michaelxia··on Lumina Desk – digital desk for health and productivity
yep you're right the display is not touch by design. Else it would be too sensitive to various ways people use their desk.

we want users to build their own "daily dashboards" using desk widgets

stuff you normally keep open, or glance at (chat msgs, calendar events, weather, email) but don't actively stare at (medium, code)

good point vivegi! yes display is spill proof.

Apple's 60W chargers fit, and so do USB docks from Dell / Caldigit / etc. We even have a Legion gaming computer, and that thing's charger is literally wider and longer than a brick.

tools enable people to do more things. those things can increase or decrease productivity. at the end of the day, it's largely defined by individual settings.

examples: * if you in ops or management, and are in comm mode daily, need calls / messages with your team, this keeps you hooked up to everything going on. * if you are in engineering or research, and want to go into deep focus, you can use the widgets for things like code, logs, a lofi playlist, etc. * if you're a degen trader, you can also load up 5 twitter widgets and a stonk chart.

sure if the engineer used a degen trader dashboard, it would be counter productive. Google can't stop me from opening reddit / youtube on my browser, I don't blame them for making me less productive.

my desk has monitor, mic, keyboard, mouse, phone, airpods, a usb dock, a webcam. i think i count 9 separate cables for power and signal.

its a mess, even my Qi wireless charger HAS A CABLE.

honestly this might save my marriage.

actually if you read the comments, the internet in general wasn't super supportive.

kinda crazy, how different audiences get very different reactions.

michaelxia··on Graph Processing on FPGAs: Taxonomy, Survey, Challenges
> what advantage does a FPGA give

basically time and power. FPGAs will most likely be both faster and more power efficient than GPUs and CPUs, the memory point isn't quite relevant, you can have an FPGA board that talks to 32 GB of ram, or an HBM chip with as much memory density and memory bandwidth as a 1080 TI GPU.

michaelxia··on Graph Processing on FPGAs: Taxonomy, Survey, Challenges
If you take apart a gpu and look at the die you can see they basically frankenstein 1 or 2 HBMs with the GPU die. Xilinx is doing this too in their latest line of VU33 - VU38P HBM chips too (4-8GB on chip, 460 GB/s).

Any density upgrades for the GPU will also reflect for FPGAs, but we're physically limited in terms of how many HBM dies you can slap on :(

michaelxia··on Live Coding in VR with Oculus Rift, Firefox WebVR, JavaScript, Three.js [video]
Lol bro I think you missed the point he's making with flying. It's an analogy.

once you're familiar with your dev environment, you don't need to have it floating around in VR space. Its all memorized pretty much, instant access, L1 cache. so to look at something in VR you turn your head and the view pans. To look at it in your brain, its just there, instant lookup.

one requires a transition in space to access information (flying) the other does not (teleportation)

michaelxia··on Apple Developer Website Update
Then let me clarify...

1) The site was down since Thursday, not yesterday. 2) You can't "overhaul" and expect to deploy "soon", so wtf are you doing apple? 3) "Soon" is not a timeline, at least not in the real world. 4) What info got owned? What could be effected?

michaelxia··on Amazon plans major move into grocery business
thats an interesting point. I'm not sure its all part of some large plan slowly in motion, more likely just monetizing parts of their infrastructure they already had.

what if my kids ask me what "stores" are.
