mldbk··on OLED burn-in test: 30-month update
I have an ASUS ROG Swift OLED PG27UCDM, a 27-inch 4K OLED.

I’ve owned it for 13 months now and it’s been nothing but positive. To be clear about my use case: I don’t watch movies on it, I don’t game much (maybe 10 hours a month), and most of the time it’s just a browser or a few terminals on screen. For terminal work, this monitor is a blessing. In a fully dark room, only the text glows, nothing else, and it’s genuinely enjoyable to look at. I haven’t noticed any issues with text rendering either: at 27 inches, text is crisp from 50–70 cm away, and the pixel density is more than adequate. I suspect the 30+ inch OLEDs are where text clarity starts to become a problem.

Oh my gosh! Core memories unlocked:

> most developers never bothered learning the "go to next error" hotkey and just spammed F9 (compile & run) whenever they fixed a syntax error

We didn't know we were privileged. I thought it was normal thing to have.

mldbk··on The RCE that AMD won't fix
MITM usually will not work in case of pkg managers, since packages are signed. But still, attacker can learn what kind of software is installed on target. So I believe that HTTPS for privacy in case of linux package managers are fair enough.
mldbk··on Microsoft forced me to switch to Linux
Either you haven't been when context menus / explorer was blazingly fast or something odd happens there, since I can confirm that on brand new PC (128GB RAM, 9950X3D, 5090) with vanilla Windows 11 it still lags and annoys a lot after some linux distro.
mldbk··on I am giving up on Intel and have bought an AMD Ryzen 9950X3D
> You know, I'm something of a CPU engineer myself :D

Actually almost everything what you wrote is not true, and commenter above already sent you some links.

7800X3D is the GOAT, very power efficient and cool.

mldbk··on Why was Apache Kafka created?
I held the same view as you when I was 22, more than 15 years ago.

With over 15 years of professional experience since then, my perspective has shifted: Java demonstrates its strength when stability, performance, and scalability are required (e.g. bloody enterprise)

A common misconception comes from superficial benchmarking. Many focus solely on memory consumption, which often provides a distorted picture of actual system efficiency.

I can point to EU-scale platforms that have reliably served over 100 million users for more than a decade without significant issues. The bottleneck is rarely the language itself, it is the depth of the team’s experience.

mldbk··on I'm Done with Ubuntu
I have installed Fedora back in 2017, since that time I just upgrade it: sudo dnf system-upgrade download --releasever=NN && sudo dnf system-upgrade reboot.

Haven't reinstalled it in 8 years. Everything runs smoothly.

mldbk··on I'm Done with Ubuntu
It was a fair point decade ago, today Fedora's pkg mgmt is miles ahead of what it used to be.

mldbk··on Nvidia announces next-gen RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 GPUs
It is an outdated claim.

I have both 4090 (workstation) and 7900XT (to play some games) and I would say that 7900XT was rock solid for me for the last year (I purchased it in Dec 2023).

What is that? Even your custom android build will have some binary blobs for your SoC.

We are just doomed.

Random dude making the same thing is not the same thing what MS does.

1. You have a choice. With MS you don't. You can't opt-out, at least for now.

2. And as prev buddy said, you never know what MS will do with your data.

3. Recall will be heavily targeted and from day-1 some malware will target it. Random dude's pet project doesn't (even though it is a security through obscurity).

mldbk··on I Like Makefiles
Honestly, it is because make is not written in Rust ;-)

This is a sect and global trend to reinvent and re-implement the wheel with the Rust :D

mldbk··on Wild horses reintroduced to Kazakhstan steppes after absence of two centuries
Usually they eat Artemisia[1]. Steppes are full of them. Even in winters horses are able to get through the snow and eat some grass.

mldbk··on Ask HN: What makes Windows 11 perform much worse than Windows XP?
Is it a joke? Today's GPUs are miles and miles away from what we got back then. The is no brainer to compare Nvidia 6600 gt and some 3060.

Raw power that we have now in our PCs and laptops are enormous and some better high DPI handling cannot justify why everything nowadays is so sluggish an laggy.

mldbk··on AMD Zen 5 CPUs Reportedly Made on TSMC's 3nm Process, Mass Production in Q3
I am on AM5 (Asus TUF B650M PLUS Wifi) and I am rock solid at 6200/CL28 with HYNIX A die 64GB. CPU is 7800X3D and GPU 7900XT.

I was able to enable context restore and cold boot happens in 13-16 seconds straight to the desktop.

Get this [1] and never look back. They are HYNIX A Die, with a good timings (CL30) and with good speed (6000 MT/s), as well as with a spacious room for overclocking.

It is Windows 11 thing. You have to disable GPU scheduling at:

System > Display > Graphics > Default Graphics Settings
