mindentropy··on LG is getting out of the mobile phone business
Google Keyboard is the worst. It is so laggy and there is no way to adjust the keyboard keys for fat finger people.
mindentropy··on India's artisanal fountain pens are making their mark
If you interested use the Pentel Energel pens rather than Reynolds. I hated Reynolds as a child because of how thin the barrel which used to hurt.

Some of the quick drying waterproof gel pens give similar feel of a fountain pen.

mindentropy··on Memory Techniques from Vedic Learning [pdf]
Maybe I am missing something but where is the criticism?
mindentropy··on Open Positions
I tried applying to the position by sending an email. I get the following message:

"We're writing to let you know that the group you tried to contact (jobs) may not exist, or you may not have permission to post messages to the group."

Should I be registering myself somewhere?

mindentropy··on Cooking for Founders
Your advise is very good and I have gone through the exact steps before I could cook decently. I am a hardware enthusiast and working with my hands was a big outlet from my day job as as software engineer.

Being Indian and Doing Indian cooking I learned a lot by going through the basics of Spices and blends. I have a list of recipes from my mother and grandmother and understanding why they were blending the way they were was very helpful.

Also I learnt to meal prep for the weekday on the weekend. Most of the foods is more of preparation (creating batter, dough etc) and the cooking on actual heat is simpler.

mindentropy··on An Open-Source FPGA-Optimized Out-of-Order RISC-V Soft Processor (2019) [pdf]
Generally softcores are used for command and control for the FPGA. For eg you have a framegrabber and you would like to adjust the shutter speed, fps etc you would create a softcore and run normal firmware to setup the registers based on the users choice.

You can think of FPGA as an ASIC and the softcore to control this ASIC. The hot data path and heavy processing is done in the FPGA and processing options for the ASIC can be done using the softcore firmware.

mindentropy··on The Big Little Guide to Message Queues
I am from an embedded background/Operating system background. I would like to know if the ring buffers/circular queues in drivers or stacks suffer same problems as people are discussing here?
mindentropy··on Qt 6.0
> I pay for Qt because cost/value is right.

Aren't this paid for by the customer which might be priced into the product or for your consulting services?

mindentropy··on We chose Java for our high-frequency trading application
Why don't they use fixed size arrays like in embedded systems and not allocate memory dynamically?

mindentropy··on More than half of 18 to 29-year-olds in the US are living with parents
Same situation here. Would love to go back but for job opportunities . Now that other companies are open to wfh I think I have to look out.

As for your DSL I too had the same problem and I found stability after I switched to Netgear from Linksys. Have you looked at that?

I disable all the built in Wi-Fi and just use the modem and use a separate Wi-Fi hw so that I don't tax the modem hw.

mindentropy··on The Oldest Cookbook in Korean
It was a very important part in the Indian culture.

From what I have experienced writing was important yes, but what they usually say is to have a teacher or a Guru. Whenever I read/recite the stotras/mantras the interpretation and the recital of it is so important that I feel a Guru is very important to understand the deeper meaning even though a description of it is present. In the modern world I listen to youtube to get the recitals/rythm right.

This is the same with cooking. My Grandmother had I think just one cookbook all her life. All that she learnt was practical by doing it from a very young age. All measurements and learning was from memory and if there were variations it would be derived from her already base cooking knowledge. Her memory of all these would be refreshed periodically because of the necessity to celebrate festivals with different types of dishes specific to the festival. For this it would not be one person slogging but a group of women get together to make the dish and information exchange would happen.

mindentropy··on Using Vim for C++ Development
How do you deal with i3wm for people who use large fonts? I use large fonts and I find that I do not have enough space in my editor to tile multiple editors.
mindentropy··on Deep learning job postings have collapsed in the past six months
I think what you have done is similar to what is depicted in "The Goal" by Eliyahu M. Goldratt. The graphic novel depicts it in a more succinct manner.
mindentropy··on A guide to learning algorithms through LeetCode
What do you recommend for revision of the different problems again? Won't that take much longer time?

