mint5··on Oracle’s 6am layoff emails hit staff amid new wave of cuts
Why single out communist leaders? Seems more related to authoritarian leaders, of which communist leaders were just a small subset.

Heck our current admin can’t do any wrong in their own eyes, every thing is perfect and winning including the morass in the Middle East that was arbitrarily started on whim and resulted in economic chaos. Or the trade war with Canada.

Or Biden, he couldn’t do any wrong in his own eyes and that led to the current situation.

The socialism one seems to be in bad faith, like not even trying to be in line with how socialism would explain it analogously to the others.
mint5··on Eating Fruit Skins
Cherimoya skins regularly consumed cause Parkinson’s like symptoms.

Some fruit skins are okay, others are not.

And some are only okay if home grown or organic bc the skin is otherwise loaded with pesticide residues

mint5··on Stripe said to abandon $50B pursuit of PayPal
Europe isn’t a monolith and some countries are weird about cards. Here’s two examples.

In Germany, cash is strongly preferred or was the last time I was there a few years ago.

In Norway, cash is nigh nonexistent.

Don’t mistake Germany as representative of the median European country when it comes to card transactions.

mint5··on The Sloppification of Peptides
My take on the peptides craze is it’s like random people started injected insulin because they have a hazy idea of it being helpful for something or other based on the word on the street but they aren’t sure about dose and also can’t be sure what they’re injecting is actually insulin or uncontaminated. They also aren’t diabetic.
mint5··on Canada suspends trade negotiations with USA and match tariffs dollar for dollar
Except the USA has its own supply. Vermont would be strongly pro Canadian syrup export tax
mint5··on The Amazon tax
Why do you assume they are all the exact same and not that some are using even cheaper ingredients/components?

There’s really no knowing what contaminating or failed spec made that batch super cheap.

It’s a race to the bottom, corners will be cut.

mint5··on The Amazon tax
I.e you’re saying AWS values hiding data from google more than customer satisfaction.

That doesn’t sound like being customer focused or obsessed at all.

mint5··on Switching to electric stoves can dramatically cut indoor air pollution (2025)
“Whatever the harmful effects on my health are, that is a trade I make consciously”

Technically since it appears the effects are nebulous to you and if consciousness means informed then it seems a conscious decision is not possible

mint5··on USA Today Co., partners with Palantir to analyze audience data
Even with moral issues aside, Palantir is absurdly expensive and seems to be focused on selling buzzwords over actual value and tech. It’s like crack for non-technical big wigs.
mint5··on Month on Vegan Diet Shifts Epigenetic Patterns Assoc with Aging and Inflammation
So much science work and analysis - all likely ruined by poor dietary controls. I skimmed the actual linked paper to see any details about the vegan vs meat rich diets and didn’t see any discussion whatsoever on that crucial part of the whole thing.

I was very curious if they’d kept the protein, fat and carb proportions constant, or what even is the typical meat rich diet. Is it spam and sausage at every meal? Could be from all the paper mentioned.

The paper did say they instructed the two groups to eat the same calories but overall the vegan group stayed the same weight while the meat group average gained kilo. One meat person gained 5kg!!! The meat group clearly did not eat their normal amounts of calories, an assumption the paper seemed to rely on.

mint5··on What went wrong with data lakes? A 15-year reality check
It’s hard to take an article seriously that uses a snowflake ceo maligning Hadoop as evidence of something. (Note, I am already a believer that data lake efforts usually ended badly.)

Regardless of whether their criticism is factual, it’s absurd to use a direct competitors assessment of the competing tech as a credible source!

If you do that in the opening paragraphs of your paper, it’s wrecked all credibility for everything that follows.

mint5··on Glue bonds to nonstick surfaces and wipes clean with ethanol
Yay more sources of weird forever chemicals. And while it’s been a long time since I had ochem, there’s quite a few places this molecule looks like it can break apart.

They should show results from oxidation, thermal stability, accelerated aging tests.

