michelledepeil··on Twitter's heir apparent isn't X or Threads – it's Bluesky
I've seen reports of the fediverse getting a bump in users. End of the day you will almost never see news about it because it has no marketing budget, and offers no investment opportunity. Money talks.

It remains imo the best social platform because of those reasons.

michelledepeil··on SimpleQA
Why is that suprising?

There is no logical reasoning happening, it has no concept of right and wrong, let alone that it can force a specific percentage of wrongness.

michelledepeil··on Ask HN: Can a 5 year old i7 laptop compete with one made today?
the t480 has two batteries! one internal and one removable. The laptop using the `tlp` package and a WM like i3wm - which I prefer for functional reasons - discharges at around 5 watts when idle, and running heavy stuff brings it up to 17W max.
michelledepeil··on Ask HN: Can a 5 year old i7 laptop compete with one made today?
Highly recommend this: you can hit 50% to 70% discount from original price, plus contribute to reducing e-waste.

I've been using a third-hand T480 for many (5? 7? Can't even remember anymore) years now, and it's probably the best Linux experience anyone can hope for. Performance vs. efficiency is crazy - easily hitting 20 hours, screen-on battery life after all this time and many full discharges.

michelledepeil··on The Monospace Web
If nothing else, the tree ul-list css class is good enough that it should be part of the HTML spec (as in: a <tree> tag) imo. What an incredibly useful thing that is.
michelledepeil··on A better merge workflow with Jujutsu
TIL about worktrees, a feature I've needed in the past but didn't expect to even exist.
michelledepeil··on Serious Sam handled massive amounts of enemies on 56k modem connections
Impressive writeup. The deterministic aspect is not super popular anymore, I guess, but this entire post does make me wonder how the networking layer compares to a slightly more modern multiplayer game.
michelledepeil··on Telegram has launched a pretty intense campaign to malign Signal as insecure

michelledepeil··on Sleep apnea: Mouthguards less invasive, just as effective as CPAP
That is entirely dependent on the type of steroidal nosespray. There are types that don't cause dependence or stuffy nose when not used.
michelledepeil··on Does anybody remember Google People
I disagree, because I believe it's quite difficult to write in that uncanny valley of particularly creepy texts, without showing any matching creepy imagery.
michelledepeil··on Farewell EC2-Classic, it’s been swell
Yes, but the reality is that EC2 is optimized for a target audience who wants to customize the deployment beyond a linux box with a public IP.

But iirc following the "Launch Instance" wizard and choosing defaults for everything, as well as a (default) public subnet gives the exact thing you're asking for.

michelledepeil··on Librem 5 USA Smartphone Provides Many Exclusive Security Features
You're probably right, and battery life varies a bit day-to-day. I haven't done a formal test to double check my statements above, more just a feeling.

I've had the phone for a while and the battery has gone through many cycles. It has definitely lost some capacity.

michelledepeil··on Librem 5 USA Smartphone Provides Many Exclusive Security Features
OMG I got this update and modem resume has been flawless since!!!

Thanks for your hard work to get this fixed!

michelledepeil··on Librem 5 USA Smartphone Provides Many Exclusive Security Features
Not great. With suspend enabled and if I don't use it much, about 8 hours to 0%. If I leave it on (i.e. disable suspend), about 3 hours.

I'm honestly almost always near a charger, which I also realize is just a cope.

michelledepeil··on Librem 5 USA Smartphone Provides Many Exclusive Security Features
yes, daily driving for 2 years now.

* it's good. works well, apps reflow nicely, can run a lot of stuff simultaneously without memory issues. There is a nasty kernel bug relating to suspend and the wwan modem, but that's not pureos specific.

* depending on the app, ranging from snappy to so-so. Especially flatpaks tend to stutter...

* I don't use those services but it should be possible via gnome-accounts. I do sync a caldav and carddav and that works flawlessly.

michelledepeil··on I'm never investing in Google's smart home ecosystem again
This is, imo, not a google-problem, but a non-FLOSS problem.
michelledepeil··on I wish GPT4 had never happened
When you don't have enough background knowledge to even verify whether the answer is plausible. Or when you don't know what question to ask.

It may very well be that newer AIs and models even manage to get that right more often, though. Or that a canny prompter will start by asking which question to subsequently ask.

