mmcru··on Ask HN: What to do about ‘Good at programming Bad at Leetcode’
I interview at FAANG and we do take this into account by holding pretty much anyone over ~2 years of experience to the same standard with respect to leetcode questions.

A fresh grad is expect to be able to solve ~medium problems.

Someone with ~2 years of experience is expected to be able to solve ~hard problems.

Someone with 10 or 20 years of experience is still only expected to be able to solve ~hard problems.

The standards for a more experienced candidate are of course higher for other attributes: Leadership skills, communication skills, etc.

mmcru··on The Brave web browser is hijacking links, and inserting affiliate codes
I use it on iOS because its an easy solution for ad-blocking. Is there a good ad-blocker for Safari on iOS?
mmcru··on I was blackmailed – any YouTuber could be next
In my view, if platforms like YouTube/Twitter/Facebook are going to exercise editorial control over the content they host, they should be held fully responsible for all of the content that isn't taken down.

If these organizations don't want to be responsible for the content on their platforms, then they shouldn't censor content unless ordered to by a judge.

They want it both ways - full editorial control, but no responsibility.

mmcru··on New federal rules limit police searches of family tree DNA databases
People said the same thing when photo-editing software was new. How is this any different?
mmcru··on After 38,000 layoffs, Wall Street wakes up to 'peak car'
The sense of security that comes with keeping a gassed (or charged) vehicle in my driveway doesn't seem like it will go away any time soon. If a family member needs to go to the emergency room, or a natural disaster strikes, Uber isn't going to cut it.
mmcru··on AIM will shut down after 20 years
i've used aim almost daily for almost the whole 20 years.

it is one of the first apps i set up when i get a new computer. when i get home for the day, one of the first things i do is to sign on and chat with my buddy list.

aim is a special piece of software to me and i am disappointed to see it go.

mmcru··on It’s time to give Firefox another chance
If you’re like me, you switched your default browser over to Chrome years ago and never looked back.

Why should I take browser advice from someone who doesn't pay attention? Especially someone who lauds the "simplicity" of Chrome...

I do love how fast Firefox 57 is though.

mmcru··on Windows Subsystem for Linux is out of beta
For me, reading and writing works, but I have major performance issues on /mnt/. `git status` for example is unreasonably slow on any directory under /mnt/.

I tried to adapt to this by instead of writing to the Windows file system from Linux; to instead write to the Linux file system from Windows. After corrupting my profile 3x and having to reinstall WSL each time, I went back to vagrant[1].

[1] vagrant is also really slow on Windows.

mmcru··on “Unix and Windows are very, very similar and they should be bashed in unison”
seconded. please share.
mmcru··on Professional Video Gamers to Be Tested for Doping
I think the problem with a total ban is just the sheer number of people with diagnoses. For example, I read recently that something like 6% of adults have ADHD (I don't have a source, correct me if that is way off). I personally wouldn't be surprised if the incidence was higher among young geeky types. And Adderall isn't even the only drug that these types of competitions should be worried about.

You can only ban so many people from competing without really starting to affect the potential number of players, which isn't something that private gaming-tournament organizations are going to want to do.

are there any popular sites that rely on Hello or Pocket to function?
mmcru··on The Netflix Website Gets a Major Upgrade
my question is, do i still have to google some arbitrary and arcane silverlight hotkey code in order to change video quality?
mmcru··on Show HN: Paywall Pass, a Firefox Addon
my pleasure =]
mmcru··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (June 2015)
CTRL + F "Pittsburgh" brought me here. Watson looks like a great place to work and I will be sending you a resume.

