Is Hacker News becoming Angie's List? What's going on here?
migrantgeek··on #kreyosfraud please help us
Man you got took. It happens. My father once bought a TV on the street in the Bronx and the box just had a couple of bricks. He didn't go around asking strangers to help get his money back.

You gave money to a child for a watch you never saw. You got the watch and didn't like the long wait or the quality of the watch. I don't think that's fraud.

migrantgeek··on Mark Cuban: If Your Company Is Moving For Tax Reasons, I'm Selling Your Stock
It's very immoral to benefit from the utilities, roads, emergency services, etc provided for by tax money and work very hard to not contribute.

Think starting a business is hard? Try starting a business without any infrastructure.

What's worse is that companies like Walmart get cities and towns to build infra to new Walmart locations and funnel lots of the money away from the areas that provide the infra.

migrantgeek··on Show HN: Cronut – A dead man's switch for those pesky cron jobs
I like the idea. I solved the same problem with Jenkins. We already had it setup for CI and CD.

We then added a view and jobs for scheduled tasks. Removing crons from servers is huge.

Now I can see what's failing, what's working and share that easily with a non-technical person via web browser.

migrantgeek··on Ask HN: how to get a tan as a developer?
Stop working for an hour and go for a walk.

Repeat 2-3 times a week and you'll get some color + light exercise.

migrantgeek··on The Death of Twitter
>>> PS: Title feels very "sensational"...

They all seem so sensational. The TLDR version of this post is "I don't like Twitter so much anymore so it's kind of dead to me"

wc has that at 62 chars. Enough for a Tweet :)

migrantgeek··on Better bash in 15 minutes

migrantgeek··on How Do You Make Remote Fingers More Efficient?
Why not setup a local lab that mimics the environment as closely as possible and abstract all work with Fabric, Salt or something similar?

Then you just ship the code you wrote and have then run through the command(s) you've prepared.

Configure an SFTP server on your end so they can drop log data if needed.

migrantgeek··on Tamiflu: Millions wasted on flu drug, claims major report
I'm sure it was initially created for that purpose however as soon as demand tapers off they'll being to seek new customers.
migrantgeek··on PyJVM – JVM in Python
There's a lot of questioning about why someone would do this.

Why can't someone just write for fun? Does everything now have to be "disruptive" and commercially viable?

migrantgeek··on Internet.org: A Facebook connectivity lab project
"Why do we convince our selves that these types of drastic measures are worth the capital we expend to make them happen."

My cynical guess? Wealthy people with liberal guilt. As for the companies, more eyeballs == more money.

I agree with you. It's hard to force this. If the underlying infrastructure is lacking (clean water, food, medicine, clothing, safety) then the internet isn't going to take hold.

If the core infra is already in place, they're likely already working on bringing the net in.

migrantgeek··on Microsoft launches Office for iPad
I'm not sure it's marketing but being in the bubble like was previously mentioned.

Apple has nearly 100% market share with fellow engineers at work.

Sometimes I forget PCs exist until I'm forced to use one (internet cafe, friends home, etc)

migrantgeek··on Wu-Tang Clan will sell only one copy of new album
I think that's the point. If you only expect to make 500K* from album sales, it makes sense to sell a single copy for 500K to a wealthy fan and let the content leak out to other fans.

Same pay, less work and more happy fans.

* - I don't really know what the numbers are. 500K is just an example.

migrantgeek··on Introducing OneNote for Mac
Corporate policy :(

I really wanted to try this out but I'm stuck on 10.8

migrantgeek··on I stopped complaining for a month. A survivor’s tale.
I didn't know this was a thing but I think I'll make April STFUApril for me and give it a try.

I definitely complain too often. I even complain about others who complain.

migrantgeek··on Facebook introduces 15-second video ads that auto-play without sound
Facebook is slowly becoming more like Myspace when it lost the lead.
migrantgeek··on Austin Police Department Warns SXSW Attendees Not To Use Uber
My guess is that they were being asked by bloggers, journalists, etc who were coming in for SXSW and thought it would be easier to put out an online statement to direct people to.

