midnitewarrior··on Bitwarden: Free, open-source password manager
They are adding new products like an enterprise Secrets Manager for deployed applications.
midnitewarrior··on Gene-Engineered Mouth Bacteria
> "to produce ethanol instead of cavity-causing lactic acid"

So, brush your teeth and have ethanol in your mouth forever? I'm curious if this would be of high enough concentrations to show up on a breathalyzer, or if it would cause problems for people in recovery from alcohol or drugs.

midnitewarrior··on Ask HN: Now That Phillips Is Enshittified, How Can I Run My Phillips Hue Lights?
Nothing says "I want to improve my privacy and security" like inviting Google into your home.
midnitewarrior··on Instead of collaborating or supporting me, Google stole my idea
It's not "Google", it's people on project teams looking to elevate their careers. There's greed, credit, ego, and notoriety at stake, and sharing it with others is not a priority for many.

"Google" is only going to care if it affects Legal or PR. If you want Google to care, this is going to need a lot more exposure. It will also be really bad for the people at Google responsible for this situation if this gets too much attention.

midnitewarrior··on Sama-Bajau “sea nomads” people gene mutations allow them to free-dive 13 minutes
You know there will be a monthly fee associated with the patented pills you must take to activate the CRISPR genetic modification you'll be receiving.

It will be BMW's heated seats all over again.

midnitewarrior··on Newly discovered comet Nishimura could be visible to naked eye this weekend
The only real solution to climate change is mass genocide of the human race. 8 billion people is not sustainable for the planet. Every human has wants and needs that they prioritize over the health of the planet. We can "green" some of those things up, but it simply delays the inevitable by a few years if we are lucky.

Of course, if some genius gets the population of the Earth to somehow stop wanting the things that emit carbon (transportation, hot water, hot food, modern infrastructure), while maintaining / growing the population, then humanity will have a front-row seat for collapse of society due to resource depletion, rapid species collapse of animals, microplastics-infused water pollution poisoning all that remains.

The only thing, aside from mass genocide, to slow all of that down is for every human to use less. Every CEO has to pledge to sell less each year. Every consumer must pledge to use less every year. The societal controls put in place to enforce this will eventually result in the overthrow of governments that attempt to impose this on their citizens.

We are humans, and what you see happening to the world is simply what humans do. If you want to see less climate change, less resource depletion, less toxic waste, then we need fewer people if we want to make this planet survivable for longer.

It's good to make our activities more green, use renewable resources, recycle, etc., but the reality is that most of those things will only delay the inevitable. Delay is good, pushing the timeline out for the consequences of our actions is something humans are good at.

midnitewarrior··on Newly discovered comet Nishimura could be visible to naked eye this weekend
No, but since there's water on that comet, Nestle will attempt to get the water rights to bottle and sell it under the "Cosmic Springs" brand.

Wow. Time to bring my 130xe out of storage and see if it boots...
midnitewarrior··on 37signals Introduces "Once" - Buy software one time
Prior to SaaS, we had software packages that weren't updated, and often became abandonware because companies could not afford to maintain the software without growing sales demand. It left us in a very insecure world with bugs that wouldn't go away.

Say what you will about recurring SaaS payments, but software is more secure and supported than ever before. SaaS companies don't go away like old box software companies did. When new platforms take over the old ones, they provide migration paths.

Yes, ONCE will give you the source, but what company is prepared to support another company's abandonware? This isn't a bad deal for software libraries, I've used libraries that became abandonware because the companies went under. I really though it would be good for companies to put their source in escrow and you get access to it in the event the company stops supporting you.

midnitewarrior··on ChatGPT user sessions are down 29% since May
There was a lot of novelty use for ChatGPT when it got a lot of exposure. I think it introduced a lot of people to the technology, now the people who actually have a use for it are the ones still using it.
midnitewarrior··on Data centres account for between 1.5% and 2% of global electricity consumption
Also, what about consideration for how much other energy is displayed by automated processes doing things in the cloud? Without the datacenter and the cloud applications, how much carbon would be created through more manual processes?
midnitewarrior··on Spotify looked to ban white noise podcasts to become more profitable
Spotify needs to license https://mynoise.net and include their dozens of soundscapes into the Spotify client.

The captured audio soundscapes are high quality, engineered, mixable audio from many relaxing and peaceful natural and artificial environments.

