mindblink··on Sea Change – The Pacific's Perilous Turn
Nicely done media-rich layout for an extremely important, if thoroughly depressing subject. Personally, I had a hard time slogging through it, due to the overwhelming nature of it all. We need more great coverage like this. Great job, Seattle Times!
mindblink··on iOS 7
[In a small voice] I like the changes.... [run and hide]
mindblink··on Live map of SF MUNI
When I traveled in Oslo, the excellent bus system had stops with realtime arrival information. Wonder if this can't be bootstrap into a similar system. (And an aside: Why oh why can't we have the same thing in SF?) Some examples below: http://www.flickr.com/photos/54493673@N00/388240155/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/21779731@N07/4876550088/
mindblink··on Facebook computers compromised by zero-day Java exploit
Hi martinced. Interesting points.... Security curiosity has me asking which firewall program are you using?
mindblink··on Great design from Apple on an interaction with Siri
Indeed, just to give some props to Nokia, my (now retired) Nokia N8 running its latest Symbian OS does the same thing for its alarm functionality and tells you the time duration before ringing.
mindblink··on Peter Thiel, Bill Gates, Khosla fund LightSail Energy in $37M Deal
Yup, me too. Great to see a big-idea tech outfit gain traction. Congrats.
mindblink··on The Making of Warcraft, Part 2
One of the the last part about Warcraft's bright color palette is very fascinating. Especially the insight that you have to consider the actual environment that many of your users will be in.

I would argue, the bright color palette served the visual design of the warcraft games very well --all the way up to the mega-blockbuster, World of Warcraft.

mindblink··on Amazon forces Unglue.it to Suspend Crowdfunding for Creative Commons eBooks
@rmc Interesting, I have been doing research on Kindle publication, and most information online suggests that they sell only kindle file format, which is DRMed. Is there a way for publishers to sell and distribute PDFs and ePubs via Amazon?
mindblink··on Live from Microsoft's mystery press conference in Los Angeles
Kudos, Microsoft. Glad to see somebody give Apple a little competition. Been looking for a way to get my Chrome extension and scripts onto a tablet form-factor.
mindblink··on Doom 3 Source code review
This is great. I love reading stuff like this to gain other's insight, and just to give me incentive to look at cool open source code.

Does anybody have additional recommendation of similar reviews of interesting open source code?

mindblink··on Gunshot detection system transforms and raises issues
The technology is impressive. The precision of the information (location, time, pattern) can be transformative in how police responds to high crime areas. Right now, I can imagine that the quality of information degrade in a game of telephone from the caller to the dispatcher to the patroller (and even more so in HCAs). Meanwhile the patroller has to be balancing the issue of investigating a false positive and wading into a danger area.

Panoticon here we come....

mindblink··on Eurovision statistics analysis, and an apology to the people of Malta
Yeah, the Swedish entry was heavily favored, so imagine my surprise when I actually heard that song.
mindblink··on RIM rumored to lay off 2,000 more workers soon
It's always sad to hear such a formerly great company take such a hit. Wonder at what point is RIM an attractive take-over target for the likes of software giants in search of controlling their mobile destiny, like Facebook.
mindblink··on HBO Decides It Still Isn't Difficult Enough To Watch HBO Shows
Exactly, their business model is to drive Cable Channel subscription, which I gather is way more lucrative revenue stream than getting a slice of a bundled internet service like Netflix, or directly selling episodes at the going rate (already comparatively higher price) of iTunes.

Even their DVD sales of Game of Thrones occur until 1 month right before the 2nd tv season begins. All the more to goose interest in the show and channel subscription....

mindblink··on ITA Emerges from Google's Shadow, Unveils New Airline Platform
Partially to spur conversation and partially because I don't remember the details of previous discussions, does ITA still use LISP?
mindblink··on Show HN: Review my Startup: (mobile) Programming w/o Coding for everyday people
Actually, it's not the worse site, but the site could use a little polishing. There's actually a lot of material put out in HN in the past about that. A lot of landing pages look like this example: http://visualwebsiteoptimizer.com/split-testing-blog/landing...
mindblink··on Show HN: Review my Startup: (mobile) Programming w/o Coding for everyday people
A bit, they're buried in the 3rd slider. And they're one of the more vivid showcase your technology.

Oh, also, I don't know if you want to put your videos more prominently on the landing page.

Hey, congrats. Are you guys planning on releasing something for iOS also? (Also, I wonder if there's a way to have a hyperlink in your top comment. To make it easier to navigate to your site).
mindblink··on If Everyone Else is Such an Idiot, How Come You're Not Rich?
Interesting... I would be like to look up the direct quote. Would you have the chapter or section reference?
mindblink··on Cringely’s second column on the firing of Leo Apotheker
Impressive prediction. This was in February, way before the bungled Touchpad and WebOS strategy, followed by announcements that totally diminish the Hardware division, which remains a large portion of HP's value proposition. Cringely has made wild predictions that don't pan out, but this is one that was right on target.
mindblink··on Joel Spolsky Launches Trello - Organize Anything Together
And now all we need is APIs to do syncing to existing To do solutions, like Toodledo, Remember the Milk, Todoist, etc.
mindblink··on Joel Spolsky Launches Trello - Organize Anything Together
Great! This is exactly what I was looking for a long time for our content generation and feature implementation workflow. Idea board => Doing board => Done board. Thanks, Joel!
mindblink··on Port of PG's "On Lisp" to Clojure
That's great! Thanks, Stuart, for doing this. When I was read PG's "On Lisp", I kept wishing the examples were in Clojure.

mindblink··on Happiness, Attention, and Freedom
Hey, fexl. I'm the author of the post. Thanks for the comment. Yeah, your comments reminds me of one of my Humanities Professors' assertions --that Western Philosophy for the past 500 years has been a dialogue and refinement of the definition of freedom.
mindblink··on Reddit Sees Massive Growth & Hires New Programmers
I observed that also. I wonder if it's a flat cyclical fluctuation that popular public social news sites go through, or if it's a sloped cyclical movement (usually downward).
mindblink··on Reddit Sees Massive Growth & Hires New Programmers
Numbers look great. Time on site is an average of 15 and a half minutes, which is pretty impressive user engagement. Looks like Conde Naste is committing some additional investment into Reddit. It will interesting to see how they try to generate revenue.
mindblink··on Why Nobody Can Match the iPad’s Price
Exactly, it's a combination of betting big on market vision and component supplier management, and not as much about vertical integration. Case in point, "Apple secures 60% of global touch panel capacity, causing tight supply". Tight supply constrains iPad competitors price position with component suppliers.

mindblink··on Why American Mothers are Superior
I don't really agree with her response. Her critique that the singular goal of this parenting style is to get kids into a good college. To me, it seems like Chua's approach is to prepare her kids to have the skills (focus/discipline) to be successful in life. The blog's critique seems to be missing the point. The post could argue why Chua doesn't instead prepare her kids for blue collar skills, which would be the bigger issue of why blue collar skills are no longer valued in America any more, the way they are in Europe (but is rapidly changing).