Code & Supply looks really neat, thanks for posting that :-)

mmcru··on Firefox will show ads on the new tab page based on browsing history
what a terrible change. i've spent the last week developing two firefox addons; now i regret that, because i'll never use a browser with embedded advertising.
mmcru··on Mozilla Launches a New Firefox Version Without DRM Support
agreed. i try to explain to people that firefox is an open source program created by an organization that is trying to keep the web free, while chrome is created by one of the world's biggest advertising companies, but they don't seem to care enough to use firefox.

i feel like mozilla should give up on the soccer mom users and focus on being the power user browser. this is already the case to an extent, but they don't market firefox's advantages (like better extensions) well enough, and they don't quite focus on power-user-type features as much as i think they could.

mmcru··on Introducing PackageManagement in Windows 10
why? .cmd and .bat can run any time, and can do just as much damage as powershell.
mmcru··on New Hacker News Guideline: Avoid Gratuitous Negativity
yup. personally i feel that being able to receive unfiltered, honest feedback on the internet is a feature, not a flaw.
mmcru··on Feds Demand Reddit Identify Users of a Dark-Web Drug Forum
you're right, i stand corrected. i should have said that i don't want to host my community with a single, likely profiteering entity.
mmcru··on Feds Demand Reddit Identify Users of a Dark-Web Drug Forum
right, perhaps i could use vbulletin or wordpress with another piece of software handling the decentralization and encryption parts, i didn't think that was built in, though.
mmcru··on Feds Demand Reddit Identify Users of a Dark-Web Drug Forum
interesting, hadn't heard of virtually all of these, thanks ;-)
mmcru··on Feds Demand Reddit Identify Users of a Dark-Web Drug Forum
i agree. recently i desired to create an online community for a small game that probably wouldn't have many users or posts.

subreddits are fantastic for that type of thing, and i like the ease of use and PRAW, however, handing over all of the community's data to conde nast isn't something i'm interested in.

what i'd like is a tool with which to create online communities, which would consist of a message board with upvotes/downvotes, user profiles, and perhaps a small chat system, with good mobile integration. as you said, it should be decentralized. it should also be as secure as possible without requiring non-standard software like TOR.

mmcru··on The CIA Campaign to Steal Apple's Secrets
>Finally, ask them if the method of contact they used was the phone or written (not email) letter.

why should we have to use the phone, or a paper letter, when email is as good, or even better?

mmcru··on Ask HN: How to address female coworkers getting paid less
you must really hate the insurance field, huh
mmcru··on Why Email and Cars are heading down the same road
once self-driving cars become the standard, intersections and merge points can be optimized for much greater efficiency, which will reduce traffic. also, speed limits will be eliminated.
mmcru··on A Site That Teaches You to Code Well Enough to Get a Job
wow, awesome response, thanks for the information. i actually bought two scoops of django for 1.5, only to read that they released an updated version about a week later! i'm not sure how out-of date the 1.5 version is, but i'm going to pick it back up. when i first read it, i felt like some of it went over my head at the time.

definitely going to read up on PEP8. thanks again!

mmcru··on A Site That Teaches You to Code Well Enough to Get a Job
you're definitely right. unfortunately i've been busy with a move and learning angular, which was new to me, so i haven't had much new code. i plan on adding more this week. thanks for your advice =]
mmcru··on A Site That Teaches You to Code Well Enough to Get a Job
thanks a lot for your post. input from active professionals is invaluable to me.

i've actually been working on learning angular for the past few weeks. i've stopped updating my github in that time since i'm just doing basic stuff, but once i finish some more tutorials and documentation i plan on building an angular project to display on my github. are there any particular features that would really catch your eye as someone who hires programmers?

any suggestions regarding the coding interview problem? i see http://www.amazon.com/Cracking-Coding-Interview-Programming-... recommended a lot.

mmcru··on A Site That Teaches You to Code Well Enough to Get a Job
i do have a github, but i don't think i would call it "good": https://github.com/mmcru?tab=repositories

i can definitely improve it, and that is something i have been working on. thanks for the advice though; i really appreciate it. i agree with you that ideally i would be working under some more senior programmers to improve my skills.

mmcru··on A Site That Teaches You to Code Well Enough to Get a Job
oh definitely, i meant that i knew the basics of python, ruby, and javascript, as well as the other technologies (non-programming languages, as you said).
