misterdata··on How contactless cards are still vulnerable to relay attack
These have existed for a while [1]. I've been using one to make sure that my business and personal cards aren't both charged in public transport

misterdata··on Ask HN: Why are sites now breaking login forms into stages (name then password)?
Microsoft appears to do it as well with Office 365 and Azure (and related services).

They appear to distinguish two types of accounts ('Live ID' type accounts for personal use, and 'Work' accounts) and it is possible for a single e-mail address to refer to both. When I enter my work email, I get to choose between 'use my work account' (which exists in Azure AD) and 'use my personal account' (which some years ago I registered as Live ID), then get the password prompt.

Actually their implementation is a bit annoying, because the password field in some cases is already visible before the choice between personal/work is presented - as soon as you tab out of the username field, you get the choice and you have to type your password afterwards.

misterdata··on The Apple Goes Mushy Part I: OS X's Interface Decline
As people start getting used to computers and digital, virtual concepts (such as scrolling, windowing, buttons), the need for them to reflect tangible, real-world objects diminishes - I think abolishing skeuomorphism is the right way to go.
misterdata··on Mental Models I Find Repeatedly Useful
I'd add Amdahl's Law [1], which is about the relationship between adding resources for executing a task, and the speed-up that delivers.

misterdata··on More awful IoT stuff
Or you implement a HomeKit bridge in software and use that to make non-HomeKit devices available in HomeKit, e.g. using https://github.com/nfarina/homebridge
misterdata··on Unable to open links in Safari, Mail or Messages on iOS 9.3
This appears to be caused by a bug in the Shared Web Credentials Daemon, which shares website credentials between apps and Safari. Once particular data is put in its database, it keeps crashing.

misterdata··on Ask HN: What are you working on and why is it awesome? Please include URL
Warp: http://warp.one

I want this to be the swiss army knife for all your data analysis/grunt work. Key features are (1) work on small data set then repeat operation on the full dataset so you can work faster, (2) query by doing what you would do in Excel and (3) make loading and moving data super easy and fun to do!

misterdata··on The Linux Security Circus: On GUI Isolation (2011)
This is actually how it is implemented in OSX. If a sandboxed app shows a 'file open' panel then it automatically obtains the rights to read and write to any file selected (the open panel, or 'powerbox' as it is called, is implemented in a separate process so cannot be manipulated by the app). An app can also request a secure 'bookmark' to this file so it can persist file references.
misterdata··on Previously Downloaded OS X Installers No Longer Work
Just yesterday I performed a clean install of Windows 10 on my desktop work computer. After joining our domain (configured in the most standard way possible), the start menu stopped working and edge couldn't start anymore. All commands to fix this situation (through powershell) gave cryptic hexadecimal error codes. After a few hours it turns out the Windows Firewall service was disabled. How this causes the Start Menu to malfunction, I don't know...

Again this was a clean installation. Windows 10 is a joke.

misterdata··on 5700 upvotes later: be careful about crypto advice from Reddit
> Reddit only reports timestamps to the month on articles this old, but all the replies I mention above say "3 months ago".

Hold your mouse over the '3 months ago' and it shows the exact timestamp in a tooltip.

So, how should the 'locked boxes' analogy be fixed?
misterdata··on How Hamming codes work
The same idea can be applied to a two-dimensional grid of bits: http://datagenetics.com/blog/december12014/index.html
misterdata··on Some OS X Applications Vulnerable to MITM Attacks
Also: VLC, uTorrent, BitTorrent Sync, XQuartz, Sequel Pro, CotEditor (at least the versions installed on my Mac, should be the most recent)
misterdata··on Migrating ifs to guards in Swift
Also, the code inside the else{} block is required to leave the current scope (e.g. return from the method, fatalError(), assert(false), etc.). In that way, 'x' will always contain a valid value after the guard statement, or statements after the guard statements will not execute.
misterdata··on DataGrip 1.0 (formerly 0xDBE): A New IDE for DBs and SQL
On Mac, you may want to try Warp (http://warp.one). It allows for quick drag-and-drop data importing and exporting across different file and database types. It abstracts the underlying storage away, and will automatically push down queries to the database as much as possible.
misterdata··on What Satoshi Did
The number of leading zeroes as read in binary notation, that is.
misterdata··on A guide to Linux signals
Yes, and using the 'nohup' utility you can effectively block the delivery of SIGHUP to a particular process, to ensure it does not terminate when you close your SSH connection.
misterdata··on OS X 10.11 buffer overflow with deep filesystem hierarchy
So I assume this means the other BSDs (e.g. FreeBSD) exhibit the same bug?
misterdata··on Ask HN: Why is Mac OS X/iOS not called a flavor of Unix?
OS X is built around the XNU kernel. XNU stands for "X is Not UNIX" so that's a clue :-)
misterdata··on Apple Unveils the iPad Pro
He said this at the iPhone unveiling. For an iPad, a stylus makes a lot more sense imo.

misterdata··on Randexp.js: Create random strings that match a given regular expression
Warp [1] implements this, and also allows you to generate a list of all possible values matching a particular regex (the number of possibilities of course grows quite quickly for many regexes!).

misterdata··on Ask HN: What are the biggest problems with spreadsheets?
Use Excel's tables feature, and it will more or less force a column to contain the same formula for each row (or a numeric value). In these formulas you can refer to other cells in a row by column name.

misterdata··on Ask HN: What do you use to manage your TODOs?
Both at work and personally, I use Trello (http://trello.com). Like it because it is really simple, its layout forces you to keep your lists short, and collaboration is extremely easy.
misterdata··on Mitro is Shutting Down on August 31st
I only had a brief look at the source code (it's over at Github) but it seems one could easily run their own server?
misterdata··on Snow – A layer 3 virtual network that uses public keys instead of IP addresses
Interesting, and similar to Telehash [1]. Main benefit over Telehash seems to be that it can 'just work' with existing applications.

misterdata··on MacOS is the new Windows
I have almost the same hardware as you and experience none of the problems. Also I hear that the latest iOS/OS X betas actually make things smoother for many people rather than slower.
misterdata··on Swift gems for creating reliable, concurrent OS X desktop apps
This only works right if none of the frameworks you use log anything by themselves - messages will get garbled otherwise. Logging through the main queue exhibits the same issue, but at least Cocoa logging (which is always in the main thread) is dealt with.
misterdata··on Ask HN: How can I trust a site's .asc key to not be compromised?
Agreed, depending on how paranoid you are. The server serving the .asc file over SSL could still be compromised (among other things). Similarly you are unable ascertain that recipient's private key isn't compromised either, or recipient is forced to decrypt, et cetera.
misterdata··on Pipelining – A Successful Data Processing Model
In fact, pipelining is supported in a lot of systems already. RethinkDB (http://rethinkdb.com) is built around a query language of chained data operations. Warp (OS X tool) provides a user interface for pipelining and executes its queries on regular SQL databases (https://pixelspark.nl/2015/warp-a-query-by-example-analysis-...)
