mimikatz··on UK energy bills are soaring to record highs
Economics is a science. If you try to push one way on the market price you will get problems on the other side, this is the same way you can't get past the laws of thermodynamics) . The cost of reducing people's profits (or cost is what we are talking about) will be shortages because people will still be willing to pay for more electricity at a higher price, they just won't be able to find it because it was sold at a lower price.
mimikatz··on California to ban the sale of new gasoline cars
Basically laws should be followed, they should be serious, they should be real. A law shouldn't be aspirational and people shouldn't go well that is a good goal to set.
mimikatz··on California to ban the sale of new gasoline cars
I'd vote that is a bad way to govern, I am not in Cali so I have no ability to affect this.
mimikatz··on AMD passes Intel in market cap
Yes we do, that's literally what a marketcap is. People who are sure it isn't correct can beat against it and profit in the correction.
mimikatz··on Why Punish?
I agree with the problem, not sure about the solution. We don't have a good small/middle ground crime punishment. I actually don't hate the idea around the Chinese social credit score system (China's use of it is abusive, horrid, and dystopian). giving people points and taking some away for minor crimes that then spill over to privileges or benefits of society seems like a decent idea, one better than hitting them with sticks.
mimikatz··on Popcorn Lung: A Dangerous Risk of Flavored E-Cigarettes (2016)
It doesn't need "encouraging" consuming nicotine to feel good is something humans have done for centuries. People like nicotine, same way they like drinking, like smoking week, or like eating a donut. None of those things are healthy, but humans like it and like the way it makes us feel. It isn't about encouraging it, it is about driving demand to safer pathways.
mimikatz··on I got fired for unionizing at Starbucks and I’d do it again
Housing isn't tied to employment and isn't like health care. Health care not being separated from jobs is a real issue, and I am shocked more businesses don't push to decouple it as well as it doesn't help anyone.
mimikatz··on FDA suspends Juul ban as company appeals
People have consumed Tobacco (I assume in the search of Nicotine) for centuries. There is obviously some human enjoyment and satisfaction in doing so. Transitioning from more harmful smoking to less harmful 'smoking' is good. Letting people choose unhealthy things to enjoy is good (assuming a decent risk calculation). The antivape movement seems so weird amongst the general social themes in the US to open up weed and in more fringe cases decriminalize more drugs.
mimikatz··on Substack is laying off 14% of its staff
Writers who develop a name can leave a lower salary for higher pay directly selling newsletters and articles. NYT makes writers famous. It creates a natural friction once a person has a "brand" and can leave for more money and less overheadaches
mimikatz··on I wanted burritos. Facebook Search sent me to a dead restaurant 45m away
For some businesses Facebook is great, bars that have events, getting a better feel for an apartment complex, a couple other things like that. I won't use it as a maps but to find a place hosting a trivia night it is really useful.
mimikatz··on California Sends Democrats and the Nation a Message on Crime
If an Application team is finding and fixing a lot of vulnerabilities and bugs is that a good thing or a bad thing?

The answer is it depends on the context.

mimikatz··on U.S. takes unprecedented steps to replenish Colorado River's Lake Powell
Or just raise the price of water to a market level and let things work themselves out. people waste and act irrationally when they get something for less than it should cost.
mimikatz··on Top US corporations raising prices on Americans even as profits surge
Yes, I should have been more clear what people will pay compared to substitutions available and competition in the marketplace for that good.
mimikatz··on Top US corporations raising prices on Americans even as profits surge
Pricing is based on what people will pay, not what a thing costs to produce. This has always been true.
mimikatz··on Twitter Employee Revealed Identity of User to WaPo Reporter
The other parts of this are dumb, but Washington Post which is suppose to be respectable, publicly posted "We did not publish or link to any details about her personal life.”

Then corrected to say “We linked to publicly available professional information and ultimately deemed it unnecessary.”

