mickhagen··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (March 2015)
Spatch - London, UK - Full Time (CAN OFFER VISA / RELOCATION SPONSORSHIP) - DevOps, Front-end, and Back-end

We’re creating a new form of communication. Email is over 40 years old and doesn’t support many modern use-cases. Most messaging alternatives aren’t decentralized or federated. We think there’s an opportunity to create a modern, federated messaging platform with mutable, collaborative objects being at the heart of it (i.e. tasks, events, etc -- but the objects could be anything). What would happen if you took the best components of email (IMAP/SMTP), chat (IRC/XMPP) and collaboration (Wave)... and created a federated platform and new set of open protocols around it? That’s what we’re building. Spatch is backed by some of the top US and European venture capital investors. Spatch is an equal opportunity employer.

We'd love to get to know you fellow HN'ers. Just wrote this post last week: https://medium.com/@mickhagen/the-spatch-hiring-guide-7a40b4... -- Does it resonate with you? Email us: jobs@spatch.co

mickhagen··on Show HN: Switchboard – open-source email processing in Erlang
Lamson is an SMTP server which acts as the gateway for emails from the outside world to be put in your mail store.

Switchboard doesn't have any direct connection to SMTP. It monitors changes in your mail store using IMAP IDLE and issues events to workers which can then do basically whatever your heart desires.

(btw, we host our switchboard mailing lists on librelist.com which is a showcase for Lamson. cool project)

I'm guessing that you want the emails to be encrypted before being saved to any disk? In that case, Switchboard isn't sufficient: it runs in front of email providers, and can't prevent them from saving an email to disk.

Switchboard could be used to fetch the email, encrypt it, and then replace the unencrypted email with the encrypted email on the server. However, replacing emails is invasive if the user doesn’t expect it, and other than the email provider's word you have no guarantee that the unencrypted email was actually deleted.

Great, I hope it's a good fit!

If not, please let us know about any sticking points either through the mailing list, switchboarddev _at_ librelist.com, or the GitHub issues page.

mickhagen··on I'd like to use the web my way, thank you very much Quora
I think we both agree on why Quora does this (viral spread mechanism, juicing numbers, etc). That's besides the point.

When we are guests in someone else's home, seems only fair that we honor their requests. Asking you to simply create an account shouldn't be such a massive chore.

I believe this attitude is dangerous for our community. I fear for what happens when we ask you to pay.

mickhagen··on I'd like to use the web my way, thank you very much Quora
Lol true.

I have no problem with people voicing an opinion -- it's America. But what I think people are complaining about in this case is just ridiculous.
mickhagen··on I'd like to use the web my way, thank you very much Quora
Here comes the mob. Really? Are we all gonna throw up our arms because of this? We use their service, we consume, read and digest their content like blood-suckers and now we get mad they're asking us to sign up? PG you've been reading Quora for "several years" and you think it's unjust they are asking you to sign up?

Quora has let us eat at their house for years and now all they're asking is we take off our shoes before entering. Let's not forget, we're in their house!

As an entrepreneur, how will we ever convince users to actually pay for products when the mob and pitch forks come out when they ask us to sign up?

We are so entitled it's sad. Really hope Quora doesn't bow down here. They aren't asking for your first-born. If you wanna be a member of their community, then be a member. Nothing unfair about that.

mickhagen··on They rap for funding (startup hustle)
Good point. I'm the Founder/CEO. This was more about exposure/hiring than it was about funding. However, we're definitely looking for great investors. Not about money, about people and what they can bring.

Thanks. I appreciate that.
