Wasn't familiar the story but after Google + skimming it: Don't use the word stealing, its not accurate. You are providing a service+product that some people find valuable and they are paying you for it.

I honestly don't see the controversy unless there's more that I'm missing.

mikerhoads··on The called shot: I'm retiring in 3 months
Worked for Babe Ruth, didn't work for this year's New York Jets. I'm rooting for you.
mikerhoads··on Show HN: A Facebook app I made that maps your friends' locations.
Yeah, the jumping is definitely jarring.

Are you able to reserve a space outside of the map that is dedicated to displaying friend thumbnails? You could update that section with new thumbnails when the mouse hovers over one of the nav markers. It would prevent the pop up/map position adjustment from being necessary.

mikerhoads··on Show HN: A Facebook app I made that maps your friends' locations.
Cool, thanks for the clarification. I checked it out and its pretty cool, It looks pretty complete as far as my friends list goes and definitely accurate.

The one suggestion I'd make is to see what you can do as far as adding more to the location markers. Ideally, something that IDs my friends without requiring me to click would be best. Maybe incorporating tiny profile images, or names (maybe truncated). I know it could get crowded pretty quickly so it would be something to experiment with for sure.

mikerhoads··on check out my (very silly) web app: tweetmix.me (for Twitter users)
Kind of unclear on how it works. Is it taking 1 sentence from username Tweet A and adding it to a sentence from username Tweet B?

If that's how it works, is it just choosing the sentences randomly from random tweets or does it have some logic that tries to match things in an attempt to make the end result make sense?

mikerhoads··on Show HN: A Facebook app I made that maps your friends' locations.
I'd love to check this out, it sounds kind of cool but I never authorize apps that request " may post status messages, notes, photos, and videos to my Wall" It is just to vague for my tastes.

Can you tell me when exactly the app would be posting things to my wall? Is there a way to opt out of that bit?

Anonymous message boards can be fun sites but I'm not exactly sure this in itself could really be considered a startup. Is there something I'm missing?
mikerhoads··on Show HN: DotSauce Domain Club
I'm sorry, I misread. I thought they were buying them from DotSauce.
mikerhoads··on Show HN: DotSauce Domain Club
I might be kind of a noob but why can't you show them publicly?
mikerhoads··on Obama sets $126M for next-gen supercomputing
Any idea how IP laws work under these contracts? Does IBM have the same patent rights that they would if they had developed the computer on their own?

mikerhoads··on Obama sets $126M for next-gen supercomputing
Maybe the next generation of supercomputers can figure out how to pay off the debt this funding creates.
mikerhoads··on Ask HN: Can a 21 year old college dropout get a non-technical job at startup?
Is it possible? Yes. Is it likely? That depends mostly on how capable he is. If he's not energetic, intelligent and has a great attitude then it is probably not a good idea.

I was able to get an entry level job at a startup as a dropout and have made it pretty far since then. I have zero intention of finishing my degree.

mikerhoads··on Ask HN: What are you building on Google App Engine?
I built http://www.scoratic.com/ Its a daily list of the most valuable dropping domain names.

My biggest problem was ingesting data. The CSV file I needed to process was above 10MB and unable to be divided using range headers in my requests. This file size was too large to be requested by App Engine. I had to write a separate app on a VPS to process the raw file into a smaller and smaller more efficient file and then ingest that file to app engine.

At the end of last year, App Engine lifted this file size restriction and have been able to adapt the code and now it is full automated.

mikerhoads··on Does Watson Prove We’ve Reached The Singularity?
This reeks of "I hear the word singularity one time and I really really want to use it in a headline." TechCrunch should stick to covering Apple rumors/VC beefs and leave the discussion of science/philosophy to someone more qualified.

mikerhoads··on Google buys domain for search terms stolen by bing
The Whois record suggests otherwise:

mikerhoads··on Ask HN: Want to do a cannabis start-up with me?
I think you should mention where you live. Might be able to snag someone nearby's interest if they know your location.
mikerhoads··on Ask HN: Have high traffic med site, what to do?
Its pretty tragic if they removed him from Adsense for that reason. He writes an article that concludes that there is no evidence that Acai leads to weight loss and then Google chooses to serve the snake oil ads and dings him for it.
mikerhoads··on Ask HN: Capitalize Internet brand name or not?
I believe that if you spend more than 5 seconds thinking about something like this then you are starting off on the wrong foot. Flip a coin and then move on to more important stuff.
mikerhoads··on Ask HN: Is it worth paying 36 dollars for Pandora (ad free version)?
I usually run out of hours halfway through the month. if you are running into the limit, I'd suggest subscribing.
mikerhoads··on Colorblind Leading the Blind (critique of the Netflix charts)
I'm not even colorblind and I had trouble distinguishing some of the colors from one another.
mikerhoads··on [dead]
This happened to me recently as well. I did not see in your screenshots a unique verification process they presented me with. They showed me pictures that my friends have been tagged in and then gave me 4 choices of names of people on my friends list to choose from. After about 4 or 5 correct selections it unlocked my account. All of the friends it presented me with were ones that I interacted with through FB on a regular basis.

While this is a cool new approach, it would probably be easy for a close friend (realistically an ex boyfriend or girlfriend) to pass this test.

I love this interface/UX, I used http://www.padmapper.com/ to find the place I just moved into. It is a very similar service.
mikerhoads··on Stolen laptop contains cancer research data
This is actually the plot of Johnny Mnemonic. I can't believe anything about that movie's plot turned out to be realistic.

mikerhoads··on Web Developers: Charging Too Little Hurts the Entire Community
Why does this feel like an open plea to price fix? If outbidding your competition guarantees you work, you should do it.
mikerhoads··on Ask HN: Domain offer - is this real or fake?
I get scam offers through Paypal all the time. If you agree to it, they will email you a fake/spoofed "you've received money" email from Paypal but nothing will actually appear in your paypal account.

I can't actually view that url because my work network filters it as "illegal" but I assume it is bullshit.

If it were me, I'd offer to sell it to him through SEDO or some other trustworthy domain market+escrow service. If he declines, he's scamming you.

mikerhoads··on "301's are the new pamphlets"
