> Don't take my word for it, there is a lot of research on these social dynamics.

Well unless you cite the research, the only option you've given us is to take your word.

Bigger names, politicians, etc. too often seem to be bland, seemingly PR-run affairs. For smaller names and niche topics, there is often some legitimate discussion worth reading.

Of course sometimes the bigger ones are great for another reason, their PR-run effort blows up in their face. The recent Beto AMA was a great dumpster fire of a read.

First manager I've had, great guy and despite his shortcomings I'd work with him again. Straightforward honest guy, did he work well, mentored me well. Then one day he assaulted another coworker in the break room.

Someone's on-the-job performance doesn't mean they are always and forever in the right. Given the lack of any concrete evidence posted but lots of hand-wringing and pearl clutching about vague incidences, I think reserving judgment is the proper course.

> There's a lot of flouncing resignations and "we need to talk" style essays also revealing little of substance.

I feel similarly, I've read all of Monica Cellio's posts and still have no real idea what is going on. Lot's of talk of DMs and messages and emails, but nothing concrete posted, just he said / she said, all while alleging personal innocence and purity.

If there is some concrete evidence and examples, put up or shut up. This is the internet, your word isn't worth much.

It's voluntary, volunteering... there's no need for payment.

I say this as someone who has previously run for (and lost) a moderator role.

mieseratte··on Learn X in Y Minutes
Learning syntax and convention is something.

I’ve been programming for 15+ years, everything from assembly to the latest JS. I don’t need a $50 book for, say, C# that is targeted at everyone and so spends time explaining basic programming concepts. I need a 10,000 foot view and then I can drill down into the things that are unique or otherwise unclear.

mieseratte··on Drone pilots could be experiencing 'sniper's syndrome'
Does anyone have an interesting perspective to discuss, or all we just going to pile on our politicized opinions of the validity of the Afghanistan War?
mieseratte··on Drone pilots could be experiencing 'sniper's syndrome'
Taliban hosted AQ, gave us 9/11. We may be stuck in a quagmire, but there’s more to the Taliban than banning heroin and to pretend otherwise is disingenuous.
mieseratte··on Drone pilots could be experiencing 'sniper's syndrome'
When did the Taliban sign on to Geneva?
mieseratte··on Drone pilots could be experiencing 'sniper's syndrome'
Welcome to war. Bad intel kills good people.

I would be more concerned with the classification of any male over 16 killed in a strike as an automatic combatant than a single given operation gone wrong. This is an unavoidable aspect of war.

mieseratte··on Drone pilots could be experiencing 'sniper's syndrome'
> Any cop would be in death row for pulling something like this in American Soil.

That’s a dubious claim.

mieseratte··on The Whistle-Blower Knows How to Write
Only with Trump could someone find asking an ally to uphold rule of law to be sketchy. He asked to setup a call with the AG, this is somehow nefarious?
mieseratte··on Student rating app penalizes fifth-graders who need bathroom breaks
> Reflecting on her behavior as an adult, it was apparent that I was just a problem for her

Really, that's the issue with school in a nut-shell. Just like I want to walk into work Monday morning and have a routine day, so do teachers and administrators.

This technological issue just appears to be another symptom of a sick system, one that favors ease of life for administrators and teachers, that and hitting test metrics than for a good, quality education for children.

We've seen it before, zero-tolerance. Church it up, "it's about holding everyone to the same standard," avoiding bias, etc. Well, it's bullshit. The reality is everyone teacher and administrator exercises some degree of prosecutorial discretion, completely invalidating any claim of their lack of tolerance, but on that occasion they throw the book at you they just say "Zero-Tolerance" and that's that.

We build and buy systems that favor ease of use, but not good outcomes and there is simply no accountability for good outcome.

mieseratte··on Why Blameless Post-Mortems
> can obviously much more complex than "fixing" an individual's behavior.

My favorite "hate" on the blameless post-mortem's is when it comes down to altering a process that someone owns, because then you're not only fighting for time-budget to fix and issue but you're potentially fighting what is, to them, part of their job and existence.

To get tangential, this is also why I hate big-A Agile, because if you have a person who's job is "do Agile," the scrum (master|lord|bag|dumpster), any changes, deviations, or complaints end up feeling like you're attacking that person's job. Never a fight you want to be in.

mieseratte··on Richard Stallman steps down as as head of the GNU Project, effective immediately
That’s the problem with an unqualified group moniker, anyone can assume it. This is just another No True Scotsman.
mieseratte··on Unexpected cracking found on critical Boeing 737 Next Generation part
Assuming a proper maintenance schedule, we can reasonably reduce that time window.

mieseratte··on A Prison Lifer Comes Home
In what state(s) do governors decide parole? Typical parole boards exist for this purpose.
mieseratte··on A Prison Lifer Comes Home
Highly dependent upon context, I suppose. If you came forward to break an otherwise improbable or cold case, I could imagine that would warrant consideration.

Of course someone could sing to save their skin, and in doing so lie.

It’s a balance of incentives, I suppose? This is why we have a human system of law, not an algorithm.

mieseratte··on A Prison Lifer Comes Home
You’re making an awfully large assumption, that “society failed them” as if that is the reason.

Society has failed me in more ways than I care to count, I don’t go about killing.

mieseratte··on How Not to Build a Country: Canada’s Late Soviet Pessimism

Listen here, nerd! It's a pejorative if you use it as one.

I do wonder if "sent to retraining" selects for a bad audience?

Anyone competent enough to retrain and retool could've done so, obviating their need for your training.

mieseratte··on The curious economics of being ripped off on holiday
I've personally used a debit card (major bank, Visa logo) for Enterprise car rentals in the US. Perhaps this is either a Euro or Non-US problem?

They placed a $1 hold on the card. If memory serves, I've also done this with Hertz but to the tune of a $200 hold.

mieseratte··on Facebook is testing hiding like counts to see if that makes people feel better
> Oh great, so now people have to do just one more step to get the same dopamine rush.

Friction is useful. Sure, this doesn't solve for some hypothetical influencer types or advertisers getting count data. For the hypothetical teenager who is apparently being made mentally unwell by social media, this probably precludes their putting forth the effort.

Then again I think back to all of those "See Who Viewed Your Page" malware ads from back in my day, and wonder if this isn't one viral app away from being useless.

Who the fuck knows? At least it's an attempt. They can go back to the drawing board if this fails.

mieseratte··on Strengthening Congressional Independence from Corporate Lobbyists
Reading the Wikipedia entry on it, the apparent charge to remove it was "unnecessary agency"[0] - that the scope of its responsibility was handled by other agencies, but doesn't elaborate what those other agencies are.

Does anyone know what agencies are being alluded to?

We live in a world where a crime you committed as a teenager is washed away but not something you said.

mieseratte··on I Have No Idea What “Hard Work” Means
> But in practice it often means diligence which is often not correlated to effectiveness in most (not all) fields of knowledge work.

How are you defining "effective" here? Anecdotally, all of the major bugs I've had to unfuck in the past years can be traced back to lack of due diligence. The "works on my machine" / "tested with N = 1" crowd.