And I’m beyond skeptical anyone would carefully recover this gunk each even once for re-use outside some contrived lab demo.

mint5··on AI Companies Are Trying to Hide a Staggering Amount of Debt
But if their debt goes bad, isn’t that debt the very bonds that make up the other part of those asset allocations?

mint5··on Judge halts Paramount's $111B purchase of Warner Bros. in win for US states
That world model is not in touch with reality.

R&D spend does not correlate with innovation or creativity. It’s surprising what gets counted as R&D in a big company.

Small companies have to have an innovative product in order to compete with the big fish who operate economies of scale.

mint5··on Judge halts Paramount's $111B purchase of Warner Bros. in win for US states
History well supports that large companies do not innovate well, with nearly all collapsing due to stagnation and bureaucracy. A predicted bad outcome does not mean they can avoid it
mint5··on Judge halts Paramount's $111B purchase of Warner Bros. in win for US states
Following that logic, Microsoft and oracle should be putting out a lot of innovative quirky software!

I can’t think of a single example where a super large company gets more willing to take risks when it gets larger. Theres probably a few exceptions but I can’t think of any.

mint5··on Is this the end of the once-mighty GoPro?
So you don’t realize most you tube influencers using dji or insta360 are being paid to use them? That’s the main reason I’ve seen YouTubers switch. The Chinese brands absolutely flood content creators with free gear and support.

mint5··on Private equity bought America's essential services
That is a baffling response, no one suggested corporations have consciousness.

The poster said “I don’t think there’s anything wrong with this” are they a corporation? If they are, apparently they do have consciousness because they say “I think”

And yes some people do in fact try to vote with their dollars. Canadians are doing it plenty right now for an easy example.

That companies’ sole purpose is to maximize shareholder value, usually near term, is basically a toxic social construct and fairly recent. It’s not grounded in anything other than greed.

mint5··on Private equity bought America's essential services
“ In principle, I don't think there's anything wrong with this. All investment expects a ROI over some time horizon”

Huh? Why is there nothing wrong? Yes they wouldn’t make the investment if they didn’t think they had a way to get ROI, but how does that entitle them to one at any cost or make it necessarily moral?

As an extreme example, If I invest to create a company that is clearly exploitive and addictive, nothing is wrong in principle and I’m entitled to my roi?

mint5··on Spain blocks prediction markets Polymarket, Kalshi over lack of gambling licence
Should there be taxes on alcohol and cigarettes? Should there be warnings on them? What about on heroin?
mint5··on Spain blocks prediction markets Polymarket, Kalshi over lack of gambling licence
What predictions? Why is it useful to know what the odds are for Trump to the word “postage stamp” in a specific speech?

Why are the sports odds useful? Word mention market and sports market are the majority of bets after all. Seems like >90% of wagers are useless noise.

Name 7 recent useful ones you actioned based on, one for each day of the last week. I’m very curious what those may be that you use it daily.

When I looked a the site and checked out a few non sport/word wagers, the actual bets were pretty unhelpful because while their summary sounded potentially informative the actual fine print showed that a weirdly constrained timeline of a specific thing was the actual deciding factor, making them useless.

mint5··on West Coast Cities Turn to Vacancy Taxes to Grapple with Housing Crisis
Development and permitting cost (fees plus time) are most certainly a part of the problem.
mint5··on Nobody understands the point of hybrid cars [video]
So hertz can report your car stolen after you return it, landing you in jail?

Renting a car comes with extra worry, even taking that extreme case out of consideration.

You’re driving around a break in magnet, advertising that it contains suitcases.

It comes with highly restricted rules - technically it violates Avis’s rental agreement to pull off onto a dirt median even if you have a flat tire or ever need to drive on a dirt parking lot - strictly anything unpaved like a national park campground site’s parking.

And you’ll reserve one particular car type, who knows what they’ll actually give you. And the tires may be sketchy too (had that)

And they’re be trying ti upsell you all sorts of horrible deals when you reserve and then pick up
