mmaurizi··on Ford's answer to EV supply chain hell: Cheaper batteries
So batteries on EVs generally don't fail dramatically, they slowly lose range over time.

So someone buying a used EV will presumably buy something with enough range for them to get around, and then over time if they notice the range starting to decline to the point that it might be an issue, they'll have some time to save up & trade in their car for a better one. Their current car won't be worthless on the used market and someone who doesn't have as large of range requirements (e.g. a 2nd car for commuting) will still buy it.

There are other issues that can prevent an EV from charging at all, but they have usually cheaper fixes than a whole battery pack replacement like you're talking about.

mmaurizi··on The Celera 500L passenger plane gets hydrogen powertrain
Seems like you need a flying wing design so you can have gigantic wings to put your giant tanks (and also passengers) in. Maybe this https://www.nbcnews.com/mach/science/futuristic-flying-v-air... ?
mmaurizi··on Former U.S. congressman, operative pleads guilty to election fraud charges
"Judge of Elections" in PA is an elected position for running the polling place for a precinct on election day. It's an extremely low-level position that only involves work on 2 days of the year.

It's not a "judge" in the sense someone who oversees a criminal or civil trial.

mmaurizi··on Show HN: 1,900 remote company profiles with tech stacks and employee benefits
I'm wondering if the opposite exists - I'm looking for a job board that will let me search for office-based companies (preferably hybrid 2-3 days in the office).

It seems like every senior role I've looked at offers 100% remote as an option, but spending the rest of my career on Zoom meetings is just wildly unappealing to me.

mmaurizi··on Ask HN: Has anyone managed to deal with their ADHD without medication?
Yes for many years until the pandemic and permanent work-from-home started. I hadn't realized just how much my productivity relied on the structure of the office environment and other people around me working until it was taken away from me.

Our office has re-opened now but it's on a voluntary basis so whenever I go in it's a ghost-town and it doesn't help much.

mmaurizi··on Poll: Is the leetcode grind necessary to land a high paying remote job?
In this case if you look it up on MDN you'll see that Math.max(...arr) isn't recommended for large arrays (ask me how I know)
mmaurizi··on DoE spent $1.1B to build carbon capture demos
There are some industrial processes that emit carbon, for which we don't have good alternatives (e.g. making cement, refining certain chemicals).

Being able to capture their CO2 output will likely be necessary, even in the presence of a 100% renewable electric grid - which makes this a technology worth pursuing.

mmaurizi··on How to Save a Ski Town
Not if they're renters, or the children of current residents now forced to leave their hometowns.
mmaurizi··on Dollar Tree says US$1.25 price point to become new standard
Are you aware that Dollar Tree and Dollar General are different stores with different business models?

Dollar General does not price all their items for $1. I don't believe they ever have.

And Dollar Tree does not sell groceries (at least not any I've ever been to).

mmaurizi··on Will the rich world’s worker deficit last?
Yes, but the majority of deaths has been older people, most likely not in the workforce.

30% of deaths are from 85+, 27% for ages 75-84, 21% for ages 65-74

mmaurizi··on Pandemic homeschoolers who are not going back
As someone who received medication for childhood ADHD, the highly managed classroom environment was never an issue, it was getting the homework done at home when I had to be self-motivated.

Work-from-home during the pandemic has yielded similar issues with motivating myself to do work for my job (but to a lesser degree, as I've learned skills to cope over the years).

mmaurizi··on What Is a Nuclear Microreactor?
This is a great model, because then the neighborhood can use the reactor waste-heat for district heating!
mmaurizi··on EV Charging Infrastructure in America Still Sucks
In an ideal world I think you're right, but practice has shown that many buyers of plug-in hybrids never actually plug them in.

This was especially when they are bought for large fleets - which makes some sense to me, after all, when it is your companies car, not yours, and its on the company's dime when you either fill up the gas once a week or charge it every night, why do the thing that is more annoying?

mmaurizi··on Apple to build battery-based solar energy storage project in California
I'm imagining for a more advanced BMS system that manages dead cells for you, you don't scavenge cells but instead use the battery pack as a whole unit, just separated from the car.

