misterdata··on Scratch is a big deal
At work we built a BI tool around Scratch (Blockly) back in 2013. It’s still seeing daily use: https://www.dialogic.nl/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/demo1.gif
misterdata··on Brain.js: GPU Accelerated Neural Networks in JavaScript
It will work with software implementations (e.g. llvmpipe/lavapipe is used in CI). That will be slower though. However you’d be surprised at how many devices have a usable GPU. Not all have NVIDIA RTX’es of course, but a simple iGPU will do. I tested it on a fairly low specced Dell office PC with an Intel Iris iGPU and that works just fine. Also most mobile devices will have a GPU these days.
misterdata··on Brain.js: GPU Accelerated Neural Networks in JavaScript
See also https://github.com/webonnx/wonnx, which runs ONNX models through WebGPU. It is written in Rust and can be used natively on Windows, macOS and Linux (through wgpu which uses either DX12, Vulkan or Metal) or on the web (it has a JS API that uses WASM under the hood, which calls into the browser’s WebGPU API). There is a Python module as well.

The alternative is actually possible and works reasonably well from the browser: https://github.com/coder/code-server
misterdata··on Typosquatting Attack on ‘Requests’ Python package
Meanwhile, Rust beginners are told to use a highly popular crate called 'reqwest'...
misterdata··on WebGPU – All of the cores, none of the canvas
Already on it! https://github.com/webonnx/wonnx - runs ONNX neural networks on top of WebGPU (in the browser, or using wgpu on top of Vulkan/DX12/..)
misterdata··on Gollum – A simple, Git-powered wiki with a sweet API and local frontend
Wiki.js [1] is quite mature and nice as well, supporting bidirectional Git sync, a GraphQL api and search!

misterdata··on Firefox 91
This only shows about:blank in the first windows opened (after starting Edge) but still gives me the "new tab page" with the Microsoft search bar on it for each window and tab opened subsequently (with no way I know of to set this to about:blank...)
misterdata··on Blockly: A JavaScript library for building visual programming editors
At work we built a BI tool around Blockly in 2013. Still in daily use: https://www.dialogic.nl/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/demo1.gif

misterdata··on Show HN: Low-power Kindle-based dashboard
I wrote something like this using reqwest for a Waveshare 7.5inch display. Also includes a dithering step so all that is needed is a web server serving an image. No conditional requests though but should be easy to add. It is fully statically compiled (even uses musl and rustls), runs on a very bare-bones Linux environment on a Raspberry.

misterdata··on BlocklySQL: A new block-based editor for SQL
Correct!
misterdata··on BlocklySQL: A new block-based editor for SQL
Yes, the demo was definitely made using the production system! (Although usually our ‘puzzles’ are quite a bit more complicated than this simple coffee example. Although more often than you expect, simply publishing a small CSV with a bit of filtering is sufficient!)
misterdata··on BlocklySQL: A new block-based editor for SQL
We have been using something like this based on Blockly in production for over seven years now to build dashboards. GIF demo: https://www.dialogic.nl/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/demo1.gif

Our users (researchers) had no problems learning the concepts of querying but didn't want to be bothered learning SQL syntax - hence we built this (also, our system does quite a bit of magic behind the scenes to allow mixing e.g. CSV data with data from a database, and also allows for things not easily done in SQL, e.g. pivot tables, so it's not just SQL).

misterdata··on Strict APIs vs. Forgiving APIs
Only if the stricter one really requires you to use it differently (e.g. because of checked exceptions). If not you will have to guess for each function if it is strict or not, which potentially causes even more trouble if you get it wrong.
misterdata··on Strict APIs vs. Forgiving APIs
Having used both stricter (Rust) and more loose programming languages (JS), I can add that stricter APIs have made me think more about edge cases than the less-strict APIs. In the less-strict languages I often find myself debugging some edge case, whereas in the stricter languages I am more often required to think about edge cases up front (including those that I know will not be relevant, so in some cases this causes more work than necessary!). Still I much prefer the stricter APIs.
misterdata··on Tasmota: Cloud-free open source smart home firmware for ESP8266 devices
This. ESPHome additionally provides a minimal form of "device management" for larger numbers of devices, including OTA updates of firmware. This is an often underestimated aspect of HA; having many devices of different types buried in your home's walls and ceilings will get cumbersome to maintain, update and replace very quickly.
misterdata··on Translating Quake 3 into Rust
Although not automatic, I find Rust's clippy to be very good at suggesting improvements to code that compiles but simply is not written the way it should.
misterdata··on Microsoft’s web-based version of Visual Studio
You can actually spin up your own web-based VSCode using https://github.com/cdr/code-server.
misterdata··on macOS 10.15 Vista
Actually not far from how it works on macOS. Usage of a system "open file" dialog automatically creates a permission for the application to access that file from inside its container.

I have been running Resilio Sync [1] (formerly BitTorrent Sync) for a while now, it also supports an 'encrypted peer' and has support for all the major platforms.

misterdata··on Ex-Mozilla CTO: I was grilled for three hours at US airport by border cops
Pro tip: on newer iPhones with either Face ID or Touch ID, holding the sleep/wake button and the volume down button for some time puts the device in a mode where Touch/Face ID are disabled, the phone is locked, and the device passcode is required to unlock.
