mikemaccana··on 10 people who don't matter (2006)
it sounds as if you didn't read the article. It doesn't say LinuX isn't still relevant - quite the opposite in fact - just that Linus has:

"Although he can claim credit for popularizing one of the most powerful ideas ever to sweep through the software industry, Torvalds's project has matured to such an extent that it's largely outgrown its illustrious creator."

I think it's fairly reasonable to say that Linux will continue on even if Linus disappeared. Same with git, for the matter.

The article was wrong re: Netflix, but the point they made - that Netflix didn't have a capable video over IP product at the time - was reasonable.

mikemaccana··on Zed Shaw: The wonderful Rob Sobers did a great job translating LPTHW to Ruby
It's approved - check the domain (same as LPTHW)
mikemaccana··on Zed Shaw: The wonderful Rob Sobers did a great job translating LPTHW to Ruby
There was an unapproved translation before, IIRC. I guess this is out because the adapter asked Zed's permission first and kept the copyright?

If so, I'm cool with that. Zed can be a firestarter, but this shows he's cool with others contributing something provided they do it the right way.

mikemaccana··on iCloud beta
Indeed. A site asking for my apple.com password that isn't apple.com? No thanks.

You'd think oauth would just be part of implementing logins, and apple wouldn't be encouraging people to give their passwords to other sites.

mikemaccana··on Games company claims their graphics are 100,000x better
> I have seen it already last year and the way how this guys speaks has not changed since then (speaks like a salesmen) ;)

+1. I'd actually trust the company more if they had someone who spoke in measured tones and laid off the hyperbole.

mikemaccana··on The future Firefox UI
More people use multiple apps on one platform than use the same app on multiple platforms. That said,a browser is considered an app platform itself these days.

Also: you disagree with the poster. That doesn't mean he has been proven wrong. Your post comes off as unnecessarily rude.

mikemaccana··on The End of Net Neutrality? British Telecom ordered to block access to NewzBin2
This has nothing to do with net neutrality. Net Neutrality is about ensuring consumers have equal access to providers of content and providers of content have equal access to consumers.

It's not about allowing piracy - quoting wikipedia:

"Chris Elsworth, the main operator of Newzbin, had said repeatedly at trial that he had no knowledge of infringement occurring on the service, and that Newzbin's categories for "CAM," "screener," "telesync," "DVD,"R5 retail","Blu-ray," and "HD DVD" didn't suggest any evidence of infringement."

These guys were ripping people off and got shut down.

Net Neutrality is about making sure YouTube doesn't pay your ISP more to favor them over Vimeo. It's not about some guy stealing movies, and by associating net neutrality with piracy you hurt both net neutrality and people who make stuff (people like us).

mikemaccana··on The End of Net Neutrality? British Telecom ordered to block access to NewzBin2
Hi there. You should probably read the HN guidelines at http://ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html.
mikemaccana··on The End of Net Neutrality? British Telecom ordered to block access to NewzBin2
> The more surprising thing is that they seem to genuinely believe they can "block" content.

They can. Or do you mean that the judges think there's no way around the block? If so, do you have a reference for that?

mikemaccana··on KDE Software Compilation 4.7 Released
Doesn't the 'D' in KDE stand for 'desktop'? Which desktop users know what a 'software compilation' is?
mikemaccana··on MacPorts 2.0 with Lion support now available
And, even worse, xorg and xdmcp to get py25-pil.
mikemaccana··on MacPorts 2.0 with Lion support now available
> Brew doesn't install the whole universe and take hours to install a small utility. MacPorts does.

Confirming that - my new MacPorts 2 install installed perl and ncurses just to get ipython.

mikemaccana··on Firebug lead developer now working on Web dev tools at Google
> That's not even true.

Today I needed to determine if any resources were 404ing on a page. Yesterday I wanted to see the exact POST request my browser was sending. I did both on FF using the inbuilt developer tools. I'm sure they may not replace every piece of Firebug functionality, but I didn't say they did.

> People like you are the major regression to the interwebs. Very seriously.

I've flagged your post. Please read http://ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html

mikemaccana··on Firebug lead developer now working on Web dev tools at Google
Keen in mind that Firefox 8 (and 7, and I think earlier versions) has Web Developer tools built in, obviating much of the need for Firebug.
mikemaccana··on Ask HN: What is the reason that many startups end their company name in "ly"?
- Why not use any other modifier ending, like 'ing' or 'ish' or 'vore' like:

See point #2 - I bet if .ish was a CCTLD they'd do exactly this.