Think something like a conversion kit that turns your Model 3 battery pack that you've removed from your car into a powerwall.

mmaurizi··on Why we’re removing comments on most of Inquirer.com
Part and parcel with free speech (in America it's also right there in the first amendment) is free association.

You don't and can never have, a right to an audience, because people have a separate right to choose whom they associate with, and everyone can choose not to be in your audience if you're terrible/boring/stupid enough.

mmaurizi··on What went wrong with the Texas power grid?
Solar panels don't generate that much power during the day, and even less when they are covered in snow.
mmaurizi··on Ercot nearly at capacity for Texas power grid
There are newer heat pumps that work below 30 degrees, but they're more expensive and not typically used in Texas for obvious reasons.
mmaurizi··on Sales of electric cars up by 43% in 2020
> even now the Europe BEV efforts are ICE cars with the engine swapped out

You should check out what VW has been doing lately - the ID.3 is an EV-only platform and is selling quite well in Europe - much more impressive than their past efforts.

mmaurizi··on Google Maps' Moat Is Evaporating
Google Maps the consumer product is far ahead of any competitors, but the Maps API lacks many features available in Google Maps (vector maps, 3d acceleration, real-time styling).

These feature disparities between the API & the consumer product were annoying at first, but now that the competitors to the Maps API all have had them for years they're simply baffling.

mmaurizi··on Biden wins White House, vowing new direction for divided U.S.
That wouldn't explain why the polls were off in the Maine Senate race by 10 points though...
mmaurizi··on Biden wins White House, vowing new direction for divided U.S.
This is not true, and keeps getting brought up as if it were.

The rest of the developed world has _universal_ healthcare. In many countries it is provided through single-payer, in some it is through mandatory private insurance, in others it is a mix.

Where the United States stands alone is not the lack of a universal government program, but that we have many millions of people not covered by any health insurance system at all.

mmaurizi··on Biden wins White House, vowing new direction for divided U.S.
I think this is a bit of historical revisionism. Yes there are some amendments in the bill from Republicans because Dems wanted a "bipartisan" bill even if they only got a handful of GOP reps (they ultimately got none).

But the Democrats couldn't have gotten a bill more left-wing through the senate. They tried, but various Dem senators stripped out both lowering the Medicare age and the public option.

mmaurizi··on Biden wins White House, vowing new direction for divided U.S.
I would love to be pointed to the detailed climate policy plan from the GOP or a GOP politician that explains how climate change is real, of anthropogenic origins, and that we need to take action to stop it starting in a few decades.

I am not aware of any such plan, or any GOP politician espousing such views.

mmaurizi··on Biden wins White House, vowing new direction for divided U.S.
I mean President Trump literally said disparagingly at a rally "Biden will listen to the scientists" and then Biden put "I approve this message" at the end and turned it into an ad.

You can't get any clearer messaging on anti/pro science.

mmaurizi··on Biden Defeats Trump to Become Next President
Well that was the case pre-2016 election. 2017-2020 Democrats did very well in special elections. It remains to be seen what happens to democratic enthusiasm under a Biden presidency.
mmaurizi··on [dead]
They are trying to model mask wearing as good behavior by making sure they are seen on camera wearing a mask.

They are social distanced around the podium & outside so they don't need to wait to take it off until on camera, but they want folks to see them wearing it. Yes its theatrics bc it isn't strictly necessary to wait, they're doing it for political purposes - to increase compliance w/ mask wearing.

mmaurizi··on Academic acceleration in gifted youth: a 35-year longitudinal study
Pol Pot.
mmaurizi··on U.S. Senators Advocate H-1B Freeze for 60 Days or Longer
Choosing a nonpartisan description of "U.S. Senators" obscures the fact that all of the senators are from the same party (Republican).

An example of where the journalistic commitment to being politically neutral harms the ability to properly inform the reader.

mmaurizi··on Tesla teardown finds electronics 6 years ahead of Toyota and VW
The gigafactory is a joint venture with Panasonic. There is literally a line on the floor that denotes the Tesla side and the Panasonic side.
mmaurizi··on Electric cars grab 44% market share in Norway in January
Colder climate hurts range on electric vehicles.

On the plus side for EV adoption in colder climates, they've got outlets everywhere for people to plug in the block heaters on their cars, so they're totally ready in terms of public slow-charging infrastructure.
