mingyeow··on The 3n+1 conjecture: Terry Tao has some thoughts ...
WOW: His father told the press that at the age of two, during a family gathering, Tao attempted to teach a 5-year-old child mathematics and English. According to Smithsonian Online Magazine, Tao taught himself basic arithmetic by the age of two. When asked by his father how he knew numbers and letters, he said he learned them from Sesame Street.[4] Aside from English, Tao speaks Cantonese, but does not write Chinese.
mingyeow··on Facebook Partners with Stack Overflow
This is awesome. I develop quite a bit on facebook, but turn to SO for most of my needs. The forum is terrible, but it really does not make sense for them to build a new system from scratch.
mingyeow··on How GitHub Works: Hours are Bullshit
I agree that hours are bullshit, but I have always found a morning standup to coordinate goals and objectives to be exceedingly useful. But i often run into opposition by the "free and easy" types. Thoughts?
mingyeow··on Airbnb Competitor Checks IDs: 'We Don't Want to Trade Security for Volume'
they are lucky this is happening at the same time as the US debt ceiling. on a slower news cycle, this would have been on the nytimes front page
mingyeow··on I moved to Singapore
i live in both sf and singapore (50/50), and i am actually very much in support of these rules.

my only grouse is the suppressed political scene, and i am glad that even that is being lifted in a slow but steady manner. and trust me, 90% of my friends have criticized the government in a very public manner on facebook/twitter. last i checked, they are still running around town and still complaining.

do not believe 90% of what you hear about singapore - it is actually a very open and welcoming place, quirky punishments not withstanding.

mingyeow··on Microsoft Unveils Mango, the Latest Version of Windows Phone
Good comment. I am also impressed by this particular path - it indeed seems to be a wholly different way of interacting - if they get their cloud stuff right, i would actually give it a spin
mingyeow··on Anatomy of a $1M Seed Round
This is an amazingly detailed preso with great insights. The only thing is that the conclusions could be more clear cut.
mingyeow··on Did Digg game its own system to benefit publisher partners?
Yes. It is like violating their own freaking TOS
mingyeow··on Did Digg game its own system to benefit publisher partners?
I just feel kinda sad for all the Kevin Rose fans out there. it is almost like being a Lindsay Lohan fan
mingyeow··on Kindle is OK
Agreed, but the order is wrong. The truth is that you will almost certainly buy way more kindle books if you actually have a kindle
mingyeow··on Rate my startup: The easiest way to reply with step-by-step screenshots
Think about allowing powerpoint uploading. turn it into a way for various people to collaborate around specific slides
mingyeow··on Arial versus Helvetica
from my own testing, it seems that people will sometimes say "that does not feel right", and when i switch it over to the other, they go "ah, that is better". just my own experience, which is why i find this so interesting
mingyeow··on Arial versus Helvetica
Loved this article. Amazing how such a subtle difference can cause such a big difference in visual impact
mingyeow··on Great Idea: Empirical User Experience Design Through Action Costs
actually me too. it seems like a reasonable way to compare UI's
mingyeow··on Great Idea: Empirical User Experience Design Through Action Costs
i think these are still pretty complicated. i could understand russel's link in 2 minutes, but I still do not know how to use ACT-R and cogtool.
mingyeow··on Are Young Children Cruel?
and techcrunch gets the most points
mingyeow··on Are Young Children Cruel?
well, all the popular books these day (predictably irrational, spend, etc) all fall under that category of easy to read, not very deep, no?
mingyeow··on Are Young Children Cruel?
i actually like psychology articles, and i have seen quite a few pop up in the front page. so thought this would be relevant.
mingyeow··on When It Comes To Founding Successful Startups, Old Guys Rule
what is the argument about?

older guys have a better chance of starting successful companies because of their experience

younger guys have a better chance of starting fundamentally disruptive companies PRECISELY because they have no experience.

mingyeow··on Are there any startups applying to YC that are a man short?
Hey Ivan! Ming from mrtweet here - we are building on our current app to do some (hopefully) super cool things with the real time data sets. If that is an area that you are interested in, let me know. mingyeow@mrtweet.com

thanks!

Ps: we are a ruby shop, and we have tonnes of server side code to write. ;)

mingyeow··on What happened to Marc Andressen's past blog postings?
i think it always said that, but had the articles present. why would he take down those articles?
mingyeow··on What happened to Marc Andressen's past blog postings?
I loved his articles. tried to find them, but realized all of the archives were completely gone. Anyone knows why, or has an archive?
mingyeow··on Ask HN: Am I crazy?
do it! hit me up when you are in sf - 650 283 6558 / mingyeow@gmail (mrtweet.com/discoverio)

(as long as you do not mind my creaking roof - ear plugs provided!)

mingyeow··on Technology alternatives to book reports
Always felt book reports were the most valuable tools in the teacher's arsenal, but students were always de-motivated by doing book reports, and by extension, demotivated to actually glean the insights from the books. Making it morale-boosting, cool and "show-off" to do book reports should motivate students much more.

One more thing i would recommend for them is animoto! Make a cool music video summarizing the book. ;)

mingyeow··on Synchronized Cycling - Like Synchronized Swimming, But Way More Amazing
The part where they cycled backwards while standing on top of each other was pure amazing. made me rethink what a bicycle is!
mingyeow··on Plan on using an ATM again? This is how your info can be stolen
good point. complexity is sometimes the worst enemy of security
mingyeow··on Plan on using an ATM again? This is how your info can be stolen
explains why BOA attaches all sorts of funny devices on their ATM machines. but i think your neighbourhood/nightclub atms are perfect targets for these criminals. ugh
mingyeow··on HNer working on news start-up looking to rent a room in SF city.
I am looking for a place from next year onwards, maybe can share a studio or something.
mingyeow··on The New Google Search
I think google is still trying to squeeze the last 0.1% of gain in terms of web search. Future value will come in terms of social, recommendations, and user interfaces. not squeezing that last 0.1%
mingyeow··on Boulder has more “collaboration per capita” than any other city
I am based in the valley, and I must say it seems like ot is a far more cutthroat environment here. ;)
