micampe··on Smarter Link Underlines For Every Website
You keep repeating that comment but no, they are not. The idea is clever and the result is pretty good, but what the parent is saying – that in your implementation the line looks more broken up because it's more separated from the glyphs – is true.

You may be able to fix that by tweaking the shadows but as it is currently implemented it works pretty well for larger display text but not so much for smaller body text.

micampe··on Apple finally makes it easy to disable iMessage
That seems to be the case indeed. It's off for me as well after a settings reset.
micampe··on Apple finally makes it easy to disable iMessage
When iMessage fails you get a notification and next to the message appears a button which pops up a menu with “Try Again” and “Send as SMS”.

http://tidbits.com/resources/2013-10/iMessage-failure.png

(Unfortunately that didn't work for the issue fixed by this tool, since the iMessage never actually failed from the sender's perspective)

micampe··on Apple finally makes it easy to disable iMessage
> the default iPhone settings has "Send as SMS" off

I don't think this is true. I have a phone here I only use for development where I don't think I changed that setting and it's on.

micampe··on Show HN: I updated the Smackbook script for OS X Yosemite
Very cool, I wrote the ThinkPad version at the time. I had forgotten about it, there is a link to my post at the time in that page and I’m happy archive.org exists http://web.archive.org/web/20070922232656/http://blog.micamp...

I was definitely not in high school at the time.

micampe··on Leica M Camera Timeline
While I agree that Leica went off their rails, I don't think that's a good example, the Sultan of Brunei had a gold plated Mercedes made for him, I think a few cameras are easier to obtain :)

> There are many rich and famous people in the world, but not everyone knows the art to splurge it. http://www.nairaland.com/1896187/meet-man-7000-luxurious-car...

He also own 7000 of the most expensive cars and three full size airliners as private jets. (Posting this just because I found it hilarious. I knew about the gold plated car and I found this list when looking for a source)

micampe··on Low Light and High Dynamic Range photography in the Google Camera App
Check any photo from any of the great 35mm photographers of the past century and let me know how much detail you see and how much that detracts from the photo's value (not talking about monetary value of course).
micampe··on Leica M Camera Timeline
The GF1 was good but it was a very early generation m43, any recent one from Panasonic or Olympus gives much better performance overall and will easily outperform your D70 (I moved from GF1 to E-M10 a few months ago).

The post is tagged "satire".
micampe··on The web, it's for everyone
What a thoughtful and insightful remark. If you don't believe that statement to be in the right ballpark you are out of touch with the world outside HN.
micampe··on The web, it's for everyone
We are talking about people disabling JavaScript in their browser. One in several thousands is still a large over estimation.
micampe··on The web, it's for everyone
That is not what I meant. I meant: “that code path only executes one time out of fifty (thousand), but you have to test it exactly like the core code that runs thousands of times more, so maybe you can drop the feauture since it's used by a handful of users”.

(I have my doubts one in fifty people disable Javascript)

micampe··on The web, it's for everyone
In my experience, when discussing development problems, there are two types of people: those that say “well, you could just […]” and those that tried to do it and learned from experience how many unexpected problems you are going to have, how much work it's going to be, how much more testing you need, etc.
micampe··on The web, it's for everyone
Yes, that's the ideal. Try and do it. Remember to test all the different progressively enhanced paths that only a tiny minority of your users is using.
micampe··on The web, it's for everyone
Why did you need to create a throwaway account for this comment?
micampe··on The web, it's for everyone
Not everyone has the resources that Twitter and Facebook have to mantain what essentially are two version of their website.

My position is that if you disable Javascript you get what you get (both you and I will be happy to know that I don't do web development anymore).

micampe··on Y U NO commit??
No, but this explains a nice trick to use it without remembering the commit message http://technosorcery.net/blog/2012/08/05/updated-git-rebase-...

With that you can do:

    git fixup HEAD~2
micampe··on Please don't make us use iCloud anymore
I can't think of any iCloud data you can't download from the website or that is not already on your machine anyway.
micampe··on Y U NO commit??
You can do that with autosquash https://coderwall.com/p/hh-4ea
micampe··on Corpus of network communications automatically sent to Apple by Yosemite
I see the opposite, but I always try to remind myself that it's just my (and your) bias showing and not comment on it, because I would almost certainly be wrong.

For example, the highly inflammatory title for yesterday's submission (no privacy by design) stayed unmoderated for the entire day, until it went off the front page.

This issue has had multiple submissions in the past two days and they received plenty of votes, it doesn't seem "HN" is giving it preferential treatment.

micampe··on What we give away when we log on to a public Wi-Fi network
It's not difficult. I use Cloak https://www.getcloak.com you install the app and you are done.

People are just not aware of these problems, and when you tell them they often downplay them, because they seem far away and until something goes wrong they think it can't happen to them. Also, it's not easy to convince people to pay for prevention rather than to fix an existing issue.

micampe··on Disable sharing of Spotlight searches with Apple
Pretty much all of them https://pythonhosted.org/pyobjc/
micampe··on Disable sharing of Spotlight searches with Apple
Yes. One single annotated screenshot would have been simpler, more explicit in what it does, it wouldn't have trained users to execute random code from the internet, and at the same time taught them how to revert the changes.
micampe··on Firechat and nearby communication
Shortwave https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/shortwave-short-range-anonym...
micampe··on Why can't Apple decrypt your iPhone?
Contact names are not displayed in the lock screen until the first unlock (new in iOS 8).

Notice how now all devices, not only ones with Touch ID, say that your phone needs to be unlocked for full functionality after a reboot.

micampe··on Windows 10: Code that uses 'os.StartsWith(“Windows 9”)'
I'm sure the API provides the information, that doesn't stop developers from doing crazy things. The rumor, whether true or false, is actually just more evidence of how Microsoft is devoted to binary compatibility. It's a funny bit, yes, but doesn't say anything bad about MS at all.
micampe··on Lyft Drivers Are Burning Their Pink Mustaches
I don't see everyone hiding their faces, just two people, and “the pyro drivers noted that these mustaches were probably putting a ton of noxious chemicals into the air” may have something to do with covering mouth and nose.
micampe··on Atom: Editor window startup is slow
I don't use Atom so I can't compare directly, but from those comments even Xcode sounds faster.
micampe··on The Definitive Guide to Syntax Highlighting
This made me think that it would be useful to have different, easily switchable highlighting modes: syntax and symbols when I'm writing, structure when I'm reading code.

Or maybe syntax highlighting for the scope I'm in and structure for the rest.

I often use the folding/nesting indicators when reading code, it would be an extension of that.

micampe··on SlackTextViewController: A new growing text input for iOS
You should add your view to the cell's contentView instead of directly on the cell, which allows you to keep the default behaviors and also reuse the view.
