mmebane··on Rethinking the App Store
> Without review, publishing an app with a sandbox bypass, or simply abusing entitlements, becomes trivial.

I would _love_ a 3rd-party App Store that hosted jailbreak apps/apps that abuse private APIs/etc, so long as it was clear what I was getting.

mmebane··on Help the Graphics team track down an interesting WebRender bug
Not in the thumbnail versions displayed in the post, no. And you can't even click on them to view the full version. I had to right-click, View Image, then strip a resizing parameter off of the URL to get the full thing.
mmebane··on Virtualenv 20.0.0 Released
This announcement of the 20.0.0 beta is useful for understanding why it was rewritten: https://discuss.python.org/t/virtualenv-20-0-0-beta1-is-avai...
mmebane··on Warner music claimed my video for defending their copyright [video]
Maybe make it an exponentially increasing cost, such that most people can afford 2-3 renewals, but the cost increases steeply after that. The first $X per renewal could go to the copyright office, and everything above that to the Library of Congress.
mmebane··on Google is finally killing off Chrome apps, which nobody really used
Is there any way to bypass CORS in a PWA? Because Chrome Apps were a really handy way of writing GUI utilities without having to go full Electron.
mmebane··on Download WireGuard for Windows pre-alpha for testing
What would it take to have a TUN-less client that exposes the VPN connection as a SOCKS proxy? The use case I'm imagining is being able to sit down at a machine as an unprivileged user, connect to a VPN, then run Firefox Portable and have all traffic from the browser go through the VPN, all without having to install anything.
mmebane··on EU Countries Back Copyright Reforms Aimed at Google, Facebook
I highly recommend the podcast "Make No Law" [1] to help understand the US's 1st Amendment. There's a whole episode on yelling fire in a crowded theater.

mmebane··on Homebrew 1.9.0
Is there any easy way to list all installed packages for which I've customised options, and what the options I've used are?
mmebane··on Homebrew 1.9.0
> `brew upgrade` now runs `brew update`

Is that documented anywhere? I guess it makes sense for most people, but I often do `brew update && brew fetch $(brew outdated)`, then later rely on `brew upgrade` working without hitting the network. I'd hate for that to change.

mmebane··on U.S. Supreme Court to hear Apple App Store antitrust dispute
You can, but you have to reinstall them once a week, AFAIK.
mmebane··on U.S. Supreme Court to hear Apple App Store antitrust dispute
They have banned the use of VPN APIs to tunnel traffic through a filtering proxy. Apps such as AdGuard Pro used to use this to perform whole-device adblocking.

How will this interact with other privacy tools such as Privacy Badger? Are they safe to use together? Will they negatively interact?
mmebane··on The everything-is-a-file principle – Linus Torvalds
That's part of it. Another concern was ensuring that fetching a random number couldn't fail due to file descriptor exhaustion. [1]

mmebane··on GitLab is open core, GitHub is closed source (2016)
That's odd. I don't know about push rules or protected branches, but squash and merge hasn't been free, but will be in 11.0. [1]

mmebane··on Python’s For - Else
Perhaps `for...lastly...else`? `lastly` being the current meaning of `else` (something that happens after the iteration has completed), `else` being the thing I wish it meant (something that happens when the iterator was empty).
mmebane··on MacOS command line version of the WireGuard VPN is now available for testing
Is there any hope for an implementation that can be run on a Windows/macOS machine as an unprivileged user, and exposed as a SOCKS5 proxy? I often find myself wishing for an isolated VPN experience which applies only to a particular browser, but to all traffic in that browser. Something like Tor browser, but with my VPN instead of Tor.
mmebane··on High-Level Problems with Git and How to Fix Them
You can show only merge commits with

    git log --merges
However, I don't know if there's any way to achieve that with git blame, and not all tools may offer that kind of log view.
mmebane··on High-Level Problems with Git and How to Fix Them
> I do wish git had some notion of sub-commits with their own messages

You could use the "fast-forward with merge commit" style. [1] Then you can treat the commits from the branch as sub-commits, and the merge commit as the parent commit.

mmebane··on NESticle, a classic NES emulator for DOS, is 20 years old today
The transparency problem was common enough with ZSNES to make it into the FAQ: https://github.com/bazzinotti/mac-zsnes-1.36/blob/master/dos...
mmebane··on NESticle, a classic NES emulator for DOS, is 20 years old today
ZSNES certainly had the L+R+A problem, too. [1] I assume the default key mapping hit a failure case with some common limited-rollover keyboard design, but I've never bothered researching it. It's possible it was caused by Allegro, as well.

mmebane··on Problems with Kotlin
> Assignment is not an expression. We've written 20K of production Kotlin code without this ever being a useful convention.

Out of curiosity, what is the idiomatic way of writing an input loop? The C/Java way would be something like

    int bytesRead = 0;
    while ((bytesRead = in.read(buf)) != -1) { // ...
> The ?: operator is great when chaining a bunch of operations all of which could return a null which we want to convert to a default. Here is an example: claimData?.claimTimeMinutes?.toLong() ?: 5L

I think the author is referring to the ternary operator, not the elvis operator.

mmebane··on Syncthing Usage Data
What are the system requirements for running a relay server? And is there any easy way to configure traffic quotas?
mmebane··on Five States Are Considering Bills to Legalize the 'Right to Repair' Electronics
I sincerely hope this succeeds, and is ultimately extended to recognize software as being just another part in a modern device. Especially once a manufacturer stops supporting a device with software updates, they should have no right to prevent users from fixing defects in those devices on their own.
mmebane··on Kingston will release massive 2TB thumb drive
I ran into that same problem when looking for a drive a couple of months ago. I wanted something fast enough to comfortably run portable apps off of, small enough to fit in my laptop without covering up 4 USB ports, and with something more sturdy than a plastic eyelet which would break in < 1 year. I didn't see many options. I finally got the SanDisk Extreme Pro USB 3.0. It only has 2010-era SSD performance, but that was still better than anything else I found which met my criteria.

I would love to see another fast, small, keyring-friendly drive with newer tech. Or, alternatively, something at least as fast as the SanDisk drive, but in a thin, rugged form-factor like the Yubikey Neo.
