mjfl··on A history of Ireland in 100 goodbyes
Any chance that Irish writing could be re-phoneticized? I tried learning Irish for fun but it was tough because all the letters sounded in a really unexpected way. (I also think that English should be re-phoneticized for what it's worth)
mjfl··on Pythagorean Theorem found on clay tablet 1k years older than Pythagoras (2009)
did they know about the Pythagorean theorem, or did they know about the square root of two? It seems that people did puzzle over this quantity for a while.
mjfl··on Michael F. Flynn has died
Michael Flynn is an extremely common Irish American name.
mjfl··on Nobel Prize in Physics Awarded to Agostini, Krausz, and L’Huillier
seems absurd. AMO is the only opportunity to study high energy physics where you're not a cog in a giant machine.
mjfl··on Lean, Coq and other proof assistants: Visualising proofs as trees
What is it with proof assistant designers and terrible naming instincts? "Lean" as a name collides with all sorts of business/engineering productivity frameworks "Lean software development", "lean business management", "running a lean startup". And of course Coq is phallic both in English and the original French. It must be the case that the people that design these things live in a separate plane of existence where these things don't bother them.
mjfl··on enron :: discover the power of WHY (2001)

mjfl··on 'Empty shelves with no books': School Library Discards pre-2008 books
Convinced that people who do this actually don't know how to read very well, hate reading, and hate books. They see books as intimidating and scary. These extremely low functioning people tend to be overrepresented in public teachers and schoolboards, surprisingly. If, therefore, some of the books are EVIL, all the more convenient for them to get rid of these unpleasant objects.
mjfl··on Gun deaths among US kids continue to rise; Southern states have worst rates
north eastern gun owning states such as Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine are doing just fine. We see Louisiana, Mississippi, and Washington DC as deep purple on this map. Everyone knows what this chart is measuring.
mjfl··on BMW: Gasoline Car Ban Poses “Imminent Risk” to European Automakers
the fact is that any 'good' coming from being alive cannot make up for the 'evil' that it costs if one is arbitrarily strict - the pain and injustice of cows dying to make food, the environment disturbed to ensure sufficient square footage of crop growth, the carbon emissions required to maintain a population above a certain level. In order to stay alive, in the face of an arbitrarily strict moralist, one must defiantly and violently insist on living. Don't do better, do worse.
mjfl··on BMW: Gasoline Car Ban Poses “Imminent Risk” to European Automakers
I honestly have a deep respect for Europeans for the depth of their commitment to what they believe is right, which is so deep that they are essentially willing to commit suicide in order to remain relatively blameless in the climate change situation that will proceed forward regardless.
mjfl··on Equation Group Tools
since these things seem to target individual applications - is this an argument that security through obscurity i.e. writing your own (shitty) servers and such has a security benefit?
mjfl··on Putin’s Forever War
They are picking who will be the prime minister and who will not be the deputy prime minister - Klitschko
mjfl··on Putin’s Forever War
We have a phone call recording of Victoria Nuland picking the president of Ukraine.
mjfl··on Putin’s Forever War
there are really no comments here yet. Was this automated?
mjfl··on What is narcissism? Science confronts a widely misunderstood phenomenon
Well I'm sorry that happened to you. You certainly shouldn't be with someone who constantly makes you miserable, regardless of 'psychology'. And I'm hoping the relationship ended before marriage, for sure.
mjfl··on What is narcissism? Science confronts a widely misunderstood phenomenon
> I dated someone I believe has NPD, and it was an abusive and traumatic relationship. I have had family members who definitely had NPD, and they were abusive to their children. I've both been & seen people profoundly hurt by this (the NPD sufferers included).

So you've done the diagnosis yourself, outside of a psychiatric clinic? See this is exactly what I'm talking about. You have observations coming from these completely biased sources, making pretty heavy conclusions about someone's brain, and when you look at the solutions to how to deal with these people it's super severe - like completely cut them out of your life, treat them like a dangerous animal. It should be completely obvious to everyone why this is a bad way of thinking and doing things.

mjfl··on What is narcissism? Science confronts a widely misunderstood phenomenon
I love people pretending that psychology/psychiatry is a scientific field instead of a wasteland of fraud/studies that don't replicate. Everyone has their own psychological disability like an astrological sign and it is completely "backed up" by "research" ha ha. Go tell us all how your ex is a narcissist and your boss is a psychopath - never heard it before hahaha.
mjfl··on Genome of the Tyrolean Iceman reveals unusually high Anatolian farmer ancestry
I just see them as pale skinned people with black hair. It's a characteristic look you see.
mjfl··on Northvolt raises $1.2B convertible note from BlackRock
I noticed they don’t mention Tesla but they lift the term gigafactory
mjfl··on Genome of the Tyrolean Iceman reveals unusually high Anatolian farmer ancestry
You’ve seen people get less fat in the past 50 years?
mjfl··on Genome of the Tyrolean Iceman reveals unusually high Anatolian farmer ancestry
Paler than me. and I am of Irish/French ancestry. Though my French side is very 'Med'. Sardinians are paler than other Mediterranean people.
mjfl··on Genome of the Tyrolean Iceman reveals unusually high Anatolian farmer ancestry
aren't Sardinians quite pale?
mjfl··on Who’s Afraid of Lorne Michaels?
To make it clear to those unfamiliar, Seth Simons initiated the 'cancellation' of Shane Gillis and can be seen, for that reason, as a major agitator for 'cancel culture'.
mjfl··on Iraq Blocks Telegram, Leaks Blackhole BGP Routes
I wonder if it’s the pro-west faction or the pro-Iran faction doing this. I could see it going both ways…
mjfl··on Why did people in the past look so much older?
Our androgens so low bros :( It's like being Bobby Hill and thinking you'll grow into Hank Hill but just staying Bobby forever because of phthalates in the water and sugar in the food.
mjfl··on Significant slice of the U.S. workforce believes their jobs have no purpose
Does this line of thinking mean that companies should be firing more people?
mjfl··on Solving a simple puzzle using SymPy
Simple guess assuming that the answer is an integer: We have 5 copies of equal area with area = 3w, where w is the width of the first box. That means the whole square has area 15w. If the answer is an integer then it means 15w is a perfect square, which requires w = 15u^2 for some integer u. Guessing u = 1, the answer may be 15^2 = 225.
mjfl··on Wendelstein 7-X: Gigajoule energy turnover generated for eight minutes
true. but on the other hand, the 'theoretical' is being turned into practice as evidenced by this 8 minute containment. the best a tokamak can do is half a second.
mjfl··on Wendelstein 7-X: Gigajoule energy turnover generated for eight minutes
The Stellarator is theoretically a superior design over the Tokamak, designed to neutralize the JxB force, where J is the current through the plasma and B is the magnetic field guiding the plasma around the device. By twisting the plasma into a shape where the curl of B (proportional to J) is parallel to B, i.e. a helix, the cross product is 0, and thus there are no net magnetohydrodynamic forces on the plasma.
mjfl··on Source code for Quake 2 rerelease
Why do people like Quake so much? I'm too young to understand. Does it do something unique compared to other shooter games?
