The typical narrative I hear around large healthcare bills is “racked up large charges because insurance will pay it” which is the opposite of what I would expect given the incentives I understand. Do insurance providers have a non-obvious incentive to keep costs high?
In addition to speed, it's an all-in-one tool that does annotations, GIFs, and screen recording (with optional audio and selfie camera) and we optimized those flow for speed, too.
I'm Mike, co-founder at Zapier and head of Zapier Labs. Today our Labs team is launching a public version of Zappy: a fast, free screen capture tool that we built for our remote team. At Zapier, we have 300+ teammates working from across the globe with no central office—we've been fully remote since day one. We've learned that increasing communication bandwidth is crucial when you're working remotely.
I wanted a tool for screenshots/GIFs to supplement apps like Slack, but nothing on the market had the mix of speed and features we were looking for. So, built it internally. Zappy is a cornerstone of how we work at Zapier, nearly everyone at Zapier uses Zappy every week (voluntarily)! And we want to share it.
Why share now? People around the world just experienced a sudden shift to remote work—and we know life sans-office comes with unique challenges. We want to share our experience and make that transition a little easier.
Our goal with Zappy was to provide a screen capture experience that was so fast, people would actually want to use it to communicate. To capture something, you hit a keyboard shortcut, draw a square, and press enter. Zappy copies the image to your clipboard so you can paste it anywhere (or provides a path to your GIF/video).
You can draw annotations, record a selfie view, and stitch shots together. Captures support image, GIF, and MP4 formats. One of my favorite features is being able to grab past captures from the Mac menu bar, instead of digging through folders.
We're working on more features, too, like self-hosted captures on S3, sharing permissions, and a Zapier integration. :-)
Zappy is free to download and use for anyone (you'll need a free Zapier account to log in once). And, for paid Zapier customers, you'll get free capture hosting while it's in early access.
I'd love to hear your feedback and ideas. I hope you find Zappy useful!
All the reporting I’ve seen is missing a key, interesting fact. A judge’s court order from January requires them to do these intentional shut offs.

Are we competitive with Google engineering salaries? Probably not. But most Bay Area startups can't complete with Google on comp anyway.
Are we competitive with other Bay Area startup salaries? Likely. Six-figure engineering salaries, healthcare, retirement package, etc is the norm.
We saw several great teammates move away from the Bay Area and thought there might be others. This experiment is primarily to find people who already want to leave (for good reasons) but feel stuck because they like working for growing tech companies.
If you're only after a $10k bonus, you're right, there are more effective ways to get that.
The majority of Zapier users are not engineers. They can't make that trade-off decision. Their trade-off is instead "should I use Zapier or just not do X at all?"
I'd guess many of Panic board's users chose the latter (not do X at all) given they cited lack of integrations as one reason for shutting down.
It's really interesting/sad to read their second reason for shutting down:
> pro users are more likely to want a larger number of integrations with new services and data sources, something that’s hard to provide with limited revenue, which left the app “close but not quite” for many users
Because this is exactly what Zapier, the company I co-founded a year later, provides for free to other companies/products. Integrate once with us and automatically get integrations with hundreds of other apps (750+ and growing).
I love and use several Panic products (Transmit, Prompt, Firewatch) and hope this end-of-life enables them to spend more time on new ideas.
The only reason I know is because that software auto-tweeted "I am deleting all my tweets using ..." and then got deleted a few seconds later.
The deflection / explosion reaches the sensors at different times, and with precision timing, it enables you to reverse pinpoint where it must have originated: the failing strut.
If I recall, Josh originally worked at Microsoft on the Excel team, and has a deep understanding of how tools can be construed into other use cases like project management and organization.
I bet it feels great to finally get this out the door and am looking forward to trying it.
Now that we officially support Search actions, we can do a lot more cool things.
This is seriously the biggest change to our product since launching the company. We've been working on it for a year (including a beta w/ several thousand users) and are very excited to finally release it. Before, Zapier only supported 1-to-1 integrations which limited it's power. Multi-Step Zaps open up a huge array of new power...
- transforming data (like dates, string manipulation)
- executing JS code in between steps (can do manipulation, extra API calls, etc.)
- looking up data inside other apps
- if an item isn't found when looking it up, create it

I know a ton of folks in the HN community use Zapier. Thank you so much for your support. I can't wait to see what you build now!
Paired with something like https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/smile-always/jgpmh... you can donate to the EFF without even thinking about it.
I'm aware of many single screenshot tools but not something so configurable.
