mikkom··on Tuna species popular in sashimi and poke bowls in sharp decline
The salmon we are using is mostly from fish farms, not from wild salmon. Wild salmon is wildly expensive here so I don't think it is ever used for sushi.

mikkom··on Tuna species popular in sashimi and poke bowls in sharp decline
Where I live (Finland) salmon is most likely the most commonly used sushi/sashini fish. It tastes absolutely great, IMHO better than tuna.

Hopefully other countries can also start using more commonly available fishes for sushi/sashimi and don't just stick to tuna because of historical reasons.

mikkom··on HN website is/was down. I'm curious why?
Erlang you mean?
mikkom··on World of Goo 2

Wow I didn't know this is possible / legal.

How is this possible? Are google plays "purchases" just rental agreements in disguise?

mikkom··on Is technical analysis just stock market astrology?
Well you have to first define what is "technical analysis" and be quite clear with what you mean..

There are lots of giant trend following and quant funds that will likely fall into "technical analysis" category.

mikkom··on Nokia launches DIY repairable budget Android phone
It's worth noting that even if this phone is called "Nokia" it doesn't have much to do with original Nokia phones. It's a new company that bought the rights to use the Nokia brand name.
mikkom··on A Jim Simons market mystery, solved?
I seriously doubt it's a scam as the flagship medallion fund is only available for insiders (people who actually work at rentec and know how it works).
mikkom··on Twitter's API is down?
It's not like the employees are some gnomes running the system by pulling levers so it is not surprising that rhe system seems to be running ok.

The problem arises at the point when there are bugs or other incidents and there is nobody who can fix them.

mikkom··on Ask HN: Main things to consider when building an app for business/enterprise?
I have been a CTO/founder in few b2b saas services for maybe 15-20 years (one was scandinavian market leader with 100k+ users).

Anyway

Most important thing is simply: find a problem a business is willing to pay for to solve (i.e. it costs them money and time). Set up a simple MVP if that's possible and grow from there.

Do NOT listen to soc/iso talk on this thread, they are an distraction and you will have a lot of time to do them later. Security audits, certificates etc. Might be important LATER when big accounts will ask for them but not at the beginning (unless you are doing fintech etc).

mikkom··on Show HN: I fine-tuned Flan-T5. Can it cook?
Note that this recipe is raw spinach (with raw garlic)

mikkom··on Show HN: I fine-tuned Flan-T5. Can it cook?
It can't. Here is "green pasta"

Only problem is that there is no pasta and I'm quite sure this is not very tasty :-D

mikkom··on I liberate the ending to Minecraft from Microsoft and give it to you
It's very clear that he thinks he deserves more money because the game he write short story for was a success.

20k is a very reasonable sum for this kind of gig.

For me he sounds greedy and yes it sounds like he complains (a lot)

mikkom··on I liberate the ending to Minecraft from Microsoft and give it to you
> The idea that just because there isn't a written contract that he magically retains the rights

There is a written contract. They agreed on the price on email and he then took the money.

mikkom··on I liberate the ending to Minecraft from Microsoft and give it to you
And that's why he paid 20000 euros for it, right?

I don't understand what this guy is complaining about to be honest.

mikkom··on Show HN: Domain Name Search with AI
I created a similar service (migtyname.com and separate personal toolkit) in the past for checking name combinations and checked the domain name availability using custom code that costs nothing.

If this saves you money then I'm happy.

so drumroll..... here you are (whois.py is my project name for the file)

  import socket

  tld = 'whois.verisign-grs.com'

  def whois(domain):
      s = socket.socket(socket.AF_INET, socket.SOCK_STREAM)
      s.connect((tld, 43))
      str = domain+'\n'
      s.send(str.encode())
      buffer = ''

      while True:
          data = s.recv(1024).decode()
          if data:
              buffer += data
          else:
              break
      return buffer

  def available(domain):
      s = socket.socket(socket.AF_INET, socket.SOCK_STREAM)
      s.connect((tld, 43))
      str = domain+'\n'
      s.send(str.encode())
      buffer = ''

      data = s.recv(1024).decode()
      if "No match for" in data:
        return True
      return False
mikkom··on I connected Chat GPT like AI with search engine
Screenshots or examples would be nice as this is totally broken now (most likely due to high traffic from HN)
mikkom··on Show HN: SinglePage – Quickly and anonymously publish a page to the web
It's really an opposite of anonymously as you have to pay for publishing using your credit card.
mikkom··on Who ranks better? Memgraph vs. NetworkX PageRank
Are you working for memgraph perhaps? It certainly seems so based on your posts.

https://news.ycombinator.com/submitted?id=katelatte

Interesting how you got so many upvotes for this content that basically seems a lot like advertisement for memgraphs algorithm.

mikkom··on AI and the Future of Pixel Art
Why? It's much easier to draw a pixel sprite instead of creating a 3d model and then doing tricks to render it as 2d..

And hand-drawn images look better if the artist is skilled.

I think this is something you should watch if you are interested in how russia works. It's very straight talk and clarified russian mindset a lot for me at least.

mikkom··on Show HN: A search engine that lets you refine your queries
Wouldn't this kind of use go against bing terms of use as they probihit using the results for any kind of machine learning training?

> [Do not] Use data received from the Search APIs as part of any machine learning or similar algorithmic activity. Do not use this data to train, evaluate, or improve new or existing services that you or third parties might offer.

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/cognitive-services/bi...

Note: I'm partly asking this because some time ago I was thinking of setting up a little bit similar thing and I decided it would go against bing api terms.

mikkom··on Amazon had sales income of €44bn in Europe in 2020 but paid no corporation tax
> despite collecting record income, the Luxembourg unit made a €1.2bn loss and therefore paid no tax.

If they made a loss they pay no taxes. I'm not supporting tax avoidance but this is totally basic stuff. Most likely amazon grows and invests their profits to open new sites like Sweden and it costs money.

mikkom··on Logica, a novel open-source logic programming language
Yes I read it. Lots of abstract talk about modularity and how SQL is so bad because people tend to use all caps without demonstrating how and what this whole new programming language can do better.

Note that I'm not claiming it can't do but I would be interested for the authors to point out what the actual benefits are.

All I see from their examples that clauses in Logica are much longer than SQL counterparts and that they are importing modules which (I assume) re-define already defined schemas which brings all kinds of different dependency problems that I'm not going to go in here..