Tossing a few million dollars towards the MyNoise people for something that's currently donor-ware would be amazing for the creators as well as opening up the ambient soundscapes to millions of people.

Spotify gets royalty-free audio that takes up very little bandwidth.

midnitewarrior··on 80% of bosses say they regret earlier return-to-office plans
Good active noise cancelling headphones mean you can listen to music at quieter volumes than you normally would.
midnitewarrior··on 80% of bosses say they regret earlier return-to-office plans
Cheaper noise cancelling headphones would make me nauseous, however I got the Sony WH-1000XM5 headphones with 8 external mics to sample the surrounding noise and it was a game changer, super high quality, no more nausea.
midnitewarrior··on ASK HN: What’s a small thing you’ve purchased which has made your life better?
I love my XM5s. I mow with them on, I row with them on, I take Zoom calls and phone calls with them on, they work great. I love the pass thru mode to hear ambient noises too.
midnitewarrior··on British Gas starts to turn off Hive smart home devices forever
Put the code / schematics into escrow, and require that the company or its successors must release the contents of the escrow in the event that the service ceases to be commercially viable. If another company wants to take over the assets and operate the service, they can, but they are obligated to release the contents of the escrow in the event they cease to operate the service.
midnitewarrior··on A New Mode of Cancer Treatment
The present threat is no nuclear in nature.

Planes from Belarus flew into Polish airspace, and Lukashenko has threatened that Wagner troops are eager to enter Poland.

midnitewarrior··on A New Mode of Cancer Treatment
The beauty of nuclear weapons being possessed by both sides in a conflict is that it's in neither sides best interest to fire the first nuke.

The West being aligned with Ukraine would prevent Ukraine from getting nuked in an extended conflict.

That being said, there would have been no extended conflict for Ukraine without the West's assistance, they simply wouldn't exist without the international assistance, reducing the chance of Russia using a first strike against Ukraine to 0.

midnitewarrior··on A New Mode of Cancer Treatment
If room temp superconductivity leads to a practical fusion reactor, a good portion of earth destruction for energy development will end. Starting to fix things first involves stopping the destruction of things.
midnitewarrior··on A New Mode of Cancer Treatment
I'm hopeful that superconductors leading to practical fusion reactors can provide the energy to start pulling some carbon out of the air and ocean. I'm thinking this is the only way to reverse the damage on the human timeframe.

I admit it's a longshot, but I think it's the only chance we have. The superconductor news is welcome, we just need to see it get truly confirmed without a doubt.

midnitewarrior··on 200k Compromised OpenAI Credentials Available for Purchase on the Dark Web
Thank you very much! I just spent the last 5 minutes in wtf mode trying to find an option to change my password.
midnitewarrior··on Sinead O’Connor has died

midnitewarrior··on LinkedIn adopts protocol buffers and reduces latency up to 60%
Convert all of my JSON to protobuf to get 60% performance improvement?

I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that.

midnitewarrior··on In the Asian Flu of 1957-58, they rejected lockdowns (2021)
This is from a conservative - right wing propaganda outlet.

That being said, what happened in 1957-58 doesn't really apply here. First, population density wasn't nearly what it was today. It was the land of single-family homes and automobiles, not high-rises, dense air travel and public transit.

Secondly, the lockdowns were necessary to prevent the healthcare system from collapsing. Rate-limiting the illness with lockdowns and other NPIs allowed hospitals to remain functional and adapt to the crisis. In Italy at the onset of the pandemic, the Italian healthcare system dealt with collapse and rationing of care, with physicians choosing which people to treat and who to leave to die.

midnitewarrior··on Illinois prohibits weapons, facial recognition on police drones
It's terrifying that we live in a world where a legislator saw the need to regulate this while I am not disagreeing with the need for this once brought to my attention.
midnitewarrior··on Illinois prohibits weapons, facial recognition on police drones
This is terrifying that we need this kind of regulation.
midnitewarrior··on Tell HN: Messages from Another Azure Customer Are Appearing in My Queue
What if the credentials got checked into GitHub, and GitHub Copilot is auto completing those credentials in random coding sessions? Woof
midnitewarrior··on Ask HN: Are there alternatives to the subreddits which will go dark next week?
My alternative is taking a break from Reddit for awhile in support of the protest and to remember what life was like before it took all my attention.
