Patience, humility, Debt.
mikearagua··on Ask HN: Which books have made you introspect?
If you like Stoicism you should try Pierre Hadot's What is Ancient Philosophy and at least the main essay from Philosophy as a Way of Life. He's an excellent writer and you can get other useful perspectives from the other ancient schools. The Epicurean take on pleasure (absence from pain) is helpful as well as the ancient skeptical practice of equipollent dispute.
mikearagua··on Ask HN: What has been your most rewarding job or project and why?
I've set up a very similar situation for myself. Part time work with near full time pay/benefits, remote when necessary. It took some effort to get the employers I wanted to work for to agree to it since it wasn't company policy.
mikearagua··on Hiring Is Broken – My interview experience in the tech industry
So true, this is the advice I give people interviewing for tech companies and a list of the sorts of things they'll want you to know off the top of your head. If that's what you want, that's what you'll need to do.

That being said, though Google has contacted me a few times for an interview, I've never gone through with it mostly because I'm not that interested. I hear from a good friend who worked there that Google is full of "algorithms walking around looking for a problem" and as much as I like programming and problem solving I hate it when its lost sight of serving a human need and I skew strongly toward the experimentalist side (https://www.cs.purdue.edu/homes/dec/essay.criticize.html) of this whole thing we do.

Incidentally, I interviewed a guy yesterday and we whiteboarded a real problem we had encountered last week. He couldn't solve the problem we presented and really didn't even try to dig in much. I was surprised how unwilling he was to dig in so I started asking him about his own environment and tried to get him to describe other problems he's solved and how they might relate. He couldn't really do it even with that being so open ended. At the end of the interview I came away with the impression he was just turning knobs at his other jobs and didn't have much of a chance to think for himself. In this case more enthusiasm would have gone a long way for him because if he could have shown me mastery over the things he did know I would have been willing to teach/train him on the many things he didn't know yet.
mikearagua··on Hiring Is Broken – My interview experience in the tech industry
Funny. I'm like that too, if the interviewer isn't focused on the actual position and what I'd be doing in it and the problem solving and knowledge surrounding the actual work I'd be doing on a day to day basis, I bail because it's a bad sign to me that I'm talking to people who are way too comfortable wasting time.

But luckily I'm usually in the hiring manager's chair these days and my interviews aren't easy but they're not a stupid game.

mikearagua··on Smoking Cannabis Associated with Dopamine Deficits in the Brain
It's almost as if the government had been lying about it for decades and people became suspect of any claims being made.

But you're right, I'm really interested in learning the actual science around it so I'm happy that work is being done. I suppose that perspective doesn't lead to the need to comment.

And it's not only the "sins-of-choice" that cause long term harm. Life itself has quite a few negative effects and is the leading cause of death, after all.

mikearagua··on $115M verdict in Hulk Hogan sex-tape lawsuit could wipe out Gawker
I'll allow it.
mikearagua··on Don't let a single day pass without doing something towards your goal
More really stupid shit at the top of hacker news. Thanks guys.
mikearagua··on FBI Files on Ray Bradbury (1959)
I'm with ya brother but these arguments are way too reminiscent of how Christians console themselves.

mikearagua··on Jim Weirich's final GitHub commit
This is wishful thinking. You could also get hit by a truck (or a scooter), live in the present. My wife recently got cancer she's in great physical condition. And you'll say "on average" blah blah blah and I'll say only the present is guaranteed.
mikearagua··on The Hackers Who Keep the Washington Post Running
I think of a hack as a non-obvious solution to a difficult technical problem. I'm not saying they didn't do a good job, this is just more what I would consider standard.
mikearagua··on The Hackers Who Keep the Washington Post Running
Umm... "hackers"? I know the term has fallen into disrepute but this all seems a bit trivial.
