mlinhares··on Has Violence Against Teachers Become Accepted by Society?
nah dude, my mom and dad both worked full time, if they ever dreamed i was disrespectful to a teacher i'd be grounded for a month.
mlinhares··on Has Violence Against Teachers Become Accepted by Society?
It has and parents are very much to blame for this.
mlinhares··on Feds Target AI Critics as "Foreign Agents"
In this very specific case I don’t think this is what is happening. Data center investment is the only thing keeping GDP positive, the moment this stops the real situation of the economy will become visible to everyone and they don’t want that.
mlinhares··on A warning about 'model welfare'
yeah man, someone needs to turn on the server, install shit and get the agent go. agents don't take action without a lot of people wanting them to take action, so this is all bullshit.

if the same people can't prevent the agents from doing crazy shit then they should go to tail. guns don't kill people, people with guns kill people.

mlinhares··on A warning about 'model welfare'
agents don't swarm anything unless people go and direct them to do that.
mlinhares··on The Waymo effect: how AI is quietly making research less collaborative
That’s not common and effective, it’s buzz feed style articles.
mlinhares··on Your intellectual fly is open when you use an LLM to author a post (2025)
Same. I do not use LLMs for writing and I recommend everyone i work with to do the same. Even for code, I come to the code with the idea of what I want and provide that to the agent, then we iterate on what needs iteration or decisions.

Just did this for some caching, started with the structure of what I wanted the cache to look like, asked the agent to start the work, didn't like how the architecture came about, scratched it and rewrote the whole thing, so it fit the model I now wanted.

Was also just having this discussion with friends, that I can only think seriously about a subject if i can put it to paper (even virtual paper). Writing lets me organize my thoughts, clearly define my assumptions and see if any of it make any sense. I can't imagine what it would be like if i couldn't write, my brain just doesn't work without it.

mlinhares··on The car industry A/B tested selling a car with and without CarPlay
I have a 2023 Yukon that i like very much but i'm not going to ever replace it by another Yukon without carplay. By the time its not drivable anymore the kids won't need strollers and I'll likely pick a smaller car with car play.

They could have had me trading it in this or next year for the newer model (that does have some nicer things i'd like to have, like the larger infotainment screen) but the lack of carplay and the shitty native google maps and spotify products that come installed on it are are not acceptable for a car that sells for 90K USD.

GM decided it had all the cards, looks like they don't.

mlinhares··on When declaring an incident becomes everyone's favorite workaround
Maybe there's the option of hiring better people as well so you don't have to babysit them at this level. If you can't trust teams to open incidents maybe the problem lies somewhere else.
mlinhares··on 'Mad honey' that can stop your heart is being sold online
Some people survive by sheer luck.
mlinhares··on Why do I lose my passion and want to do nothing?
Because the factories of factories is mostly bullshit. OpenAI blogged about how it was complicated for them to build a project using AI alone and the specs in the repo, how easy it was for models to get lost, not do what was expected of them and the burden it was on the team.

I don't think we will never get there but we're definitely not there yet. Models still require a lot of handholding to get things done.

mlinhares··on I used AWS cognito for a startup. I wouldn't do it again
No one gets promoted for writing good docs.
mlinhares··on Low-Tech Ceramic Water Filter
Being poor sucks but at the same time being poor also makes you find alternative solutions to the incredibly expensive solutions first world countries use today. I really wish Brazil can invest heavily into renewables and free itself from oil and electrify even more of everything we do.
mlinhares··on Mistral Patent for “Code implemented tool calls”
what an insane thing to have a patent for.
mlinhares··on Deletes all instances of Microsoft's GDID and prevents minting of new ones
I use claude and codex to write nearly all my code today but i can't accept using it to write prose. I still handwrite every single document I have to write and have them review and propose changes, i feel like if i can't put my own ideas into words for people (and claude) to work on i've completely lost it.
mlinhares··on Nashville uses eminent domain to block data center near zoo
The agents will leave the data center and buy stuff from the local economy, didn’t you hear that?
mlinhares··on Why Erdős Problems Are Falling to AI
The number of geniuses in every field that congregate in HN is incredible, too bad they're here responding to comments instead of revolutionizing nuclear energy, math or medicine.
mlinhares··on Did they ghost you?
The chance of a single hire being a make it or break it for the the business is pretty much null, so a single recruiter not having continuity in the processes they were doing once they get fired isn't really something to optimize for.
mlinhares··on Startup founders urge Trump not to shut off Chinese open weight AI
Yes, the administration is definitely and would not start a war for no reason other than to start a war.

People really have to stop sanewashing the government, it doesn't work anymore, these people are not thinking through what they're doing.

mlinhares··on John C. Dvorak has died
same, read a lot of what he wrote back then.
mlinhares··on New US homeownership measure puts people first
The landlord also pays property taxes, so this comment must be trolling.
mlinhares··on New US homeownership measure puts people first
Life is much harder when you don't have a roof over your head or when that roof can be taken away from your or take more from your salary than you were anticipating. I don't think people understand the psychological safety of knowing you will not pay a single dime more on a loan for your home for 30 years. It completely erases that worry from your head.
mlinhares··on What AI did to stackoverflow in a graph
I had a pretty high rank on ruby and java answers, with some high traffic stuff, there were always people trying to completely edit my answers into something else entirely, it was such a shitty experience that I just decided the effort wasn’t worth it.
mlinhares··on AWS: Inaccurate Estimated Billing Data – $1.7 billion
The last thing a billing system should have is defaults, this is such an insane thing.
mlinhares··on My midlife crisis Corolla is fast, furious, and modded
Hard to meet a modder that isn't a loser like this.
mlinhares··on SpaceX bond worth 10% less than issue price – heading for junk bond status
The illusion isn't over for Tesla, not a chance it will be over for SpaceX in a year.
mlinhares··on Stop Telling Me to Ask an LLM
Here's the problem, countering a lie or hallucination takes much more energy than asking Claude something and saying its true. Its the same as trying to fight misinformation on the internet, the amount of energy you have to spend to prove someone is lying or fabricating data is very high.

And having to do this on the corporate environment saps the energy and time of people that could be doing something productive by wasting their time answering a clueless person that asked an LLM about something they don't understand, got the answer they wanted (but that isn't real), and now are asking multiple people to prove it can't be done.

Here's an example, a PM decided they wanted to build a metrics framework, to track team success, with high level metrics. They asked claude to build such high level metrics (out of nowhere, these metrics don't exist), it happily produced hallucinated code that said it was collecting the metrics and the PR opened a pull request. Now we have to go there, review, find out is all bullshit and explain to the person that what they're trying to build doesn't exist.

So now we have to fight misinformation even on the clock.

mlinhares··on Factories are just rooms
The “gossipy, lazy, no work ethic” culture of Latin America is a tale as old as time. Even the Portuguese and the Spanish used that, might want to change the tune a bit.
mlinhares··on AI changes the economics of software rewrites
The only economics that change is the full employment for engineers, as they'll be able to create infinite work rewriting systems every year. Its a win/win for the workers!
mlinhares··on Factories are just rooms
> but my culture is too preoccupied with petty gossip of what others think and third world consumerism traps that prevent any kind of development

Your culture is the outcome of colonization, dictatorships propped up by first world powers, and being ruled by the same families that came with the Spanish 500 years ago.

Might be worth it to also invest time in reading another book, like "Open Veins of Latin America", to understand the realities of what happened to Latin American countries in general, so you stop repeating stuff like that.
