misterparker··on Can you bootstrap a startup on the side?
I really hope you can bootstrap on the side, cuz that's what I'm doing and hoping for success. I am adding some extra probability for failure by tryin to do it 100% by myself. We'll see if i end up outsourcing, contracting or getting a partner, but for now, bootstrapping while being employed is proving to be a possible success for me.
misterparker··on It’s Easy to Fake a Startup but How Far Would You Get?
Been in beta forever, waiting for it to open up, I'd almost rather build my own at this point
misterparker··on Ask HN: Why doesn't your team ship?
Sure. I haven't really concluded if this is a bad thing yet, but compared to previous places, this is what I have observed. And that is that we will bounce around an idea about something that is pretty (seemingly) trivial for longer than I am used to doing. Typically with the small things it has been "not really an issue, do this or that, it wont matter" where here we will communicate over a decision for much longer hashing things out. I think it comes from a good place of wanting to do what is right and make the best choice. And sometimes it feels slow. Now saying this is the wrong way to do things would not be an unbiased opinion since, all I have to compare it to is past employment experience. And my current place, regardless of the time accrued by these decisions, they are still quite successful. So really my observations are inconclusive at best.
misterparker··on Ask HN: Why doesn't your team ship?
As a remote team, communication may be what slows our team down. But on the same token, in-office communication can slow things down too.
misterparker··on You know nothing about code
Definitely terrifying and exhilarating. Thanks for commenting - always fun to hear how other devs start out, sometimes similar, sometimes way different.
misterparker··on You know nothing about code
Great point, it really is taboo, and it's great to have companies that embrace the capacity to admin "I don't know". You seem to understand how to hire effectively.
misterparker··on Google Wallet Card
It's exactly the same. You have to add money from your other cards/accounts to the wallet balance (aka paypal balance) then you spend it from there.

So how long does it take for your google wallet balance to pull money from your other accounts or transfer the funds?

This would be innovative, if you could spend money on it, then choose from which account you want it to be deducted ex post facto, and if you don't choose within 24 hours then it gets deducted from your default account. While this might be cool, google would be assuming a large amount of risk.

misterparker··on The Period Is Pissed
Not always pissed.

Sometimes. just. emphatic.

misterparker··on Ask HN: Who uses Sublime Text in Vintage Mode?
I learned vim-style through vintage style. But then I started spending a lot more time in vim on the servers. I've added custom key bindings to sublime to add to the vim-ishness. (ie } or { to jump to blank lines)
misterparker··on Ansible 1.4 released
Will this allow me to talk with the buggers?
misterparker··on Why I Turned Down $5 Million in VC Funding
Great writeup. I'm so sick of hearing about VC funding, growth-hacking, hock-sticks, and user-acquisition and all in the name of an exit strategy. I hope to see more and more companies take this more bootstrap-ish approach to building sustainable businesses, solving a real problem for real people.
misterparker··on Why I’m an entrepreneur
And given more time, you can easily grow your business to be a 6 figure income. That is not uncommon.

Good work

misterparker··on Ask HN: What music do you listen to when hacking?
Benjamin Briggs makes a lot of good stuff. I'm a bit of a NES nostalgic when coding. My love for coding began in 98 when I built my first website (a Zelda 64 Ocarina of Time fan-site)

http://benjaminbriggs.bandcamp.com/track/this-track-may-snac... (Let me know if you recognize the sound at 2:14 (clue its from an awesome NES game)

https://soundcloud.com/zedd/zedd-legend-of-zelda-original

I also highly recommend OCRemix.org if you too like game tunes.

When not feeling gamey it might be Muse, Ratatat, Kamelot or whatever else feels a good pace to code with.

misterparker··on Ask HN: How much do you think SnapChat is really worth?
when someone rejects the demand, it doesn't mean it's worth more, unless there is someone else willing to offer more. But you're dead on that it's worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it. "worth" is a tricky word. We default to thinking that all things have an intrinsic value, when really nothing does. The value of something is only equal to what someone is willing to do to obtain that something.

