mmcgaha··on I've Soured on Open Source
I have never fully understood the motivation to work on OSS. Don't get me wrong there isn't anything that I write on my personal time that I have a problem sharing with others or even making PD. What I don't want to do is to be responsible for software that I am not being compensated for (compensation does not have to be money). I have children, grandchildren, animals, and personal goals that require my time so I just cannot see trading away these things to maintain software. I can see how software could be part of my personal goals in a way similar to building a cherry sideboard but the difference is that no one will request features or bug fixes for my sideboard after it is completed.

I thought the same thing. I would have loved to have known about this 30 years ago. If only there had been an o'reilly book.
mmcgaha··on I will not do you a quick favour
Just let them know that what they are asking is outside your skill set. An alternative is to just be too busy to have any time to fit it in.
mmcgaha··on Fear of over-engineering has killed engineering altogether
To construct a building an engineer or architect may be involved but a carpenter is always required. Sometimes our software is a large public building and sometimes our software is a shed in the dooryard. It is important to know the difference.
mmcgaha··on The Origin of Emacs in 1976
So you know how in school when you read that Constantine the Great became the Roman Emperor in the year 306. It was super confusing what was meant by the year 306 but if the book had 00306 you would have known right off what year they were talking about.
mmcgaha··on My daughter (7 years old) used HTML to make a website
I wish it played a midi when I opened the page.
mmcgaha··on Supreme Court rules ex-presidents have immunity for official acts
Good thing the the courts just reigned in the powers that federal agencies claimed via the chevron doctrine. https://www.scotusblog.com/2024/06/supreme-court-strikes-dow...
mmcgaha··on Supreme Court overturns 40-year-old "Chevron deference" doctrine
So you think Trump was supposed to be a spoiler liker Perot?
mmcgaha··on Self-Serve Dashboards
I have been providing data to business users for the last 24 years. It doesn't matter if we give them a query tool, MS Access, Power BI or a data cube in Excel, there are only a small number of users who will actually use the tools. My guess is these are the same users who would have done analysis with data scraped from terminals and printed reports 40 years ago. For what it is worth, execs do like a dashboard with key metrics and the new BI tools make it a lot easier to write and maintain KPI dashboards.
mmcgaha··on POV-Ray – The Persistence of Vision Raytracer (2021)
Yes! Mostly for usenet but also for efnet and dalnet.
mmcgaha··on Want to pay cash? That'll cost you extra
The first time I ever had anyone balk at my cash was 20 years ago when I tried to buy a car and the guy told me he needed a check. It has gotten so much worse since then that now I only keep $20 or so in my wallet any more.
mmcgaha··on The Weird Nerd comes with trade-offs
A better response would be to tell them you are done trying to convince them because you own the responsibility and consequences of the decision. "You're out of your depth" is an insult and is intended to be one.
mmcgaha··on Classic Usenet posts on computer architecture, operating systems and languages
I hope the last post is in alt.obituaries for usenet itself. Unfortunately it will probably be a post about a free ebook download cross posted to half of usenet.
mmcgaha··on Doom didn't kill the Amiga. Wolfenstein 3D did [video]
I think it was mostly because $1000 items were a bit harder to come by back then so kids would do a lot of reading and day dreaming before getting enough cash to pull the trigger. By the time they could actually afford a computer/monitor/printer/software they had talked themselves into how great the product was.
mmcgaha··on Ask HN: Interesting TUIs (text user interfaces), maybe forgotten ones?
The tin news reader and weechat are nice.
mmcgaha··on NYU professors who defended vaping didn't disclose ties to Juul
Smoking was a signal between men and women that we were on the same page. It was also a way for women to initiate a conversation with a man without coming on too strong.
mmcgaha··on Calendar types in watches
My eyes are so bad now that I would rather have a no date. Strangely the no-date watches tend to be out of my price range.
mmcgaha··on Reddit is taking over Google
I just want a little plonk button under each result so I can blacklist sites that I am not interested in.
mmcgaha··on NPR suspends veteran editor as it grapples with his public criticism
I listen to public radio a lot. I am not exactly a liberal or progressive but I know exactly what I am getting into when I turn on public radio. None the less, I can still enjoy it the same way I enjoy an action movie or WWE so long as I am willing to suspend disbelief.
mmcgaha··on McDonald's Closes Amid Global IT Outage
Look at the date on the article below. McDonald's grew into a global conglomerate well before they started accepting cards.

Where I live we still have restaurants that only take cash. There are even two places nearby where you can walk in 24/7, grab what you want out of their fridge, and put your cash in a box on the way out. Cash only can still work.
mmcgaha··on How I Backup
I use a rsync script that does incrementals but keeps full copies of each backup. Although mine is significantly different, it is based on http://www.mikerubel.org/computers/rsync_snapshots/ by Mike Rubel.
mmcgaha··on The mystery of the garage
It is explicit in my deed that I cannot run an auto shop on my property. When people make rules and say it is to stop X, I always ask why don't they just make a rule to stop X. I walked away from a rental once because they refused so I lost trust in them.
mmcgaha··on The web won't be nirvana (1995)
There is an entertaining nova episode on it too: https://youtu.be/PGv5BqNL164?si=XiELEABPvdfELy_I
mmcgaha··on Satya Nadella uses an IBM AS/400 in 1993
We are replacing our 400 with Azure. We are moving to D365 F&O from the ERP that we have been running for the last thirty years. It is in the best interest for the company but I have to admit that I will be a little sad the day we power it down for the last time.
mmcgaha··on Wi-Fi jamming to knock out cameras suspected in nine Minnesota burglaries
Supplement your regular security cameras with some camo field cameras and you will have some hidden redundancy.
mmcgaha··on Wi-Fi jamming to knock out cameras suspected in nine Minnesota burglaries
Security has never been a concern for consumer devices. When I was a kid the local telecable remotes worked on all of the boxes in my neighborhood. I used to sneak up to people's windows and changing their channel. I bet my dad wondered where his remote was.
mmcgaha··on What's new in the Postgres 16 query planner
I have used both for OLTP and data warehousing and both are fine.

I started writing this to say that I would recommend my company move to Postgres if it weren't for vendor provided applications that required SQL Server but then I realized how much work it would be for me to replace the things MS includes like reporting services, integration services, jobs, AD integration, service broker (notify/listen lacks message types). I don't use analysis services any more but when I did that would have been hard to replace too.

This stuff is how they get you. I have no clue how long it would take me to replace all of this but it would not be a good ROI to spend a year replacing what you already have.

mmcgaha··on How to hire low experience, high potential people
I couldn't agree more. I am not sure if there is a name for the tactic but I had two girl friends that probed like that early on in our relationships and both times it turned out to bite me during and after our relationships. It is almost a cult-like tactic to get into someone's head.
mmcgaha··on We built our customer data warehouse all on Postgres
I like Pentaho Data Integration. The community edition does everything I need but there is also a paid version.
