mjdwitt··on Why Ubuntu Linux is now ready for primetime
I'll second that. Although you can get a similar simplicity in many other distros, however, what really makes Arch great for me is the community; they have one of the best wikis I have ever seen.
mjdwitt··on My Standing Desk Experiment
How many hours do you typically spend standing per day?

I know exactly what you mean about time spent on admin tasks in Gentoo; I myself experienced the same when I switched my personal dev machine from Gentoo to ArchLinux. I still wouldn't blame Gentoo for the kernel issues, however.

It seems to me that Dobb's predecessor failed to understand what he was doing and therefore failed as an admin. If Gentoo required a level of understanding which he did not have, then he should not have been using Gentoo. That is exactly the reason I switched; I realized that I needed to spend time with other distributions learning more basic elements of Linux systems before I would be capable of adeptly administering a Gentoo system. In the hands of those more experienced, however, distributions such as Gentoo (or Slackware) are powerful tools.

mjdwitt··on US Mil Unix Distro
Did loading this page take 30+ seconds for anyone else?

Other than the insane load times, this is a pretty interesting sounding project. It's like a manually maintained version of Qubes' (http://qubes-os.org) application domains, except with only one domain at a time and you have to reboot whenever you want to switch between them.

It seems to me that your kernel issues are more related to your predecessor's failures as an admin than to Gentoo. Nothing you can do on Gentoo can't be done on most distributions, including poorly-done kernel upgrades.
mjdwitt··on 33GB of public domain JSTOR articles, and a manifesto
Raped on a daily basis? Really?

Your opinion would have more weight if you left out the histrionics.

mjdwitt··on Telex.cc: a new ISP-based anti-censorship network
While the name seems like a poor choice given all of the previous technology like telegraphic exchanges, this research project looks interesting. Capable of transferring HD flash video through real-world firewalls in place in China, it looks like a promising alternative to proxy servers and Tor networks. Its reliance on the benevolence of a centralized ISP, however, is a pretty obvious weakness.
mjdwitt··on Why Only One in Four Teens is Employed
While I agree with you, I don't believe that the current culture of college admissions agrees. In my (anecdotal) experience, most universities in the US value the kid who volunteered at all the politically correct places, took all the right AP classes and passed their corresponding exams, played varsity high-school sports, and knows how to write formulaic essays with minimal effort.

Also, any money that a teenager earns before college only raises the amount that the teen is expected to contribute to their college expenses, effectively lowering their financial aid.

I'm a little confused about what you're suggesting here. Examples, perhaps?
mjdwitt··on Does the Internets know my password?
This is definitely paranoia-inducing. It had a record of one of my addresses from December 2010.
mjdwitt··on Tell HN: Setting up a live-in hacker house
It's too bad the site doesn't seem to have seen any love in a while. Last update to the main page there was over a year ago and a few of the external links seem to be broken.
mjdwitt··on Tell HN: Setting up a live-in hacker house
Awesome! Here's to hoping it will all be positive news.
mjdwitt··on Tell HN: Setting up a live-in hacker house
If you end up finding enough interest, it would be awesome to know how this works out. Any chance you will write about this more in the future?

Also, this is when I wish that I was in the bay area instead of Middle-of-Nowhere, Midwest.

mjdwitt··on We need a programming language for the rest of us
Indeed. The way that the conclusion was worded would (if I did not know better) have had me believing that C was a relatively new language rather that the common precursor to most modern languages.
mjdwitt··on Show HN: My first site made purely to sell stuff. Would love feedback.
I'm no graphic designer, but the blank space above the third column in the grid of comics is really distracting until I scroll it off the top of the screen. That aside, I really like the strong grid.
mjdwitt··on The investment that didn't happen
But as a search engine for browsing/research prior to purchasing, it works great. Back when Modista was still operational, I myself bought three or four pairs of shoes that were either discovered or inspired by discoveries made while browsing their site. Each one of those purchases was made after looking into the brand that manufactured them, but–with the exception of one purchase–I had never heard of the brand before that and never would have without Modista or some inferior means of searching through such a massive inventory.
mjdwitt··on Show HN: Review our Landing Page
I'm seeing what I'm pretty sure is an error when I view your page: http://imgur.com/TkFNr. Just thought you might like the heads up.

I'm running Chromium 10.0.648, btw.