People think gold has this intrinsic value, but does not either. It's "natural" value is also soley based upon the demand that is put upon it. The fact that people find it beautiful, and that is a great conductor of electricity, are things that are desired about it. And so the more people that discover the uses of gold, the more demand grows.

If there were no googles, or apples, or yahoos, or any of these huge companies with really deep pockets, then there would be no one to offer $3billion for a company like snapchat, and there would be no way it could ever obtain a "worth" of 3 billion. Because, again - anything is only worth what someone is willing to pay (or do) to obtain it. Even your job.

misterparker··on Ask HN: Would you contribute to a community around reviewing repos on Github?
Useless? Something you would use? Commentary?
misterparker··on Show HN: Visualize your Dropbox Space Usage
I'm sure this was a cool and fun dev project. I've used a program like this before: http://www.derlien.com/ to visualize and edit/delete files.

But for space management have since switched to http://spacieapp.com/

misterparker··on Ask HN: What Should My Little Bro Learn After HTML & CSS?
I went HTML then PHP (hadn't discovered CSS yet in 2004), then MySQL, then back to HTML/CSS. Then Javascript, jQuery, Ruby/Rails, since then.

But I would say rails. Ruby/Rails is way easier than Javascript for new devs I feel like.

misterparker··on Meet Boxed - Costco style delivery without the membership
Feels similar to amazon subscription goods, but just accessible from the phone. Kinda nice idea. Wonder if it will pick up traction.
misterparker··on Sorry, devs, but you’re not a true ‘software person’ just because you code
It was pretty abstract, but I think it's meant to be mostly high level. "looking at the world through the lens of software" from what I got, is just seeing all problems as solvable by software. Not sure how much deeper you can take it, other than just giving a whole bunch of examples of problems to be solved with software.
misterparker··on Cryptography in the Browser
What about a site like Passpack? https://www.passpack.com/en/home/

- Does that mean a site like passpack is only waving its hands at its security, and that its client-side cryptography is irrelevant and basically insecure??

misterparker··on Running a HALO product development team
I don't think I would say asana is complex as far as usability. The interface and shortcuts are all pretty intuitive in my opinion. I do think though that asana's lack of opinion or convention and freedom of how to structure the tasks is what some people may feel is "complex".

It seems like anything that requires a bit of thought or self controlled structure people seem to tag as complexity. In a cyber world where usability and simplicity is defined by a users lack of need to think much as they are using the app, this totally makes sense. But as a user of asana myself, I have found once you get past that "feeling of complexity" - which is just a matter of deciding your own conventions, then asana is a beautifully simple collaborative tool. Flexibility is not complexity, although it may feel like it is because it requires more effort on our own part to establish the workflow.

misterparker··on You are not who you think you are
Great feedback. Thanks for that. The primary point (although possibly poorly communicated so) was meant to help us detach from the things we identify too strongly with. And no not be insulted when those things with which we associate (our art or other things) are criticized. > We are how we make other people feel Is a very bias and really a choice of a perspective more than an absolute truth.
misterparker··on Stop making me sign up
> Try to think like the site operator. They know they don't have anything interesting to offer you ...

Remind me never to sign up for anything you create. It seems you have a hard time getting your head around the fact that many "site operators" try to solve real problems by building services to do so. And I might venture to say they believe their site is even more than just "something interesting to offer" - but something valuable or useful to make your life/work easier or more efficient.

misterparker··on Continue building? or quit?
Great feedback. That's one of my main points of concern, is understanding what it is/does. It's an implementation of stripe that allows you to quickly and easily create a payment form for your stripe account. :)
misterparker··on Continue, pivot or quit?
Really? It's up for me. are you getting an error? screenshot? Anything will help thanks!
misterparker··on Organize your Bacon
Nice little hr app I see. I hope it's everything it's cracked up to be
