mkonecny··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (September 2018)
Lucova Inc. | Toronto | Full-Stack Developer | Full Time | Onsite https://www.lucova.com

> Lucova Inc. is an emerging technology company headquartered in downtown Toronto with a North American presence. We bring technology, data and people together to enhance the human touch-points in the world of offline commerce - think IoT for physical stores. Our tools help brands realize their customer experience aspirations by turning customers’ smartphones into intelligent Bluetooth sensors that interact with the in-store point-of-sale infrastructure - informing staff of their customer’s presence on arrival, enabling hands free payments and generating opportunities for brand moments.

Our target market is the campus market and our mobile app is used to replace the student's mealcard. Using the app you can place preorders, chat with the campus Food Director to provide feedback, check-in to the cashier POS via bluetooth (hands-free checkin) to enable mobile payments. You can also register payment types such as credit card (we work closely with various payment processors). Our mobile payment platform integrates with multiple POS'es including our emerging in-house POS FIITPOS (https://www.fiitpoe.com) and NownPOS (https://www.nownpos.com)

We're a Ruby + Java + Angular based company with a small group of developers looking to add additional developers to our core team and have a heavy influence on our company's direction.

Our culture is great and you get that startup feel while working with experienced developers. We are looking for someone who is passionate about solving problems and loves to get their hands dirty (if you full-stack then it's a major bonus). We are located near Adelaide and Spadina.

mkonecny··on Filezilla installer is suspicious again
Hashes never take the filename into account anyway. He knows this, and is trying to throw users off track.
mkonecny··on Facebook Really Is Spying on You, Just Not Through Your Phone's Mic
Ooops, I misread your message. You are stating they can't access your microphone without the permission - I'm not refuting that
mkonecny··on Facebook Really Is Spying on You, Just Not Through Your Phone's Mic
> It's simply impossible for FB to record audio.

You should check your sources again - that statement is false.... You only have to look at the release notes from the dev preview on Android P today to see that was possible for any background app to access the camera and microphone at any time:

https://developer.android.com/preview/behavior-changes.html#...

> Android P strengthens privacy by limiting the ability of background apps to access user input and sensor data. If your app is running in the background on a device running Android P, the system applies the following restrictions to your app: Your app cannot access the microphone or camera.

mkonecny··on Ask HN: Can you get away with not working?
"working for the man". This "man" is paying for you to do a job. You don't have to do it if you don't want to, you can go back and live at your parents house.

Excuse me if I'm sounding rude but you sound very young, and unaware that what you are doing is illegal and seem to have misplaced resentment

mkonecny··on Why TLS 1.3 isn't in browsers yet
This is exactly with what happened with Poodle and SSLv3 and it's in the article. Attackers were successfully downgrading to the vulnerable SSL when a TLS connection was attempted.

In the future when TLS1.2 is considered insecure, we do not want this workaround in place.

mkonecny··on Why TLS 1.3 isn't in browsers yet
This is exactly what they are trying to avoid. Read the article and you will see this thinking is how the POODLE attack happened.
mkonecny··on Why TLS 1.3 isn't in browsers yet
It is incorrect. Read why personal github pages (username.github.com) moved to github.io (username.github.io)

> It's really puzzling why everyone keeps hosting their projects in us-east-1.

I've been using Amazon for 4 years, and this is the first time I hear their us-east-1 is more "cutting edge" and less reliable than all the other zones. This isn't even listed on their page describing these zones: http://docs.aws.amazon.com/AWSEC2/latest/UserGuide/using-reg...

mkonecny··on Ravens Hold Grudges Against Cheaters
Title is kind of clickbait. One trainer was giving cheese in exchange for bread, and another was giving nothing.

The raven preferred the trainer that gave something. Not really cheating or holding a grudge.

You could also argue the opposite - more of the driving population can now afford safer cars.

If had to guess, I would attribute the rise to mobile devices distracting drivers - hence all the campaigns to stop texting+driving.

mkonecny··on Use of Ad-Blocking Software Rises by 30% Worldwide
I agreed with this "unwritten pact" and felt it was unfair to browse with an ad blocker - however recently the performance impact on my 2016 flagship (Nexus 6P) was atrocious.

Once I installed an adblocker, I can't believe how much faster/less frustrating using my phone to find something on the web has been.

mkonecny··on The advantages of static typing, simply stated
The biggest issue with dynamic programming for me is refactoring code. I feel very confident when refactoring a static code-base. With a dynamic code-base it 's much more risky - to the point where I avoid.

Of course having great test coverage helps alleviate this, but it's very rare where a large project has 100% test coverage.

This is exactly how evolution works though. The genetic makeup of an individual organism doesn't change according to its environment. Only the offspring can have different genetic makeup which can be for better or for worse - this is where natural selection comes into play.
