mlok··on Show HN: Haystack – an IDE for exploring and editing code on an infinite canvas
Nice work. It may not be a priority right now but I personally really don't like to have to move windows, see them overlap or not align because they have different widths, and have to resize them... I would love to see a good tiling (with optional padding between them maybe) Some kind of vertical masonry layout ?
mlok··on Your Phone, Minus the Distractions
Also : - Delete the app, use the web version only (Social Networks and many others...)

webapps versions are often less practical on purpose (to make you switch to the app) and that's a good thing : it makes the experience less rewarding and we end up less hooked.

Example : Messenger was removed from the web mobile version of FB. At first it made me angry. In the end, I use FB less :)

mlok··on How many photons are received per bit transmitted from Voyager 1?
Maybe some kind of relay in space (maybe it could follow Voyager 1, slightly faster) which amplifies the signal and retransmits to Earth ?
mlok··on Show HN: Bliss – A constructed writing system for fast and beautiful writing
Also, drawing angles breaks the flow and speed of writing. Back in university, I remember replacing squares checkboxes by circles because it was faster to draw. (And a friend copying me when he noticed it) All those angles seem painful to write by hand.
mlok··on German state ditches Microsoft for Linux and LibreOffice
Munich did it a few times already since 2003. Last one was in 2020 :

mlok··on Saffron: The Most Expensive Spice
I cannot reach the article : a fullpage popup for a survey is forced upon me (on my phone) with no (visible) option to refuse or close it (They may exist outside of my screen ?). And even when completed I cannot leave the "Thank you" page of the survey. Worst UI ever.
mlok··on Models all the way down
You can activate "Reader Mode" in your browser. You will get gibberish (used for the background animations) until 90% down the page, then you will find the interesting text.

EDIT : If you don't scroll and activate "Reader Mode" immediately upon arrival, you only get the signal, and none of the noise !

mlok··on Roll-Invert-Unroll: An easier way to replace a duvet cover
If needed, I grab a cover border, and align the duvet border within it, make sure corners are aligned too, and then again : shake it. It comes back to place.
mlok··on Roll-Invert-Unroll: An easier way to replace a duvet cover
I was never taught this, but I ended up "reinventing" it a few decades ago, certainly because this is the most efficient way ? I have always used this technique since.
mlok··on DongleHider+ Framework Laptop Expansion Card
GP probably means https://tomu.im/ and pointing to Somu https://tomu.im/somu.html
mlok··on Alright then keep your secrets
Do not blacklist. Whitelist instead. By default they should touch nothing at all.
mlok··on We made an animated movie in 8kB
I am no specialist -- and although I understand and agree with the impossibility being referred to -- somehow it seems to me that AI models are "kind of" getting "closer" to this "golden decompression data file". Although AI models are not that huge, from a tiny human input (the "compressed data") they manage to "decompress" to data of mind-blowing quality, highly detailed and in amazing variety, while staying extremely coherent. These results are "inexact", sure (being exact is the aforementioned impossibility), but to the human perception they seem "perfect", which is good enough (for movies and other arts).
mlok··on StoryGraph is the Goodreads alternative worth switching to
But it looks like they also give stars to books. If this site was influential, it would probably encounter the same bombing problems as Goodreads. Storygraph doesn't rely on stars but on moods. This may be the better solution.
mlok··on WebP is so great except it's not (2021)
Wow I am reading it at 170% zoom, and in the fourth paragraph the word "distribution" which contains the "st" ligature is automatically cut and "hyphenated" between the "s" and the "t" letters. But the ligature remains : half the ligature at the end of one line, and the other half of that ligature at the beginning of the next line ! This looks wrong. CSS has probably missed an edge case here. Or is it the job of some "text renderer" in the browser ?
mlok··on AdaptNet: Policy Adaptation for Physics-Based Character Control
The youtube video is here : https://youtu.be/WxmJSCNFb28
mlok··on The world nearly adopted a calendar with 13 months of 28 days
What would the 2-days weekend become in a 6-days week ?
mlok··on Google-hosted malvertising leads to fake Keepass site that looks genuine
I would have fallen like you. But because I use dark mode / a dark theme, this is displayed as a white dot on a black background and does not look like dust on my screen. I clearly see it. It is a white light-emitting pixel, not mistaken with a light-blocking speck of dust similar to a black pixel.

I had never imagined dark mode as a security enhancement :)

mlok··on The importance of handwriting is now better understood
Readable from France.

mlok··on The Death of Unity
Thank you, I wanted to see quality examples like this. I'd love to find a list of high-quality polished games made in Godot, like this one.
mlok··on Paris says au revoir to rental e-scooters
"Older people - who vote regularly and hate e-scooters - turned out in force. Many younger people, who actually use the things. are more likely to have stayed at home."

This might be an excellent lesson in citizen's duties in a democracy, for young people, actually : a vote they skipped has a direct and visible impact on their life.

mlok··on StarLite 12.5-inch Linux tablet
I would go this route :

USB C to USB Hub 4 Ports ($13)

mlok··on Owner of hydrogen-powered Hyundai quoted $175,000 to replace fuel cell
Quoted 104,000 Euros

= $AU 175,000

= US$ 113,650

mlok··on Astro: All-in-one web framework designed for speed
Weird, for me it scrolls perfectly smoothly on Brave/iOS Iphone 8. I wonder where the difference lies ? (I intend to use Astro, so I'd better know beforehand)
mlok··on Codelite
Thank you I had forgotten VSCodium existed and last year I reluctantly transitionned from Atom to VSCode. VSCodium is probably better for me !
mlok··on Car Bloat: “Huge Cars Are Terrible for Society”
At the opposite end if the size spectrum, the Citroen Ami is enough for a majority of everyday needs in cities. So much space saved.

mlok··on Stopping at 90%
Not the same things : Sales goal is to get listener's money. Evangelism goal is to convert listeners into new supporters / enthusiasts.
mlok··on Mozilla Standards Positions Opposes Web Integrity API
Ok, now write the same list for Google. And then we can compare.
mlok··on A Romanian economist legally gamed the lottery
Thank you I didn't know about this ! (And I happen to read this from Paris, right next to the Boulevard Voltaire)
mlok··on A technical look at ZeroNet
I did not know about Mojo Nation. I also discovered it was replaced by Mnet in 2002 : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mnet_(peer-to-peer_network)