If they can't get the facts about things THEY did right, how can the be trusted to report honestly and accurately.

mimikatz··on Twitter Adopts Limited Duration Shareholder Rights Plan
This seems to be a clear case of management working against shareholders. Twitter stock has gone nowhere since IPO 10 years ago. 10 years of no dividends and no appreciation in value. Elon is offering a decent premium on the current price and its pretty obvious if he walks away it will return to the old price. Who does a poison pill help and protect? Current management who have attached themselves to a company, this doesn't help the people invested in the company or the people with stock ownership. All these comments are outside if it would be good or bad if Elon owned it, that shouldn't be an investors concern.
mimikatz··on America’s Highest Earners and Their Taxes Revealed
I might be on the other side of the article as I came away thinking the tax avoidance of the elite rich isn't nearly as bad as I thought it was. I thought they had loopholes to dodge almost all taxes, but the numbers show most pay more than I expected.
mimikatz··on White House warns of 'extraordinarily elevated' March inflation
I wonder if those Modern Monetary Theory people will start pushing to increase taxes to combat inflation.
mimikatz··on Bitcoin Threw a Party in Miami and I Crashed It
It doesn't at all. As I read it I thought this article was the anthesis of Fear and Loathing (before reading your comment). Fear and Loathing being about fully embracing and being in the event (or the meta of the event). This reporting sounds like an aloof person throwing stones from outside.
mimikatz··on Updated Okta Statement on Lapsus$
Thanks, I get it now.
mimikatz··on BuzzFeed investors have pushed CEO Jonah Peretti to shut down entire newsroom
Here is the funny thing. People want to throw shade at the investors, but Buzzfeed staff themselves frothed when they couldn't sell off their stake in the company. https://www.newyorker.com/news/annals-of-communications/how-...

"As it turned out, for many former employees, it was all too good to be true. This past Monday, as BuzzFeed went public, many of them learned something alarming: they weren’t able to trade the stock that they had waited years to exercise."

When you have skin in the game it aligns interests.

mimikatz··on Updated Okta Statement on Lapsus$
If I use your laptop to get access to your Gmail isn't your Gmail account compromised? I might not have access to your Gmail username and passwords (and MFA), but I can read your email, I can send email as you, etc etc. I feel like I have compromised your gmail account.

If I steal your secure token and log into you through a cloned browser session and access your gmail have I compromised your gmail? It feels like it.

Maybe it is just a distinction without a difference.

mimikatz··on Updated Okta Statement on Lapsus$
I don't understand how they can say "unsuccessful attempt to compromise the account of a customer support engineer" . then can say "Following the completion of the service provider’s investigation, we received a report from the forensics firm this week. The report highlighted that there was a five-day window of time between January 16-21, 2022, where an attacker had access to a support engineer’s laptop. This is consistent with the screenshots that we became aware of yesterday." and the screenshots of the attackers looking at Okta's support portal.
mimikatz··on A Texas Town Buried in Debt Embraced a Crypto Miner It Didn’t Want
Who cares if the data center mines crypto, processes Facebook ads, or makes Pokémon appear on people's phones? As long as the city negotiates and put clauses to cover themselves in the contract then they should go for it. Why try to police what some idiotic company or person wants to do with electricity. Put fair costs and reasonable parameters on it, then get out of the way.
mimikatz··on Ask HN: Am I the only one baffled by the long term usage of Twitter?
Twitter is like Reddit. Very little value in posting, decent value in a harshly curated list of people to watch/listen to.
mimikatz··on Trudeau announces intention to freeze bank accounts of protestors
Protestors should protest legally. They shouldn't block roads. They shouldn't break windows. They shouldn't burn buildings. When they don't they should be broken up/arrested/charged with the crimes they break. This goes for all sides.
mimikatz··on U.S. posts $119B budget surplus in January; first in over 2 years
Inflation is currently much higher than treasury bond rates and they are selling fine. Your claim is obviously false. Inflation was 7% the stated goal inflation rate is 2%. The 5 year t bill is 1.7%.
mimikatz··on When Private Equity Becomes Your Landlord
I can 2nd this. I lived at a Greystar building for a couple years and it was a much better experience than the one I moved to afterwards.
mimikatz··on Google says Android tablets are the future, starts staffing up new division
Fool me once... Google has killed any hardware good will they previously had. My ipad has won me over completely, I am thinking about moving from Android to Apple for my next phone.
mimikatz··on Ask HN: Am I being instructed to do something illegal? (DEI hiring practices)
Not a lawyer take

1. Likely illegal

2. Likely no one will ever care

3. On the off chance they do care, very unlikely you will be in any trouble or hurt by it

4. It is a bigger risk to question it

5. This is wrong and bad, but choosing if you want to fight it is a hard choice.
