mkaziz··on US Aid to Afghanistan Could Pay Every Household a Average Salary for 14 Yearrs
You mean the cash that belonged to the Iranians that the US had frozen?
mkaziz··on Illinois Bet on Video Gambling and Lost
4.95% flat rate is pretty high.
mkaziz··on Illinois Bet on Video Gambling and Lost
Illinois taxes are already pretty darn high. Illinois is also experiencing net out-migration, reducing the taxpayer base. Increasing taxes will only make people leave faster. It's a rock and a hard place.
mkaziz··on Tell HN: Google forces location history be turned on to share real time location
Is it opensource? I've been looking for a location tracker to use for my family that isn't storing our locations on the side.
mkaziz··on How Space and Time Could Be a Quantum Error-Correcting Code
> Ahmed Almheiri, Xi Dong and Daniel Harlow did calculations ...

It's pretty cool to see a Westerner, Middle Easterner and an East Asian dude (at least based on names ...) collaborate to push the frontiers of science like this!

mkaziz··on Ask HN: Where did you donate money in 2018?
Islamic Relief is my go-to. They are focusing on the tragedy in Myanmar that folks don't get a lot of visibility on.
mkaziz··on Arabic, a great language, has a low profile
Disagree. I am a native speaker of Urdu, and Urdu is effective only with significant English loan words. The Persian alphabet also makes little sense - we pronounce seen and suad the same way but write them differently thanks to the Persian alphabet being forced on a language that wasn't meant for it.
mkaziz··on Facts and charts that show the world is getting better
Currently reading it too - it's an amazing, heart-warming book.
mkaziz··on Motorola and iFixit partner to sell phone repair kits
I used to own an original Moto G, and the only complaint I had was the crappy camera. I would buy Morotola again if they made reasonable sized phones.
mkaziz··on Why non-Muslims are converting to sharia finance
do you have recommendations for reading up on this?
mkaziz··on Why non-Muslims are converting to sharia finance
From my understanding, stunning is still done in the West for producing halal meat- you just have to be careful not to kill the animal, so usually lower-level shocks are used.
mkaziz··on Does anyone know of an alternative to Google Voice?
Got any recommendations?
mkaziz··on Is Saudi money becoming radioactive?
I'm surprised this isn't being talked about more, given hostility to China from the current US administration.
mkaziz··on Does anyone know of an alternative to Google Voice?
What did you switch out for Gmail?
mkaziz··on IRL Glasses Block All the Screens Around You
The Kickstarter has a postscript that says not to wear them while driving.
mkaziz··on How to delete Facebook and not lose your friends and photos
Unfortunately, deleting facebook means losing captions on your photos. Most of my college memories are captioned, so I can't just delete my account :(
mkaziz··on Millennials Are Causing the U.S. Divorce Rate to Plummet
> These days, pretty much the only people who never have sex before marriage are religious extremists

That's an incredibly ignorant and inflammatory thing to say.

mkaziz··on Why don’t college students vote absentee? (Hint: Stamps)
I'm not challenging your first or second sentence. I'm challenging your third sentence. I'm not sure where you got the idea that I was challenging your whole comment, when mine referred exclusively to the price of USPS services.
mkaziz··on Why don’t college students vote absentee? (Hint: Stamps)
I was responding to your statement: "Think of them as a private business when it comes to financials." A private business would be able to set the cost of its services.
mkaziz··on Why don’t college students vote absentee? (Hint: Stamps)
Not true, since Congress can limit how much a stamp costs.

Edit: Apparently there is a commission set up. It's part of the executive branch, but still, the USPS can't up and decide the price of a stamp: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Postal_Regulatory_Commission

mkaziz··on Ten years after the crisis, the contagion has spread to democracy itself
Also the birth rate of the source population (Syria) is 2.5x. Germany is 1.5x. It's not really that far apart. Between that and the drop in the birth rate after the first generation, and the conversion out of Islam that will start happening as later generations assimilate and intermarry with locals, I doubt if there will be a substantial change in the Muslim population over the long term.
mkaziz··on Ten years after the crisis, the contagion has spread to democracy itself
The rate is high enough that in two generations they'll go from 5% to 51%?
mkaziz··on Can Mark Zuckerberg Fix Facebook Before It Breaks Democracy?
The rich also don't want to pay taxes. I think they're okay with that outcome.
mkaziz··on Firefox 62.0 Released
Whoa I am trying this now and it looks amazing!!
mkaziz··on Apple becomes the first $1T company
I wish I'd bought Apple stock in December instead of Bitcoin.
mkaziz··on How LeBron James' new public school is the first of its kind
So if I want my kids to be surrounded by other, smart(er) kids / kids with engaged parents, I should send them to charter schools?
mkaziz··on AI at Google: our principles

Here's your definition of a "combatant".

mkaziz··on Dumber phone
I would def feel more comfortable paying for it and having an ironclad guarantee you wouldn't use my data to stay solvent / pay for bankruptcy down the line.
mkaziz··on Dumber phone
I love the idea but it needs way too many permissions. How do you guys make money?
mkaziz··on I realized my brain belongs to my phone
I would do this in a heartbeat, except having Maps and needing to look up a quick phone number / look for a place's opening hours while out and about is hard to give up. :(