Sometimes due to disconnect for say a week of preparation it takes much longer time to get back into the groove again.

mindentropy··on A guide to learning algorithms through LeetCode
Yes it is. I had to make this decision as to whether I want to work on my personal projects, explore interesting topics or grind leetcode. To actually work on good projects the first step is leetcode.

I have a lot of interesting projects and I can talk a lot about OS kernels and bluetooth. To get to companies working on such interesting projects the gate will be leetcode type judges website. The questions they later ask are rudimentary and none of your effort on going deep into the such interesting topics matter.

mindentropy··on Apple just kicked Fortnite off the App Store
Good that you mentioned Tim Sweeney. He is someone I look upto because his work does a lot of talking. Fantastic programmer.

I really wish the old world game engine programmers unite and support him such as Carmack, Romero etc.

mindentropy··on Toshiba formally and finally exits laptop business
Isn't this a problem with policies rather than cultural? If it was cultural then there wouldn't be such inventions in the first place and legendary bike and car companies.

What I feel is this is because policy created which reduces competition and increases monopoly. It is hard to find companies now which can be started with like Soichiro Honda or like Akio Morita and Masaru Ibuka now. This trend is going on everywhere.

mindentropy··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (August 2020)

What do you recommend for data structure and algo interviews to keep the brain sharp?
mindentropy··on The History, Status, and Future of FPGAs
There is also glue logic between different interfaces that can be satisfied with FPGAs or CPLDs.
mindentropy··on The History, Status, and Future of FPGAs
It is still in dev but I think it is way more usable than the Xilinx tools I guess.

I am curious to know if you are using Qemu by any chance to prototype your hardware. I am doing some work on Qemu to make prototyping easier of a custom hardware and would love the pain points.

mindentropy··on The History, Status, and Future of FPGAs
Curious, what was the reason for going with custom board instead of COTS boards?

Is board to board connection with high speed connectors feasible? This was what I heard from verification folks.

mindentropy··on The History, Status, and Future of FPGAs
Oh I love their humor. There is always something humorous written for their status LEDS.

"Although no specific testing was performed, sophisticated statistical finite element models and back of the envelope calculations are showing the number of status LEDs to be bright enough to execute dermatological procedures normally done with CO2 lasers. Contact the factory for more information about this sophisticated feature and make sure an adult is present during operation. These LEDs are user controllable from the FPGAs so can be used as visual feedback in addition to burning skin."

"As with all of our FPGA-based products boards, the DNVUPF4A is loaded with LEDs. The LEDs are stuffed in several different colors (red, green, blue, orange et al.). There are enough LEDs here to melt cheese. Please don't melt cheese without adult supervision. These LEDs are user controllable from the FPGAs so can be used as visual feedback in addition to the gratifying task of creating gooey messes."

mindentropy··on The History, Status, and Future of FPGAs
Have you looked at open source solutions? Tim Ansell is managing some great projects on open source solutions. Check out Symbiflow, LiteX, Yosys etc.
mindentropy··on The History, Status, and Future of FPGAs
The multiple FPGA on a board is generally from Dini Group right? Fantastic boards.

mindentropy··on Drug cartel ‘narco-antennas’ make life dangerous for Mexico’s repairmen
Isn't what President Duterte is correct, now? There are lot of failings I agree but Philippines would have turned out to be another Mexico if it was left unchecked.

If the borders of the US close then the smuggling will start to go to other countries too I guess.

mindentropy··on Space Jam's 1996 website is still alive
> here was a running joke back in the day on slashdot about "BSD is dying"

Lol. I used to read Slashdot when I was in college and that time the running joke was "Had Netcraft confirmed it?", right?

> Now it's running in AWS so certainly not the same Solaris server.

Hmm. Would they have maintained the site to run on modern software stack or would they have just used legacy emulator like this: https://aws.amazon.com/blogs/apn/re-hosting-sparc-alpha-or-o...

mindentropy··on Analog Devices to acquire Maxim Integrated
> whereas Maxim... friends don't let friends design in Maxim.

I design occasionally as a hobby. My designer friends would tell me the same. What is the reason? I have found their documentation and application notes pretty good and their MAX232 and other convertor ICs are very popular.
