mml··on Our relationship with teeth is uneven, messy and grim
These dreams are extremely common, and are often attributed to money stress, though I imagine any stress would do.
mml··on 1976 letter from Silicon Valley exec calls Steve Jobs 'flaky' and a 'joker'
Well, they weren't wrong.
mml··on Kazakhstan is changing its alphabet from Cyrillic to Latin-based
eh, i took russian in high school eons ago, and picked up cyrillic in a couple of weeks, even could write in cyrillic cursive by the end of the course. it's not that big of a deal (the hardest part was the variations of the "zsh" and "sh" letters).
mml··on Tesla is heading for a cash crunch
sure is quiet in here.
mml··on Facebook Security Chief Said to Leave After Clashes Over Disinformation
As a point of anecdata, I worked with Alex in 2005. He's a standup guy, and one of the best in the business.

I think what's missed in this conversation, is that this sort of shenanigans isn't really in the purview of a CIO anyway. Too bad he got himself mixed up in it.

mml··on The Dirty Secret of ‘Secret Family Recipes’
I once asked my grandmother (RIP) how she makes such amazing dumplings:

"First, you go and find a nice fat goose..."

mml··on Whole Foods employees reveal why stores are facing a crisis of food shortages
greetings, clip maker.
mml··on Whole Foods employees reveal why stores are facing a crisis of food shortages
you lose a case of cauliflower to spoilage, you lose $5. lose a case-worth of sold cauliflower, you lose out on $100 of revenue. this systems sounds penny-wise and pound-short.
mml··on Whole Foods employees reveal why stores are facing a crisis of food shortages
corn != sweet corn

regular industrial corn is livestock feed, corn-syrup base, plastics feedstock and the like. horrible stuff, grown in gargantuan quantities. you can't eat it without at least some amount of processing. it's just not food.

the stuff you eat off the cob is sweet corn. nobody grows, or eats enough sweet corn for there to be a glut of it.

mml··on How I went from programming to consulting (2012)
I switched to weekly billing about 5 years ago. Life changer really.
mml··on Banker confessed to running a Ponzi scheme, but was he hiding a bigger crime?
From NIV anyway: "For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil."

Timothy 6:10. Pet peeve when that word is dropped. Money isn't necessarily behind everything.

mml··on D’s Newfangled Name Mangling
D is indeed interesting. Wrote some experimental code this fall, was fairly happy with it, but wound up going w/ rust.
mml··on Barbed Wire Telephone Lines Brought Isolated Homesteaders Together
It's said that Claude Shannon experienced this growing up in rural Michigan.

edit: Apparently not North Dakota

mml··on Warning Signs About Another Giant Bitcoin Exchange
eh, i sold my 250btc at the hugely inflated price of $20, made out like a bandit i did (bought at $4)! even got my cash out of mtgox before it imploded. a regular uncle moneybags i am!
mml··on Dice-O-Matic hopper and elevator (2009)
humans have an odd relationship with randomness. iTunes had to de-randomize their shuffle system, because it was too random (i.e. you could get the same song back to back etc, purely randomly). We tend to see patterns that just aren't there. I'm not surprised his player complained.

mml··on The Lost Art of Manually Calculating Square Roots
fwiw, I learned to compute square roots in school in the 80s (I think it was the estimation method, which I was extremely bad at).

Calculators of any kind were forbidden at school, which sucked, if you had one of those cool Casio watch calculators. Shorts were also forbidden, because suffering is good for you, apparently.

I've never had to do it since, of course. Though I do now wear shorts on occasion.

mml··on The $100B per year back pain industry is mostly a hoax
As a counterpoint to the "deadlifts fix everything" folks, I regularly (4-6 hours weekly) do deadlifts, squats, overhead squats, air squats, goblet squats, pistols, weighted pistols, muscle ups, snatches, situps, pushups, handstand holds, handstand pushups, power snatches, toes to bar, toes to elbow, thrusters, pull-ups, planks, couch stretch, pigeon stretch, vinyasa yoga, kettlebells etc etc etc. Pretty much total insanity.

I've been a desk jockey for nearly a quarter century, and have had constant low back pain for nearly as long. My back feels terrible every day, particularly when deadlifting, or standing up from sitting on the throne for a bit. Chiros haven't helped (100% quackery imho, I've tried a dozen, and really want it to work), X-rays show nothing wrong.

The only thing that has helped has been classic "80's ladies" leg movements (bird dogs, fire hydrants, movements like shown in the linked video), along with foam rolling out tightness in the hips.

I suspect my hip flexors are extremely strong in one direction, and extremely weak in the opposing direction (medial glute), pulling my pelvis out of whack, and thereby hosing up my lower spine.

Anyway, sometimes barbell work doesn't help. YMMV.

mml··on Wal-Mart is telling some vendors they can’t run applications on AWS
strange, but true: bought a tv on amazon, came delivered in a giant sam's club box. walmart/sam's club are current amazon merchants.
mml··on Flipped Iceberg (2014)
I humbly submit this magnificent calving:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hC3VTgIPoGU

Mind boggling. A chunk of ice the size of Manhattan rolling over.

mml··on Enough with the microservices
Erlang does do this. In fact, it dawned on me that OTP is basically a system for writing "micro services" inside the app itself, complete w/ monitoring, queues (mailboxes) & supervision.

Developers are forced to export public module functions to provide a smooth api for other services (processes, in the same runtime, or distributed).

Thankfully, Erlang provides the protocols and so on, instead of requiring some nasty hand-crafted json weirdness over http.

mml··on Liebster Jesu, wir sind hier – BWV 731 [video]
BWV 582 is a personal favorite. thanks for the link!
mml··on The Patek Philippe Caliber 89 and Horology’s Easter Problem
there's a book along those themes. a corporation's power was measured in "cam feet", and the main plot revolved around the theft of a stack of punchcards with some important algorithm or other on them.
mml··on They Used To Last 50 Years
Miele is definitely the best. Their vacuum cleaners are great too. I have two, and they are both > 10 years old, and showing no signs of wearing out.
mml··on They Used To Last 50 Years
This. Commercial stoves and ovens don't have any where near the fire safety constraints as consumer models. A typical commercial setting will include stainless steel jacketed walls, and a mandatory fire suppression system.

Install them in your home at your peril.

mml··on Summary of the Amazon S3 Service Disruption
apparently this is (or was) a job in japan. companies would hire what amounts to an actor to get screamed at by the angry customer, and pretend to get fired on the spot. rinse, repeat whenever such appeasement is required.
mml··on A cartoon intro to WebAssembly
Livewire, it was called, back when you bought your browser in a box at Best Buy.
mml··on Do Developers Need College Degrees?
I did it my way, but I wouldn't wish that path on anyone. Stay in school kids!
mml··on Ian's Shoelace Site
Same. Taught my kids to use this knot too. I never have to re-tie their shoes. I think this knot is easier to teach and tie than the classic knot.
mml··on Quick, Draw
glad i wasn't the only one.
mml··on New MacBook Pro outsold every competing laptop in just five days
or use an external keyboard, which is what I plan on doing.
