Yup, they finally did it. Same thing they did to FB to get me to leave is now leading me to leave one of the apps I really loved to use when it first came out.

Apparently you and I are outside the market. This is exactly what I used Instagram, Facebook (when I was on it) and Twitter for. Only Twitter remains. There was a brief period (around 2005-2008 I think) where the majority of the people I knew IRL (incl. family) were online talking to each other, showing each other what they were doing, no political discussions, no fighting, it was a flash in the pan in the end. I don't think we can ever go back to that as there was no money in it.

FB took care of that by removing the chronological time line. As soon as it went away from a time line of things that happened to the people I love into a addiction stimulating ever refreshing list of flashing images it took away the interactivity. It became more of a consumption site place and they're leaning heavily into that (with Instagram too). This then means that content creation is moving from users you know to professionals (people playing the algorithm).

And this is was what people warned us about when FB became the new single destination. It became its own walled off version of the web.

Tools like this only emphasize my point I think. I've resorted to writing my own diagram (also in svg) and docs generator for our apps and those things are fun to write, but I can't help but feel like this was all better taken care of back in the early 2000s with SQL Server Enterprise Manager.

Oh, I can write massively complex queries with the best of 'em, but I like visualizing the connections seeing it all out in front of me helps me. And it's not often I need this, just the few times I do it really strikes me as odd that the tools we had for this were better all those years ago. Also, it can really help explain things to new devs.

Your PoV reminds me a bit of the old GUI vs CLI flame wars :) both have merit, it's not a zero-sum game.

This is just really a time suck for me. It's not my primary task, all I want is the DB to be better at its job so it lets me be better at mine. In companies without DBAs these tools are very useful.

For most things I use Navicat, for more complex stuff I use DBeaver. But what I've really wanted is what Microsoft had over 20 years ago:

- a visual database diagram

- a visual query builder

- their Index Tuning Wizard

They had these things in the nineties and I've not seen something that comes close since (they've even made it worse for their own stuff). All the alternatives are janky java approximations that have terrible auto formatting options or keep to the very basics SQL.

I have the exact opposite wish most of the time, in Safari for instance, it's almost impossible to go to https://example.com/blog when you've previously gone to https://example.com/blog/2022/01/01/my-article.html. In FF I like how it autocompletes with letter + right-arrow + letter + right-arrow. This way I can quickly go to different subreddits by just typeing r -> r -> f -> n for reddit.com/r/formula1/new and other subreddits using other first letters.

Logs after DDoS attacks can do that.

Hah, I had this setup: Palm V, Nokia 7110, Rio PMP300. Also reading news (and books) on my commute. 1998 - 2000 was a fun era in tech.

I'm facing this right now, but I enjoy coding so much more. It's a hard choice, but I'm leaning towards going back to coding full time. Worse career choice, but better for my sanity, I think.