As a side note, you're not a novice if you know the general field of file systems pretty well, IMHO.

michelledepeil··on Dutch journalist who writes critically on China targeted in intimidation scheme
I was referencing (very implictely) the current seated PM saying that The Netherlands "doesn't have to be the best kid in class", with the EU being the class, and then proceeding by aiming for being the worst.
michelledepeil··on We're building a browser when it's supposed to be impossible
He calls that "Focus on vertical slices".
michelledepeil··on Dutch journalist who writes critically on China targeted in intimidation scheme
Absolutely not gonna happen: the current Dutch govt. ideologically refuses to be the best (often even "good") at anything.
michelledepeil··on I wish GPT4 had never happened
I spent some time thinking about this when the GPTs started becoming useful, and I'm glad to see my semi-prediction come true (related toot: https://fosstodon.org/@samuelnorbury/109799880269029379). Specifically: LLMs are great when you know what to ask for, and sort of know what the answer should be - call it a boilerplate machine - but bad if you're a novice, in which case meta-analysis of a query is needed to give a useful answer to a question.
michelledepeil··on The day Windows died
Ha! I've actually been facing this same problem on a t440s.

thanks for posting the fix!

michelledepeil··on The Lapdock Kit
It's pretty niche, but as a Linux phone user I can see the appeal: with a device like this I can totally get rid of a standalone laptop.

For situations where you can easily connect 3 peripherals to create a desktop experience, indeed, this is inferior. But it's exactly the in-between situations - sitting on the couch but want to be slightly more productive than using an on-screen keyboard - that I think something like this would shine. But again, admittedly, niche.

Right now I use a separate, old Linux laptop and SSH to my Linux phone to emulate the above, but that feels wrong somehow, and requires me to keep multiple devices in sync, connected to WiFi or Tailscale, etc.

michelledepeil··on Helix: Post-Modern Text Editor
I gave this a couple of tries but my vim muscle memory is actively hurting me the longer I try... I would love if this had a - at least somewhat closer to - vim-mode, because all the rest, LSP, startup speed, etc, is excellent.
michelledepeil··on Ask HN: How did you stop drinking?
I was (am?) an alcoholic though I was probably on the lighter side of the spectrum, similar in amounts to what you describe. It took me a long time to recognize I had a problem, even with many binge drinking events turning into soured weekends and broken promises.

My hack for stopping (after yet another bender) was turning it into an identity for myself: I am now a person who doesn't drink alcohol. I think creating identities for yourself in this way is effective for many habits.

I wrote about why I chose to quit in 2020: https://whatshouldyoueat.com/2020/03/15/quit-alcohol/

and how it felt after a year of no drinking in 2021: https://whatshouldyoueat.com/2021/02/28/a-year-sans-alcohol/

good luck

michelledepeil··on Covid: Summary of lab-origin hypothesis
A lot of the tweet mirrors what is described in more detail, and better sources, by Alina Chan in Viral, Search for the Origin of Covid-19. In my opinion a book worth reading, as it doesn't try too hard to point a finger but raises enough circumstantial arguments to support _anything other than a natural origin_ for Covid-19. Either way, CCP has caused enough damage (in my opinion, again) to never be trustworthy again.

Somewhere else in this thread, her medium is linked, and indeed she also writes clear and rational reviews of more recent literature.

michelledepeil··on Programming breakthroughs we need
I think you misinterpreted that. Their gripe wasn't with a textual representation of code, but the fact that we interact with it as text, not in any form. And that fundamentally limits the power of the tools we use to interact with it, according to the OP.

Of course everything can have a textual representation eventually.

Your final question, "what will you have instead?", really nails the point of the article, as that's basically what the author is asking (to be invented).

michelledepeil··on Tailscale ate my network (and I love it)
Yes, you're right that "it can't even stand near in terms of scope", but the original comment did not argue that, the original comment gave an opinion about the usability (actually "to setup/manage", so more like the administrative efforts) of Tailscale, which is not the same thing as the scope of its abilities. Calling the comment misleading because the service has a smaller scope is then at best misunderstanding the original comment, at worst purposefully trying to derail the discussion.
michelledepeil··on Ask HN: Best open laptop for a young learner?
My suggestion would be a refurbished Thinkpad X230 and install a nice stable Linux distro (Linux Mint with XFCE for instance). It's open and repairable enough to scratch that itch, and the specific flavour of Linux gives stability but also configurability and exploration options. Get a low-spec laptop and start by replacing the HDD with an SSD and adding more RAM, then creating a bootable USB and installing the OS.

IMO the RPi is quite fragile , and the PBP seems a bit fragile and _very_ unstable to me, though they are both certainly far more open/free.

michelledepeil··on Ask HN: What's the Deal with Tailscale?
You're right that the parent used "disgusting", and there too it was inflammatory.

With regards to the pricing, your comment said "pay a subscription fee", which implies all tiers of Tailscale are paid, which they aren't, similar to AWS free tier services.
