mittensc··on US sanctions force The Netherlands off Microsoft and toward alternative NixOS
Reality: US is impotent against iran closing the straight
mittensc··on Mysterious 'UFO' spotted on SpaceX livestream
It looks like exhaust /gas and suggested as such in the article...

> Dean Scott chimed in, suggesting the streak was gas left behind by the Super Heavy booster as its engines shut down after separation and fired again for the return burn.

So why setup and share a clickbait article?

mittensc··on US sanctions force The Netherlands off Microsoft and toward alternative NixOS
"the US could have won but have chosen to lose"
mittensc··on US sanctions force The Netherlands off Microsoft and toward alternative NixOS
That's a lot of winning... having to introduce a draft...

How well do you think a draft is going to go? forced on an armed populace that might not want to die in iran?

mittensc··on US sanctions force The Netherlands off Microsoft and toward alternative NixOS
So power projection isn't working out as planned.

Could doesn't reopen hormuz.

mittensc··on US sanctions force The Netherlands off Microsoft and toward alternative NixOS
Right now the US looks impotent vs Iran.
mittensc··on US sanctions force The Netherlands off Microsoft and toward alternative NixOS
How's that power projection working in Iran/Yemen?

Would NATO change the equation?

mittensc··on US sanctions force The Netherlands off Microsoft and toward alternative NixOS
Maybe that's wrong?

The US can't even win a war in the middle east without NATO

What is the US going to do when China starts making their own moves?

mittensc··on Updated Google Maps shows destruction of the city of Rafah
Imagine this was Jerusalem and someone made a similar comment.

What would you respond?

mittensc··on Updated Google Maps shows destruction of the city of Rafah
Imagine this was Jerusalem

would you say the same?

mittensc··on Netherlands bracing for potentially devastating US sanctions against the ICC
Counter point: ICC enforces laws within its members territories.

Don't like it, don't do genocide or dont visit its member countries.

mittensc··on Lawsuit says Anthropic, OpenAI and others made illegal agreement on AI slowdown
> Although, if they do succeed in regulating themselves, won't that do more damage to their aggressive funding requirements? It will guarantee the delay (and possible banning) of the promised AGI that justifies the valuations.

If their statement is to be believed and they truly slow down, that means they are afraid of something. Otherwise some of them would just betray the rest.

If that is the case, then... why? what are they afraid of?

I would wager that failure, having their companies go bankrupt might be it.

How that would happen, I have no clue... I would assume interest rates raised because we're out of options dealing with inflation would hit their ability to raise money and once that happens they're in trouble...

mittensc··on Lawsuit says Anthropic, OpenAI and others made illegal agreement on AI slowdown
I'm always curious why.

"we're going to slow down AI" - why?

"we care about the masses and ..." - why? why now? what changed?

I'm a bit afraid that the actual reasons are economic, they may be realizing the hole they've dug themselves in with their massive investments with a recession that seems to be brought on by their tech....

mittensc··on Due to DMA, Siri AI delayed in EU for iOS 27 and iPadOS 27
Good. Apple would be forced to give competitors the same access they give Siri.

Aparently that means: "give any AI system nearly unlimited access to a user’s device, as well as the ability to act on that access autonomously without a user’s ongoing visibility and control. That includes the ability to read and send messages, make purchases, access files, and execute actions across any app. Security researchers have already shown that AI systems can be hijacked to steal personal data — like passwords and photos — and to permanently alter files and account settings without a user’s consent. "

So... Siri can already do all that... how come Apple isn't concerned about that?

Perhaps a better approach is to allow users to control what AI agents can do including Siri and give all the same access through the same controls.

mittensc··on More questions about whether researchers can trust OpenAI with unpublished math
well then fingers crossed someone does that
mittensc··on More questions about whether researchers can trust OpenAI with unpublished math
Imagine OpenAI Astra model weights were made public because the datacenter they use had T&C that allows them to make them public

Would that be ok in your mind?

Same as someone going and taking all of the researchers papers and publishing under their own name. (which openAI did)

Nobody would care if they provided published research that author made public same as a google search would offer that.

mittensc··on Ask HN: Resources to get good at soldering?
just use a computer fan next to whatever you are soldering, easy 5-10$

why breathe in the fumes or have them get into your eyes?

mittensc··on AI is making back-office work extinct
It was cheaper then trying to automate.
mittensc··on Stripe said to abandon $50B pursuit of PayPal
do it on the website then?

or dont do anything and direct debit by default doesnt work

mittensc··on Internet centralization and the original sin of NAT
> Not sure. In any case, the phone seems to do fine.

That's mostly because a phone is very locked down, can you run an accessible ftp server on your phone?

It's also not windows

mittensc··on Internet centralization and the original sin of NAT
I remember times before NAT and SSL

You could share things easily, sure, but anyone could get hacked pretty easily and very targetted.

After NAT, sharing was still easy lots of 'piracy' apps, various messengers with NAT passthrough

Both before and after you needed to be technical, you can't ask someone that doesnt know about computers to set up an FTP server, and if they did it would be a nightmare and they'd likely share their whole drive

Same goes for anything else.

Anyway, we'll get the whole non-nat with IPv6, let's see what that brings

mittensc··on Stripe said to abandon $50B pursuit of PayPal
there are notifications and approvals in bank apps now, they can't take the money until you accept there too and you can revoke from there as well
mittensc··on Stripe said to abandon $50B pursuit of PayPal
I get notified of all SEPA direct debit requests and need to approve them, only for recurring payments.

Perhaps other banks don't do this and that is the problem.

mittensc··on Stripe said to abandon $50B pursuit of PayPal
> The IBAN is also used for paying online by debit note

How does that even work?

mittensc··on Stripe said to abandon $50B pursuit of PayPal
> Claude told me that PayPal may still be universal way of sending a "gift amounts

Meanwhile in china you just scan a qr code.

In europe you just send money to their IBAN or they send you a link

Instant payments, no commission...

mittensc··on Canada will match US tariffs 'dollar for dollar' as trade talks break down
You make outrageously wrong claims with no intention of debate, I'm returning your profound deference in kind.

Skimming through your comments, your only goal is to demonize DSA because they go against your views with respect to Israel.

It doesn't matter to you if what you're saying is true or not, you are not looking for a debate.

mittensc··on Canada will match US tariffs 'dollar for dollar' as trade talks break down
nobody wants to replace capitalism, you're being absurd
mittensc··on Canada will match US tariffs 'dollar for dollar' as trade talks break down
Social Democracy and Democratic Socialism are the same thing
mittensc··on Canada will match US tariffs 'dollar for dollar' as trade talks break down
Who exactly imposed those tarriffs?
mittensc··on Canada will match US tariffs 'dollar for dollar' as trade talks break down
So what's wrong with that phrase?

Norway collectively owns its 'key economic drivers'.

Is that a bad thing?, they're still capitalistic, just with better respect for its people.

You probably collectively own things via the stock market too.