I don't think this is a high priority for APD.

I don't see the big deal really. I've lived in Austin since 2005 and I've never used a cab service here. They seem pretty useless in this city IMO.

I should also mention that I'm not a fan of Uber. I've been with friends and coworkers using it in San Francisco and always I see 3-4 available yellow cabs go by while we wait for our driver.

I'm in San Fran 1 week a month and when I'm by myself, I just take yellow cabs. They seem to work OK for me.

migrantgeek··on Dark spot under cockpit of A-10s
Sometimes an M-Kill is better than destroying the entire thing because you can target support troops when they bring in a wrecker.
migrantgeek··on Python Best Practice Patterns
I do this too. I dislike when functions in languages don't explicitly return something even if that something is nothing.
migrantgeek··on Announcing Two Scoops of Django 1.6
Perhaps it's a form of copy protection but IMO, without it being digital, DRM isn't possible.

I did purchase this book because the last version has so many good reviews and I too would have preferred a digital copy but to me, calling it DRM is technically incorrect and smells like bait. I'm mostly disappointed that I fell for it.

migrantgeek··on Announcing Two Scoops of Django 1.6
It just seems like a personal complaint on your part. You seem to feel cheated. That's fine, I'd feel the same way.

But to say it's DRM when the content isn't even digital smells like bait. It's clearly a form of copy protection but DRM is a different issue.

migrantgeek··on Announcing Two Scoops of Django 1.6
It seems like you're just frustrated that you can't get the new version for free or at a drastically reduced price. That's not related to DRM at all.

You have the rights to re-sell your first edition or trade it freely. You "own" the book. It's not a rental like with most digital content.

migrantgeek··on Lightweight Docker experience on OSX
My lightweight experience is a little different. I didn't want to run a VM on my MacBook Air and I already run VMs locally on my Mac Mini so an alias to the Ubuntu VM on my mini lets me run the Docker client without anything else on my Air.

alias docker='docker -H=tcp://10.0.5.3:5555'

A DynDNS + NAT rule on my router lets me connect when I'm not home.

migrantgeek··on Poll: US residents, how do you do your taxes?
It was H&R Block until tonight.

I started my 2013 filing in H&R but hadn't submitted. I stumbled on this post and saw all the votes for TurboTax and re-entered my info into TurboTax and it saved me 5K.

Even the UI and help sections are nicer in TurboTax than H&R.

migrantgeek··on Ask HN: Consulting work on the weekends -- what should I know to protect myself?
I am doing the same thing right now. I had a lot of trouble billing. I'm just horrible at recording everything.

Now I have something like a retainer. The idea being that I get paid X dollars per month that includes 15 hours of work. If I end up working more than that, I bill $150 per hour. Because this customer is very low maintenance, I've never done anything near 15 hours in a month.

I think I actually get paid slightly less but it's more predictable for both parties.

migrantgeek··on Stephen Colbert urged to cancel speech for RSA
Ah, I think you commented on the wrong thread. Thanks for clarification.
migrantgeek··on Stephen Colbert urged to cancel speech for RSA
Exactly! It is a question for them. So boycotting all speaking engagements especially by those likely to oppose them seems stupid.
migrantgeek··on Stephen Colbert urged to cancel speech for RSA
It's not that easy. Too many companies are dependent on them (stares at the hard token from RSA on my desk) and most people don't care.

We've known that Microsoft has provided back doors for decades and privacy conscious geeks already boycott them but their software is still everywhere.

The NSA scandal in the eyes of the general public is just a joke. "Haha, the NSA knows everything. OK, now what's on TV tonight."

Geeks who care about privacy don't have the numbers to vote with their dollars.

migrantgeek··on Stephen Colbert urged to cancel speech for RSA
What Bush comparison?
migrantgeek··on Stephen Colbert urged to cancel speech for RSA
> RSA is not interested in honest dialog

I'm sure some of their 1300+ employees are interested in honest dialog.

In any case, what's your suggestion for improving the situation?
