mitjak··on How (not) to sell your iOS app
It's definitely not just you. As a customer, I get quite annoyed when a screenshot tries to explain how the game works, as it becomes confusing which parts of the graphic are the game itself and which are not.
mitjak··on Sam Odio: I Left Facebook to Rejoin Y Combinator With a New Start-up
I suck at stats but isn't the expected value of Math.random E=0.5? Which makes the result Ex11x2 = 11?

EDIT: I do suck. The expected value of Math.random*11 is 5.5, which floors to 5. Thus the total is 10.

mitjak··on Spotify Finally Coming to U.S. in July
Indeed. You seem to assume that the music library is somehow static which isn't the reality for a lot of users of Spotify and other streaming services. There are at least a dozen albums released and reissued every day, and some people (like me) enjoy checking out new music on a daily basis.

It is simply not viable to keep buying all those albums and store them in a library, particularly if you won't listen to them ever again after the first listen. While an edge case, the shades of gray in the middle still demand a constantly changing library. Thus, Spotify and Grooveshark, whose catalogue I personally like a lot more, are much better choices than the 'online library' services.

mitjak··on How we got the unusual symbol used for the Mac menu command key
That, and it got tiring to explain to customers to "press Command+C to copy" only to hear back "Command? Oh, the Apple key?"
mitjak··on Why we are unlikely to ever leave the solar system.
>I for one would be very impressed if we could make a fully self replicating colony & factory in the next 90 years.

He/she never claimed we will. The claim was that we the entire human knowledge will fit on a mobile device.

mitjak··on Google: Les Pauls 96th birthday
You are. Only one though.
mitjak··on Under the hood, Groupon is declining in Boston
Definitely. One can only stand so many spa and skin treatment discounts per week. Then again, I wouldn't imagine hackers to be the main target group for the majority of groupons.
mitjak··on Apple to unveil iCloud Monday, June 6
I hate it as well but it's easy to see you're right as customers themselves go ahead and add the missing "i" in front of products. How many times have you heard people say "iTouch" instead of "iPod Touch" and "iTV" instead of "Apple TV"?
mitjak··on Cool, but obscure Unix tools
Why?
mitjak··on Bye Bye Skype, Top 3 Free Replacements
Perhaps you're not popular enough on Facebook?

But more seriously, me and most of my contacts have switched to Google Talk as the Windows Live client is very bloated these days and GTalk generally connects faster and is always there as part of Gmail when you log in on any platform on any computer (eg friend's computer, library etc).

mitjak··on Bye Bye Skype, Top 3 Free Replacements
I wonder what would happen if Microsoft open sourced the protocol and parts of the client.
mitjak··on Beats Drum Machine
> Notepad is cool but only a toy. Check out Eclipse for a very advanced IDE.

Apples to oranges?

mitjak··on SLR Camera Simulator
>well, ISO + TIME + APERTURE are ingredients of EXPOSURE, and that should be all you need to know to start shooting. you know this and you can grab the newest high-end dslr or your grandpa's 35mm oldie and know what you're doing. the rest is just geekery.

Perhaps I misunderstood your point but that doesn't sound right. Iso does not control exposure: in case of film it is the sensitivity of a particular stock, and in case of sensors it's basically analog gain. Since to use a different ISO in a film camera you'd need to use a different roll or sheet of film, you can't vary ISO on a "grandpa's camera" very easily unlike with a digital camera.

mitjak··on Colourlovers Raises $1 Million To Make Everyone An Artist
> (if you’re interested they’re targeting hires in Portland — Monsef describes the hiring market in San Francisco as “pretty nutty”...

A bit unrelated but does anybody else feel frustrated when a closing bracket is omitted in an article? Perhaps it is too much lisp exposure but I always keep scanning the text for that closing braket looking to find the end of the "scope" of the bracketed sentence.

mitjak··on Wikileaks Founder: Facebook is the most appalling spy machine ever invented
Laughter? Was this supposed to be a joke?
mitjak··on One year after iPad: Is Adobe Flash still relevant?
That was a very long-winded way of saying "I don't really know. What do you think?"
mitjak··on My Experience as a Female CS Major
It's infomercial o'clock.
mitjak··on Bose founder makes big stock donation to MIT
>Headphones: Sony MDR7506. The end.

Definitely. I've recommended them on HN before. They're the best 'pro' headphones at a very fair price that the companies making overpriced 'amateur professional' products don't want you to know about, including Sony themselves.

mitjak··on Top Dying Industries, and lessons for your startup
Absolutely. There are all sorts of folks looking for clothes made locally and well. I buy American Apparel for both of those reasons.
mitjak··on Barnes & Noble treats Nook Color to Froyo; unveils Nook Apps
This is the average font size of the PDFs I read: http://www.inf.fu-berlin.de/lehre/WS03/alpi/lambda.pdf

Would something like that read fine? Apologies for a pile of questions: Nook Color isn't available here in Canada, and I was thinking of taking a bus trip to Buffalo to grab one of these if the Nook is worth it.

Do you find the screen and its resolution to be large enough for reading non-eBook formatted books (PDFs, primarily)?
mitjak··on Ask PG: How has voting habit/volume changed since being hidden?
Because it's nice to be able to quickly find out what the name is once I do.
mitjak··on Ask PG: How has voting habit/volume changed since being hidden?
I'm going to vote against this: I personally never look at names anyway. Eyes jump between comments themselves, and only if a person is marked as a friend do I lift my eyes up in a "oh yeah, it's you again" tilt.
mitjak··on Ask PG: have you seen a change in the cumulative comment karma?
Replies to comments solve the "I want to know what others think" problem. I agree with the previous commenter: having the comment ratings hidden was unusual at first but I definitely do acknowledge that I used to mentally pre-judge a comment based purely on others' responses to it, despite having dealt multiple times with comments that I disagreed with which had higher upvote counts than the ones I felt were better answers.
mitjak··on Show HN: My weekend project, tracking the services you can't have in Canada
Indeed.
mitjak··on Show HN: My weekend project, tracking the services you can't have in Canada
But you can easily get it by setting up a US iTunes account which is slightly tricky but doable without a US credit or gift card.

mitjak··on How to damage your brand in one smooth shot - Way to GoDaddy
Maybe not technically, but the African Bush Elephant going down from 300,000 in 1970 to 10,000 today is a very significant drop.
mitjak··on How to damage your brand in one smooth shot - Way to GoDaddy
Here is a step-by-step guide on how to transfer the domain away from GoDaddy. It's to a registrar unknown to me but the instructions will work for any registrar, and the guide is new enough to use the current version of GoDaddy's craptastic UI:

Perhaps some of us care more about endangered species than those getting scammed around the world? Just a thought.
