··on A search for technosignatures around nearby stars
That's the whole premise of The Dark forest hypothesis https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dark_forest_hypothesis
mmusc··on Ask HN: Anyone else notice that HN isn’t full of JavaScript frameworks lately?
The Dev experience and documentation is way better
mmusc··on Minimum Viable Hugo
I found elevently the best of the bunch, as it deals with html and js so no need to spin up extra sdks or builds to get things going.

The docs aren't great either but didn't find them as cryptic as Hugo docs.

mmusc··on Weird Laptops are Coming – CES 2023
That 2 screen yoga looks interesting. You get a lot of desktop space and lots of configuration options.
mmusc··on What happens when babies are left to cry it out?
This. Both my kids were sleep trained but never involved leaving them to cry it out.

You let them cry for a min or two but no then you go in and soothe them.

mmusc··on Ask HN: What is example of good documentation in your opinion?
Vuejs documentation. They have an API reference and a guide. Can go to 0 to using the framework in no time, and contains all you could possibly need once you dive deeper.
mmusc··on Tell HN: Duty of care
Back when I was studying Computer Science, the fact that Computer engineering is not engineering was a very hot topic. Engineering comes with certain guarantees. If a you don't put a load more than X on a bridge for the next X years. It will not break.

How can we offer that guarantee as a profession when hardware, drivers, OSes and even libraries that we use change and shift without our control and sometimes consent?

mmusc··on Ask HN: Is there a developer laptop that does not suck and is not a Mac in 2022?
Some of the lenovo legion laptops don't look very "gamey". You still get the excellent cooling and performance. Only complaint is the battery life but I use it mostly on my desks so its not really an issue.

mmusc··on We don't know how to fix science (2021)
and the collected data should be always available
mmusc··on Ask HN: What to get for my brother's 50th birthday?
Same here!
mmusc··on Ask HN: How do you manage your companies knowledge base?
The startup I'm working on right now is actively trying to solve this problem.

https://workpilot.io The platform is part wiki/ part proċess management tool. After lot's of user discussions it became apparent that lots of business know how falls into those two categories. With the latter being easier to reuse and track.

mmusc··on New York City bans natural gas in new buildings
London banned gas stoves in apartments years ago. They did that to reduce the risk of fires. Citizens adjusted fine, no one went hungry and life went on..

While I agree with you the gas stove tops are better, electric ones work OK

mmusc··on The never-ending product requirements of user authorization
We're in the middle of redesigning our access control layer. Following the requirments of our platform and the need for simplicity we ended up with an almost identical system.

Thanks for sharing the article it was a good read and validation.

mmusc··on Covid in Sydney: Military deployed to help enforce lockdown
Lockdowns are annoying but tolerable. Whats frustrating is being imprisoned with no way of travelling in or out of Australia.

I have not seen my family in 2 years now, and with the current attitude of this government it looks like it will be another year before there is movement....

mmusc··on London put in emergency lockdown as U.K. fights new strain
Contract tracing wasn't very effective. What worked in Melbourne was that 8 months of house arrest for everyone living in the city...

I'm all for managing the virus spread but if the policies are a piece of meat, in the UK the policies are uncooked in Melbourne they were burnt.

mmusc··on Code scanning for security vulnerabilities now available
If I read correctly code scanning is based on CodeQL, and i found this https://help.semmle.com/codeql/supported-languages-and-frame...

So it looks like it supports C/C++/C#/Go/Java/JS/Python/TS

mmusc··on What it’s like to go into lockdown for the second time
Current lockdown rules restrict us to 5km radius from our homes.. so most likely they can't get to the hiking spots. I'm in a similar situation. It sucks!
mmusc··on Available for preorder today, Surface Duo
The duo is running android. A lot of software issues should just not be there
mmusc··on Winston Churchill’s Image Removed in UK/US Search Results?
Yeah so now we're in a world where Winston Churchill is censored. But Hitler is not.

I understand it's just a picture but it's a slippery slope.

A search engine should return results based on your search query. What if the person searching wants to learn about the very subject they are trying censor.

There's a big difference between moving/removing a statue and purging all records online.

mmusc··on Ask HN: Can I make you an admin dashboard for your side project?
Can you post some examples? What do these dashboards look like?
mmusc··on Nuxt.js over Vue.js: when should you use it and why
As others pointed out nuxt can be very restrictive when you're trying to build something that doesn't fit their mould. What I end up using is vanilla vue.js and a cli plugin to statically generate the pages that need to be SEO friendly during build. Best of both worlds.
mmusc··on London's Answer to New York's High Line? You Must Be Joking
London has already several hidden paths that follow ancient streams and old railway tracks. They aren't as famous so stumbling on these hidden gems are a real treat.

Having to create a new artificial one defeats the purpose..

mmusc··on Ask HN: How do you currently solve authentication?
In .net world aspnet identity give you a basic login, can add social logins and identity server adds auth2 support. Both highly customizable
mmusc··on Ask HN: Not resting fully because can't sleep long enough
Try some melatonin spray. Does wonders for me
mmusc··on Ask HN: How do you organize and manage database migrations?
I prefer dB first.

Create an SQL project that defines the schema. It automatically compares the schema with your current dB schema and auto generates a migration script for you.

Then update entities from the dB.

Few steps involved but avoids writing and maintaing migrations yourself.

mmusc··on What ORMs have taught me: just learn SQL (2014)
I don't know.. when starting out or prototyping a new feature I find ORMS useful for moving fast, and the performance good enough. You can always slowly migrate to pure sql for critical parts of the system.
mmusc··on Sanders to propose canceling entire $1.6T in US student loan debt
Some argue that this debt that has to be repaid 'no matter what' is part of what is wrong in today's societies and economies. Here read this book Debt: The First 5,000 Years https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/6617037-debt
