I miss startup news.

migpwr··on Google Goggles
It works surprisingly well! It also includes an option to rate the results at the bottom of the search results.
migpwr··on Tell HN: 360 Voltage is out of Beta (10 PRO accounts to giveaway to HN)
The UI looks great! I really like how simple it is to get around and how you're notified when something is going on.

My report was a little slow and it let me know I could come back to it at any time. (it wasn't obvious at first)

I set the account up for my wife's retail site online and the reports look pretty close to what we document now.

I think I'd have trouble explaining how to use the Darwin tool. Maybe have some more information on how to set that up for people who are a little less technical?

migpwr··on Ask HN - What's your best startup idea?
Virtual Bank Account numbers so you don't have to update every bill pay/direct deposit when you change banks. Also allows you to add multiple bank accounts behind it.

Paypal needs this.

migpwr··on Announcing Ubuntu 10.04 LTS: The Lucid Lynx
Enough with the stupid release names
migpwr··on Death by PowerPoint
I agree with you that the best presenters probably don't use handouts or powerpoint but maybe it's because they're gifted speakers. I think it's hard for most people to carry an audience without any supporting material. A few slides won't hurt if you're engaging and have information that adds value to your presentation.
migpwr··on How To Hijack 'Every iPhone In The World'
I'm not trying to be the dumbass comment but this better make its way to a celebrity phone somewhere. SOMETHING of real value has to come of this... obviously, other than a more secure SMS infrastructure.
migpwr··on Ask HN : What would you do if you had to switch to a "manual" job?

migpwr··on Company fined $300,000 for posting fake reviews online
These headlines will typically turn into a cheercamp and I was just pointing that out. I probably worded it poorly but let's not applaud or boo at all.
migpwr··on Company fined $300,000 for posting fake reviews online
It would be impossible to fine each individual the price of a few albums. They have to grab headlines with a huge figure and hope that it scares enough people away. It's a battle for headlines, they're not actually expecting to see that money.
migpwr··on Company fined $300,000 for posting fake reviews online
I think it's pretty obvious why the little guy story is more popular but i think both stories are pretty much the same.

Numbers aside, putting a significant fine on a company that's breaking the law is no different than a fine on an individual. It's meant to make an example out of them to discourage similar behavior in the future... no?

migpwr··on Company fined $300,000 for posting fake reviews online
This is funny. There's going to be a huge applause for this post but whenever there's an article about an individual being prosecuted for piracy... it's the evil RIAA.

Edit: I'm not trying to turn this into a a piracy argument but I do think there's a double standard there.

migpwr··on Couldn't sleep. Wrote some code to displays live feed of latest twitpics.
It's probably pretty difficult to filter but there were some serious NSFW pics coming across my screen there. Just a heads up for anyone else who's still at their office.
migpwr··on Facebook | Username
Were popular names awarded randomly? I went for my name within seconds and it was already taken. It seems like they would just take all requests and randomize for a winner...
migpwr··on How the new smartphones stack up [pic]
Why wasn't blackberry included?
migpwr··on How I Got A Job From A Blog Comment
Thanks for saving me the time. I wish HN's RSS feed would drop you in the comments for the post instead of sending you directly to the link. Newmogul.com does this and I think it's a better way to serve the feed.
migpwr··on College vs Start-up - It's not about the job
I went to a public school that had a programming track like Spencer but we started at BASIC and ended in an "advanced" C++ class.

I jokingly referred to our classes as learning "skills" since we lived so close to the poverty line. We had well taught and well funded tracks in dry cleaning, construction, cosmetology etc. I joke but they provided job placement and it probably gave many people a decent living.

I also remember how great it was have an army recruitment office inside the school.

migpwr··on [dead]
I've never seen them have this many issues before... what's going on over there?

They had the problem with the malicious site tags a few weeks and now this. These are major outages... what's changed?

migpwr··on [dead]
This HN improvement shit is getting out of hand.
migpwr··on A Unix Utility You Should Know About: Pipe Viewer
This sounds useful but I don't like the fact that it's named "pv". I've always associated "pv" with physical volume and lvm... might be a little confusing.
migpwr··on Some things need to change
They could issue a restraining order but he chose not to do that because it would give the guy specifics about the places he regularly visits and where he lives.
migpwr··on How To Be Fucking Awesome
If you practiced basketball for 10,000 hours then you would be fucking awesome, regardless of having a contract.

The right things don't exist... or have we already forgotten the whole "do what you love" concept?

migpwr··on You can't tell people anything
I didn't read the piece but your comment really made me laugh... thanks for that!
migpwr··on The genius of late bloomers - Gladwell
I actually wasn't impressed at all because I don't think we can ever know if she questioned him or gave him a hard time.

It could have been an unbelievably painful number of years for both of them and she could have given up on him years before but was stuck supporting him. It doesn't sound as nice but it is probably closer to reality...

migpwr··on How do I get in shape? Excercise Hack for Entrepreneurs
If you're interested in starting a lifting program I would recommend "Starting Strength" by Mark Rippetoe.

http://www.amazon.com/Starting-Strength-2nd-Mark-Rippetoe/dp...

It includes a good starting program for beginners which is built around the deadlift, squat and bench press.

migpwr··on Ask HN: Review my startup, Snapherd.com
I wish I didn't have to register to vote for a picture... i was about to vote for deep fried candy bars on "absurd"
migpwr··on Google backs gay marriage
A software engineers sexuality should have nothing to do with his/her work. It's like google asking people to vote for obama because they want to attract and keep black engineers. Bullshit, that's right.
migpwr··on Google backs gay marriage
it's probably because of the size of the company and what they're risking by having an opinion on this non-business issue.
migpwr··on YC Startup Justin.tv hits Alexa 160
it's especially helpful if you're a boxing fan like i am ;-)...

I saw a chipin.com widget on there during the last event... to help cover the cost of the broadcast(50$).

Worked out pretty well...

migpwr··on I'm out, baby
Before opening this I thought this came from someone that sold their company...
migpwr··on Myspace's Tom Anderson was an 80s "WarGames" Hacker
What's tough about it is that he was 14 and it was the 80's... way before it was popular to take pot shots at PHP.
