mlex··on Show HN: A map that tells you if a NYC cafe has WiFi, a restroom, and an outlet
Power outlets so you can charge your laptop/phone.
mlex··on The Peking Duck Exemption
Had this once in Osaka, definitely had food poisoning the next few days.

I mostly blame myself for thinking it would be a good idea. It did taste pretty good though.

mlex··on World’s largest vertical strawberry farm opens in Jersey City
Watched this YouTube video on them a year back:

mlex··on Microsoft Opens New HQ in Toronto
Searching on Google Maps, it looks like the "HQ" is located inside Toronto-Dominion Centre, which is an office complex downtown, nothing too exciting to look at.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toronto-Dominion_Centre

I'm sure if they had their own facade to show off they'd have a photo in the article.

That p90 number (equivalent to 204k USD) looks like some typical SDE2 TCs in Redmond:

mlex··on Preview, the Mac app people forget about
Speaking as an iOS developer, we use PDF files to represent our vector icon assets in the app.

I thought it was a bit odd of a choice on the platform vs SVG which seems more popular (and which the Android devs on our team use), but CoreGraphics using it internally ties the whole picture together.

Coincidentally, AWS has a video streaming service already: https://aws.amazon.com/ivs/

Disclaimer: I work at Twitch, an Amazon subsidiary whose tech it's based off of.

mlex··on Elo scoring two years of Magic: The Gathering games
There's already an Elo project for sanctioned events at the Grand Prix level and above: http://www.mtgeloproject.net/

It uses the public pairings and results that were published each round for events all the way back to the 90s. Unfortunately, there are less competitive MTG events these days, so most peoples' ratings stop in early 2020, but that's another topic altogether.

mlex··on In 2019 40% of San Francisco traffic fatalities are from left turns
There’s one of these at 10th Street turning left onto Folsom.
mlex··on California moves to recommend delaying algebra to 9th grade statewide
In Canada, ninth grade was around 14-15 years old, depending on the month you were born. I think the US has a similar timescale for primary/secondary schooling.
mlex··on New 16-inch MBP with M1 Max to feature High Power Mode for intensive workloads
This feels like something that should always be enabled when you're plugged into AC power (maybe only automatic when you're at 100% battery).

Don't forget FRAPS!

mlex··on OBS Studio 27.1.1
Yep, not surprised to see this added when Twitch account integration already existed. Much less typo-prone than copying your stream key in, along with all the convenience features you get.
mlex··on Tips for Better Signup / Login UX
I think there might be a misunderstanding here.

Author isn’t saying “password = hunter2, guess = hunter3, hint = you got the number wrong”

It’s more like “guess = hunter3, hint = passwords must be at least 10 characters”

You’re not revealing anything about the actual password that you wouldn’t know by reading the password rules on the registration page.

mlex··on Zerodium offers $100k for a RCE in Pidgin, who received $25k donation this year
Sounds like the University of Minnesota already has a team ready.
mlex··on Which Macs will be officially supported by macOS 12?
This article refers to the "T2 chip" a lot, which I had to google for: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT208862

"The Apple T2 Security Chip is Apple's second-generation, custom silicon for Mac. The T2 chip delivers capabilities to your Mac, such as encrypted storage and secure boot capabilities, enhanced image signal processing, and security for Touch ID data. (...)"

mlex··on Modern C for C++ Peeps (2019)
Somewhat related; I feel like C reserves a lot of names that though different standards, is there a good list of all of those so I know to avoid them? (e.g. underscore prefixes)
mlex··on Sublime Text 4
A lot of subscription models would lock you out after expiry, plus obviously the terms are usually much shorter.
mlex··on The Lure of H Mart, Where the Shelves Can Seem as Wide as Asia
Love H Mart and highly suggest 99 Ranch as the large Chinese equivalent in California.
mlex··on The Pains of Path Parsing
Great article; in particular I hadn't thought about empty path components too closely and how websites usually just omit them when you try to go to e.g. https://github.com/nodejs//node
mlex··on Building a machine learning model to predict the NBA MVP
Right, it’s cliché but it’s clear that MVP isn’t the “best player” award given how infrequently LeBron has won it. It’s more some nebulous combination of “how good you are”, “how much you contribute to your team’s success”, and “are you doing so without the support of another star”.
mlex··on Building a machine learning model to predict the NBA MVP
This is a great article and a great read, even as someone who knows very little about machine learning models but is a fan of the NBA.

One question I have is whether it’s possible to model voter fatigue. There was a point brought up that LeBron had a solid candidacy in the Rose MVP season but voters didn’t want to give it to him again, and I feel like this equally applies to Giannis this year. Though Giannis’ season isn’t as good as Jokic’s for sure, if they were closer I feel like Giannis would have to do WAY better than the competition to have a shot at the award, given general sentiment about him and his playoff results.

mlex··on The luxury fashion industry is roaring back everywhere but in Europe
The luxury fashion industry seeing a bounce-back seems like just a small part of the larger clothing industry bouncing back; it feels as though all clothing and apparel shopping should rise again as more people go outside. I know I personally haven't bought much/anything in the past year since I was sitting at home all the time, and normally I do shop for clothes a good amount.
mlex··on 18yr old professional bowler converts 7-10 split on TV in first time in 30 years
Love the casting here, reminds me of esports (which I guess makes sense given esports casting is influenced by regular sports).
mlex··on Google Stadia shuts down internal studios, changing business focus
@dang I think that while this is the exact title from Kotaku, it misses the context (given by what site it's on) that they're shutting down specifically their _gaming_ studios.

I feel like it would be clearer if this said "Google Stadia shuts down internal game studios, changing business focus".

Quote from the article: Google will close its two game studios, located in Montreal and Los Angeles. Neither had released any games yet.

mlex··on Google Maps will soon show Covid vaccine locations
Original blog post from Google: https://blog.google/technology/health/vaccines-how-were-help...

One excerpt from the blog post but not the article is that Google is opening vaccination sites with a partner company:

"To help with vaccination efforts, starting in the United States, we’ll make select Google facilities—such as buildings, parking lots and open spaces—available as needed. These sites will be open to anyone eligible for the vaccine based on state and local guidelines. We’ll start by partnering with health care provider One Medical and public health authorities to open sites in Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay Area in California; Kirkland, Washington; and New York City, with plans to expand nationally. We’re working with local officials to determine when sites can open based on local vaccine availability."

I wonder how accurate the data will be compared to a "patient-side researched" site like https://www.vaccinateca.com/