- Libya? Wouldn't Liechtenstein be better? It ends in 'li'.

See point #1. :^) Pardon if it wasn't obvious but both these facts combined for handy 'sniglet' (fake but realistic English word) domain names.

mikemaccana··on Ask HN: What is the reason that many startups end their company name in "ly"?
- 'ly' is used in English as part of many adjectives.

- There's a CCTLD for Libya called 'ly' with domains available.

mikemaccana··on Spotify launches in the US
> Does anyone have a guess as to why they are doing an "invite only" style opening here in the US?

They're not - you can pay for a premium or unlimited subscription right now. I've just purchased one for my brother in NY, so I can share playlists with him from London.

mikemaccana··on Facebook Launches "Facebook For Every Phone" – Java Based Mobile App
What phones have easily installed JavaME apps?

As far I know very few S60 users actually install apps, despite Nokia apparently having an app store.

mikemaccana··on PuTTY 0.61 released
Really? I've seen GSSAPI patched versions of Putty for two years at least, but never an official version with those patches included.
mikemaccana··on Will the Xbox 720 run Windows 8?
Contrary to the other posters, I think this may actually happen: a little research will show that the xbox 360 OS is based on Xbox OS. Some people say this is a fork of Windows 2000, some people say it is from scratch.

If it's true it's based on Win2K, given the current Windows code base is still very portable - we knows x64 and MIPS are maintained already - it makes sense to have a unified code base and update the NextBox.

mikemaccana··on Noah Kagan and the Faceless Bitch slide
> unlike 'bastard'

http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=all+men+are+bastards

mikemaccana··on Noah Kagan and the Faceless Bitch slide
The terms 'nigger' and 'honky' are inherently discriminatory because they are frequently used to describe membership of an entire group of people. They're not looking at individuals based on their own character, but judging them based on their group. These terms are occasionally used for individuals, but less commonly so.

'bitch' and 'bastard' are more commonly used for individuals, though they are occasionally applied to entire genders.

mikemaccana··on Noah Kagan and the Faceless Bitch slide
> it's sexist (makes some women feel uncomfortable in a situation because of their gender).

We have a different definition of sexism. If a person feels uncomfortable, it does not necessarily mean they are being discriminated against.

mikemaccana··on Firefox 8 is 20% faster than Firefox 5, matches Chrome 14
Zero crashes, zero manual restarts, zero lag.
mikemaccana··on Noah Kagan and the Faceless Bitch slide
My standard for sexism is: would it be OK to do it if the situations were reversed?

So imagine a woman on stage, picture of some dude with a blot over his face and 'BASTARD' written on it.

- Sexist? Not sure it would indicate the speaker hates all men per se, just this one.

- But lame, like the speaker couldn't control themselves over their anger at someone and had to bring it on stage for some kind of pathetic vindication? Sure.

I'd advise not doing this not because it's sexist, but because it makes the speaker look like an angry, sad individual.

PS. If the hot sauce was glass, that's obviously even worse. Lesson: stupid drama (like throwing some ex girlfriend on an unrelated talk) invites more stupid drama (like throwing bottles at someone rather than using words as a first resort).

6 is in beta now. Nightlies were 7.0a a few days ago, but if you update.... yep, 8.0a1

PS. Nightly has been incredibly stable on my Mac. I actually use it in production, for no other reason than I was testing it and have no reason to get an old release since it's never crashed and is incredibly fast.

mikemaccana··on Centos 6 released
OK, but unless you have evidence that Red Hat have specifically broken their release policy that won't happen in the middle of a major release, so that's no reason to lag behind on updates.
mikemaccana··on Judge Denies Apple Request To Stop Amazon From Using "App Store"
I'm going to flat disagree that windowing systems and window UI elements are separate fields of endeavor, in the same way that laundry detergent and computer Operating Systems are. I think most lawyers would too.
mikemaccana··on Centos 6 released
Are you saying that RHEL break PHP by upgrading from 5.2 to 5.3?

That would be very strange, RHEL's reknowned for very strict binary compatibility and backporting every security fix to whatever they shipped originally. Lagging behind RHEL updates would normally just mean you're insecure / have bugs for longer.

mikemaccana··on Judge Denies Apple Request To Stop Amazon From Using "App Store"
Ahem, 'target' should be 'rather'. Hooray autocorrect.
