yes I agree very much, and also it is important not to roll over IMHO
mistrial9··on Car is a smartphone on wheels. Here's who's listening
uniformed services and some kinds of professionals already have agreed to terms on conduct and records. The people who agree to that say "of course" when it comes time to subscribe Everyone Else to the same constraints. That is my own thinking, it might cover some proportion of the cases there...

> we can expect more and more of our goods to spy on us

strong disagree, this is complicit and defeatist nonsense given +100 years of active and successful consumer rights protection in lawful markets in the West.

mistrial9··on When oil prices spike, where does the money go?
that is fundamentally self-centered, the way it is put there. Capital is under the control of certain companies and their decisions are binding financially.. it starts there AFAIK. Upon that stable core is built layer upon layer of related business including things you mention. A framing that the business practices are 'on you' wears thin quickly while simultaneously taking up airspace from very difficult business topics

mistrial9··on Backblaze drive stats for Q2 2026
thx for posting this. Personally I am a fan of Western Digital Black Label spinning drives. Say what you will! I have details, and basically they work for me. AFAIK in 2026 and back into 2025, there are very large, new high-spec Western Digital Black Label disks in the catalog.. that I just cannot order. It says "all orders are pre-allocated until further notice" or similar ? Meanwhile, the same disks I bought ten years ago, same size, spec, performance and rating, as also available and I can buy those.. for perhaps twenty percent more than I paid long ago. This is new to me, this situation where an ordinary civilian cannot purchase the large drives, exclusive to "select customers" with opaque wording and no end in sight. The happy escalator of increasing spec and similar consumer prices, has ended.

Why am I reading the very newest Backblaze drive report -- they fired the over-forty engineer who started this, apparently.. and I as a consumer, cannot buy the same drives that might be listed there -- have not looked yet. The entire situation is fundementally changed. Info welcome

wonderful -- now take the modern case where the most fertile land, covered with farming, is converted to cement and home sales due to 100x immediate cash returns. The price? pavement is forever

many readers here have not experienced a standard of customer support that was common decades ago. Google in particular created a new standard for ignoring the customer on a large scale, in my own experiences. Secondly, the customer paid money to a company for service, while an emergent business form does not take money from the customer directly, blurring the definition of customer.

I strongly agree that failure to stand for consumer rights is both learned helplessness and an apologist cooperator psychology. CA Voter here.

mistrial9··on Humans Are Reading Your ChatGPT Chats, Lawsuit Claims
"you" and "we" are so very over used here. In Enterprise services, there are entire companies who take contracts to do "actual work" and the corporate mothership now has the power of the purse, and martini lunches. Meanwhile, aggressive entrepreneurs hire temp workers and outsource to do digital work under the threat of the lash.

Oh - this is just new markets stabilizing, surely the real world will stabilize back to fair contracts, health care, market rate long-term employment for families, and generally the rule of law?

Take a look at the global fishing industry, one of the oldest industries on Earth, and sharing the feature that the work product a) must constantly be renewed b) the work product is fungible. hint- slavery is real and is outsourced today, by brands that you know and trust at the grocery store.

I agree with the sentiment but you lack context. The SuperFund has been a training ground for stall-and-pad-billing for decades. Certain bureaucrats gained lifetime employment for stall-and-declare skills.

mistrial9··on DHS 'Predictive Policing' Unit Is Analyzing Americans' Financial Habits
I just tried to pay my elderly neighbors cell phone bill here in California. I will spare you the details. Is all of this really required?

It reminds me of a time when credit and credit cards were flying fast. Large losses started appearing on consumer credit accounts by the tens of thousands. A casual look into it indicated that it was the employees and leaders of the sector, who read and understood the credit agreement that put liability ultimately on the company. The actual credit card employees, adjacent accountants, quick witted cons, all siphoning money from credit cards in very large numbers. Why say this? Actual customers with increasing security requirements were largely not at all involved with the growing fraud. It was the participants in the credit industry seizing the opportunity to steal, with relative impunity. Things have changed and changed again since then with scale, local rules, fraud detection systems etc.

The point of the rant is that ordinary people's rights are squeezed, privacy vanishes, routine humiliating document production and security, required because the people in the industry that created those is cheating.

Yes of course there is cheating on taxes over tip money, or no-show jobs for relatives.. but what kind of society is being built with constant oversight into ordinary people's activity ?

cash indeed
